OAKLAND SALES
WIZARDS IN MEET
Preparatory to the advent of the winter season the California Oakland Motor Co., distributors in So. Calif. for the Oakland six laid its plans before its dealer organization at a banquet Monday evening in the Blue Room of the Athletic club in Los Angeles at which Harry L. Turton local Oakland dealer, was present.
The consistent growth of the Oakland Motor Car Co. in Pontiac and the construction of a branch of the Fisher Body Co. in that city to manufacture closed car bodies exclusively for the Oakland were the topics of the evening.
July was the biggest month that Oakland has had in the matter of sale in So. Calif. and it is just another rung in the ladder of popularity.
The Oakland now ranks third in production among the General Motors group and it is climbing the production ladder by leaps and bounds. The recent visit of Reeva Gartmann, president of the California Oakland Motor Co., gave him a close insight on conditions at the factory and according to him, the future of Oakland is the one bright spot in the motor car constellation.
Representatives of 27 dealers' organizations and more than that number of the organization of the California Oakland Motor Co. gathered around the table with Gartzmann as toastmaster. Each in turn recited his experiences with the Oakland in his territory, and to a man they claimed that nothing but success rewarded them for their efforts. The great reputation that this car has won for itself in the past two years have completely reversed the order of things in motor car circles, and if what Gartzman told his guests is only half the truth, a new star will have arisen to shine in the motor car firmament.

Battery Mystery to Most Drivers
To most automobilists the inside of a battery is a subject of considerable mystery. Most of them know that the box does not contain a series of gears and pinions such as are found in the transmission, but aside from that their knowledge is more or less nil, says A. Bevillard of the Anaheim Ignition Depot.
Although the extensive use of the automobile today has necessitated a general all-around knowledge of the elementary mechanical working of the machine, few people bother to find out what makes the battery do the excellent work it does.
"Service station men all over the country are united in a desire to educate every car owner as to the inside workings and the proper care of the battery. It is to their interests that car owners should be able to get the maximum use from their batteries.
Bevillard, of the local Willard service station, says that they make it a point to explain the essentials of the battery to every patron who will take the time to listen. And it is surprising how many remark that they didn't know this thing or that thing about batteries before.
HERE'S A WAY TO IMPROVE THAT FORD
Atwater Kent ignition and a Rayfield carburetor are recommended to Ford owners by Robert V. Jenson, local distributor, if they want to see cars exhibit their best power.
The Atwater Kent ignition is easily intalled and adaptable to any Ford car, of new or old model. The radiator doesn't have to be removed, and on Fords equipped with starting and lighting the L. A. system is operated on the current from the storage battery, using one Ford coil with vibrators screwed down tight. This leaves three spare coils for emergency.
The advantage of the Rayfield

5,704 AT BUICK FACTORY IN DAY
Five thousand seven hundred and four persons visited the show rooms of the Flint Buick branch on one day to view for the first time the open models of the 1924 Buick line. From early morning until late at night there was a constant stream of people attracted by the fast spreading news that Buick was showing the greatest line of cars in its history. Actual orders, aggregating 159, were filed during the day. More than 2,000 people entered the doors of the branch on another day, according to a statement reaching the Anaheim Auto Co., local distributors.
Before the week was ended, scores of brand new Buicks were seen on the street and on every corner groups were discussing them.
The trings who visited the Branch, not only looked over the cars with the keenest interest, but either placed orders or promised to do so later.
Of the six-cylinder body models one is known as the "Double Service Sedan". It is painted a durable black and the interior is lined and upholstered in easily cleaned material. The result is a car that can be used for the roughest of business and at the same time quickly adaptable to social purposes.
The five-passenger brougham touring sedan is the other extreme—a luxurious carriage in every respect. It has appointments of an ultra-modish character and an equipment unusually complete.

