INHERITS $100,000 MYSTERIOUSLY DEAD NEW YORK, Aug. 28—Police today began a thorough investigation into the mysterious death of John Sutphen, member of a prominent South New Jersey family. Sutphen inherited a fortune a wess ago, said to be more than $100,000. An autopsy showed that cyanide of potassium caused the death. Sutphen was found dead on a couch in the drawing room. He had reached his apartment about an hour and a half before his body was found. The body was fully dressed except for the coat, and it was clutched in the right hand. Authorities today learned that Sutphen had returned to his apartment in a taxicab or a private car and that he was assisted to his apartment by an elevator attendant. Mr. and Mrs. Gale and family visited their son who is ill in a Los Angeles hospital Sunday. Mrs. Tiland and family have just returned from a week's vacation with friends in Long Beach. Mr. and Mrs. Schryer and daughter Olive were town visitors Saturday night. Mr. Keith Ford and Miss Will Ryan attended the Graman's Metropolitan Theatre at Los Angeles Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. Jones visited Mrs. San Bernardino. Mr. and Mrs. Gale and family visited their son who is Bl in a Los Angeles hospital Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Williams visited their daughter and family of Long Beach Friday night. Mr. and Mrs. Lyle and family were town visitors Saturday also Mr. and Mrs. Buz Collins and family. Mr. and Mrs. Cokeley and daughter Lola were Long Beach visitors Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Williams and Mr. and Mrs. Cornine and family were Gainesha park visitors Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Greminger attended the California Theatre Sunday night. Mr. and Mrs. Cokeley and family visited Anaheim Saturday night. Mr. and Mrs. Bert Ryan are entertaining Mrs. Ryan's brother James Cole and family from the north. They also entertained their daughter, Mrs. Marais Johnson and son Donald of Fullerton and also their son Bob Ryan and wife. Miss Willie Ryan visited Mrs. Conway Campbell of Huntington Beach Saturday. BREA NEWS BREA, Aug. 26 (Spl.)—Mendames Gill, Harvey and Reid chaperoned the C.E.Junior to Balboa Friday where they enjoyed bathing etc. Miss Ada Geyer from Anaheim was a visitor at the home of Monroe Chambers and family Friday evening. Mrs. Brown on West Cedar street was called to her mother's bedside in Oklahoma where she will remain until the latter is out of danger. Mr. Elmer Weaver is still improving slowly since returning to home from the hospital at Fullerton. Mrs. E.L.Olmstead and sons Edward and Gerald left Friday for Balboa and will return home Sunday night. Taylor were Tustin visitors Friday night at the home of the latters uncle, Mr. Pollard. Mr. Pollard's health is very poorly and he is not expected to live. Mr. Clyde Badgley and others were visitors in Huntington Beach Friday. SHIEK ON TRIAL LOS ANGELES, Aug. 28.—Mark Davis, the alleged college shiek who is charged with obtaining $2700 from his flancese with which to complete his education and then married another girl was to be given a preliminary examination today. Mary Probst, the Long Beach girl who claims she turned over her earnings as a school teacher to Davis to enable him to finish his course at the university of California, was to be the main witness for the persecution.
