In other words, but 200 out of the entire number were sufficiently equipped with horse sense, coupled with physical beauty to make good as performers. That is the assertion of Manuel Herzog, John Mayer and M. Dupree, the master trainers who spent a year in Europe assembling the companies of acting horses that are this season one of the big new features of the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Combined circus. Contrary to popular belief, elephants are more intelligent than horses. "One out of every two elephants can be taught to perform an average number of tricks," says Herzog. "But it is rare when one of four horses will have the necessary qualifications. Very often an extremely beautiful horse will prove to be absolutely rattle-brained." One of the finest of the equine companies is that performed by Herzog. The animals are arrayed in blue and silver trappings and, that the audience may better follow the intricate drills, bear metal numbers ranging from 1 to 12. At the conclusion of their act the horses are led into a state of confusion by the grooms, after which merely to the music of the band and without the slightest word of command, they find their places in sequence of numbers. Twenty bloodied high-school horses ridden by riders of international fame, form another unusual display. These include an absolute novelty in the introduction of performing Percherons—handsome fellows that weigh more than two thousand pounds each, who strive to outdo their more agile Arabian cousins. Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey combined will exhibit in Santa Ana, Tuesday, Sept. 11. KLAHOMA TRAIN BANDITS GET $20,500 KANSAS CITY, Aug. 24—Loot obtained by bandits who early Tuesday held up a Katy passenger train near Okese, Okla., escaping with registered mail approximately $20,500. It was announced here today by L.A. Johnson, chief postoffice inspector of this division. Johnson had previously estimated the loss at only $500. "We have checked up and found that approximately $20,000 in registered liberty bonds were taken in addition to the $500 in currency", Johnson said. A complete check of the loss, that is necessarily slow, is being made. It may reveal an even greater loss in currency, Johnson said. Twelve men and one woman are held at Pawhuska, Okla., in connection with the robbery. Mr. James E. Reynolds and wife DALEY'S STORE TO GIVE AWAY FORD Manager A. J. Frerking in charge of the local Daley's Rock Bottom Store announces that his firm is giving away a new 1923 Model Touring Car on October 1. Under the plan announced, tickets will be given away at the Daley's stores to anyone who asks for them. A stub of the ticket is to be deposited in a box at the store and on October 1, a big public drawing will determine the winning number. No purchase is necessary to get a ticket. All you are required to do is ask for the tickets, drop the stub in the box and keep the long end, which will have to be presented in event your ticket wins the Ford. SPANISH WAR VETS ENJOY BEAN PICNIC (By A Comrade) Calumpit Camp and Auillary, United Spanish War Veterans, had another big time Tuesday evening, at Orange-co park. A feed, like the soldiers of '93 enjoyed, was served at 7:30 p.m. and consisted of beans cooked in several ways. Slunggullion, hard tack and coffee. This was added to by a few by the addition of potato salad and dill pickles. Ninety-four people attended the "feast" which was presided over by Senior Vice Commander Henry G. Miller. Comrades M. C. Cooper and Frank P. Rowe looked after the coffee making and showed by their proficiency that they had served their apprenticeship some time in the past by having been put in that much honored class of soldiers called "Kitchen Police"; and Comrade Botkin must have been in the same class judging by the manner in which he helped serve the coffee. Much amusement was aroused by the Comrades joining in a "Yell" composed by Mr. D. C. Denny, of Pullerton, who was a guest of Comrade Miller. It sounded something like this: "Here we are, U. S. W. V., full of bearr, Out, oui, oui; Though we consider ourselves as 'Vet', Believe me, Gang, we're not dead picnic at Fairmount Park, Riverside, to be given by the Camps of Southern California. At 8:30 p.m. they adjourned to the dance pavilion where the entertainment of the evening commenced by Mrs. Buelah Botkin playing "The Star Spangled Banner" while all stood at attention. Then with Comrade Benjamin F. Botkin as master of ceremonies they played 'Automatic,' Three Captains were chosen and in turn they chose up lines and each line chose the name of a make of automobile, then each line was given a hoop and each person had to go through the hoop to the end of the line and then repeat until the hoop was at the starting point. The line getting the hoop back to its Captain first was declared the winner. The hoops were covered with paper, one being white, one red and the other blue. Mrs. Edith Camp, Captain of the winning line, had a Jordan car for her line; Mrs. Janet Offutt, with a Bulck car, was second and Miss Mildred, with a Stutz, car come in last. Much cheering and coaching marked this part of the game. Junior Vice Commander Walter W. Tantlinger announced, for Mrs. Anna Jones, that she would entertain the women of the Auxiliary, at the Beach home of her father, Mr. John Bernhard, 202 Central-ave., Balboa, next Thursday; this is to be an all-day meeting.