EMIR, ONE OF THIRTY-TWO PERFORMING TIGERS WITH RINGLING BROS. AND BARNUM & BAILEY
Those of us who see the movie hero barely escape the jaws of some jungle beast are at times inclined to think the "big moment" is attended by some mysterious trick in photography. Perhaps that is the case on the screen, but there will shortly come to Santa Ana six men and two daring women who twice daily permit themselves to be locked in with the most ferocious of wild animals. They are the trainers of the jungle actors with the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus.
These fearless trainers include Mable Stark, Caro Rouel, Christian Schroeder, Rodolpho Matthies and M Philadelphia. They accompanied Europe's biggest wild animal acts to America this spring. They perform their beautiful charges in three steel arenas which, prior to the main-tent equestrian numbers, are set down over the circus rings. Complete companies of Nubian lions, Bengal and Sumatran tigers, black panthers, full grown leopards, jaguars and polar bears are exhibited. These splendid animals ride upon swiftly running horses, "shoot the chutes," leap through hoops or over objects twice the height of their trainers' heads, form mixed tableau, draw vehicles and dine at tables with their teachers.
Europe has been combed to obtain its biggest and most exciting wild animal acts and its foremost trainers. Other recently imported displays present 200 trained horses. In addition, 700 men and women stars and scores of more familiar animal actors such as forty elephants monkeys, dogs and seals, will be seen when the double circus exhibits in Santa Ana Tuesday, Sept. 11.
NASH FOUR DOOR COUPE MAKES HIT
Outspoken admiration has been expressed by those who have seen the new Nash four door coupe which typifies Nash ingenuity in the creation of original body types. Shipments of 13 models comprising the new Nash line have been going forward now for several weeks, and the cars are on display at dealer points throughout the country. Advancements and improvements both in engineering and equipment have been embodied in these new models with no advance in price.
"There is no question but that the new four door coupe is an outstanding leader in closed car field," said E.H. McCarty, general sales manager of the Nash Motors Co. Its design impels admiration while its appointments and riding qualities are in thorough keeping with its handsome appearance."
Through use of every interior inch the car has been made spacious for all passengers and yet it is so compact that handling is greatly facilitated. The body, finished in lustrous maroon, is set off with black running gear and fenders. Five maroon toned disc wheels, with the fifth wheel mounted at the rear are standard equipment. There is a rear view mirror, kick plates to protect the paint, an instrument board with all instruments under glass and included in the instrument box character and an equipment usually complete.
CROSTOWN BUSSES HELP L. A. TRAFFIC
Crowstown bus service—long the subject of much heated discussion as one aid to the solution of Los Angeles’ traffic problem—has at last become a reality.
Last Saturday regular crowstown service was inaugurated by a motor bus company on Western-ave, between Los Feliz-blvd and Slauson-ave. Prior to the inauguration of this service, 18 of the buses took part in a monster parade.
These 18 busses, the first of a large order placed for future delivery, included Morelands, all of the most advanced type of motor construction.
It is interesting to note that the Morelands are a Western product, both being manufactured here in California.
Already 50 of the busses have been ordered from the Moreland Truck Co., 10 of which have been delivered.
These 10 are all Goodyear equipped with 36x6 pneumatics, and have dual tires on the rear. The combination of Moreland trucks—"Best for the West" and Goodyear tires—"Los Angeles Made for Western Trade" certainly speaks well for the fore-sight of the officials of the motor bus company who specified them.
ALEMITE GUN TO BE INSTALLED HERE
The Public Garage, which recently opened in the new building at 420 South Los Angeles-st, carrying the Moreland truck, sold one of the big machines this week to the Santa Ana Lumber Co.
In line with their policy to make their service second to none, this newest day and night garage is preparing to install a big Alemite gun, said to be the only one to be installed here. It squirts the stuff at 5,000 pounds pressure.
The garage is distributor of the Pennant motor oils and Speedol greases.
All kinds of service on all kinds of vehicles.
COURTHOUSE NEWS
General denials were made in separate answers filed by the Leach Biltwell Motor Car Co., and M. A. Leach to the suit of the Golden State National Bank, in connection with a promissory note alleged to have been given by Blanche L. Dolphin in purchasing stock in the company. The alleged note was not received, the defendants declare.

The body, finished in lustrous maroon, is set off with black running gear and fenders. Five maroon toned disc wheels, with the fifth wheel mounted at the rear are standard equipment. There is a rear view mirror, kick plates to protect the paint, an instrument board with all instruments under glass and included in the instruments is a clock of select time keeping quality.
At the rear of the car is a sturdy trunk, in-built, while strong nickel plated bars add a decorative note to the trunk and the rear of the body and permit strapping on of additional luggage without injury to the coach finish. The upholstery is of mohair and taupe in color. Other features of the new Nash four door coupe include, vanity case, smoking set, domes light, two reading lamps, wide door pockets, heater, automatic windshield wiper, robe strap and foot rest.
SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 25. Several announcements of new models have given promise of others soon to follow. As always this has held up buying a bit and with the usual delays in the delivery of the 1924 cars is likely to lower a little August new passenger car registrations from July figures.
C. M. Steeves, president of Durant-Steve Motors Inc., the Durant distributing organization here has been ordered to rest or take the consequences.
Steeves left for the east again this time for a three months' rest, as prescribed by his doctor. He will visit the summer home of W. C. Durant in Michigan and rest there. He will try and forget about business for a while.
Durant sales have been going well and the only trouble they are having here is to get enough automobiles to fill their orders.
The factory is booming, and Star sales have grown enormously too.

New Riding Qualities Appeal to Prospects
It is evident from the expressions of buyers and prospective buyers that a decided improvement has been made in the riding qualities of Dodge Brothers Motors Cars. No one who calls at the sale rooms to inspect the new line misses an opportunity to sit in the deep and roomy seats and comment on their exceptional comfort. The seats and body are considerably lower than before, not only adding to riding ease, but affording much more leg room.
In addition, the gear shift lever has been moved forward, giving an unusual amount of room; the instruments have been grouped on an attractive panel, and the leverage of the clutch pedal has been altered in such a way that the slightest pressure of the foot answers the purpose. This latter improvement is of especial interest to women who find it a great convenience in driving in heavy traffic.
OLDSTILL BREAKS HILL CLIMB RECORDS
All the way from Corey Hill at Boston to Seminary Hill at Centralia, Washington; from East Second of Hill at Fairbault, Minnesota, to Fairfield Hill at Shreveport, Louisiana, old hill climbing records have been shattered and new ones established in their places by Oldsmobile drivers, says V. V. Vanderlip, local distributor.
These tests, on the country's hardest hills, prove the amazing power of the Oldsmobile four engine. But a powerful engine such as this can function only in a chassis built proportionately strong. Every vital chassis feature of the Oldsmobile four is over-size for strength.
The frame is seven inches deep instead of the usual five and one-half inches; the rear springs are 54 inches in length, while the average for care
Parts, Accessories Department Added
The Reliable Tire Co.'s big shop is looking a little more efficient as each week passes. Roy Mendoza, the live owner and manager, is constantly introducing some improvement or other.
This week he put in a nice showcase, which he is stocking with all the parts and accessories ordinarily demanded by the motorist. The case is an adornment as well as a utility.
Sales of Para-Bell, Apex and Manhattan tires continue excellent, says Mendoza.
