PLACENTIA
PLACENTIA, Aug. 27 (Spl)—During the past month oil brokers have been working among the ranchers north of Placentia and last week culminated in several leases about ready for signatures. The rancher belonging to Lemke, Pipembrink and Palmer, comprising each about 20 acres, were leased in a block to one company who were anxious to secure the undivided tract. The price involved was a bonus of $750 per acre and a royalty which was not made public.
The last ranch to be leased was that of E. C. Basten, who has already three producing shallow wells on this property.
The remaining 12 acres were leased to another company.
The bonus to be paid Mr. Basten was $1,000 per acre and $100 a month rent in addition to royalties not made public.
The John Wagner and Lemke families leave on Monday on a deer hunt in the northern part of the state.
Mrs. Annie McKim is taking Mrs. Snow's place in Dr. Kay's office during her vacation.
A mass meeting was held at the Placentia school last Monday night to obtain authority for the purchase of a new site for the primary school which it has been decided is necessary for this district. The location of the property desired for this purpose is the Baker-st site which is occupied at present by two wooden school rooms, which are sadly inadequate to this fast increasing district. The proposal met with instant enthusiastic response and it was finally decided to make the purchase. The sum involved for the four lots inclusive was $5,000 and it was decided at this meeting to lease a part of the adjoining property for playground purposes, with a view to purchase later.
