MONDAY, AUGUST 20, 1923. BASEBALL BOXING SPORTS ANAHEIM DEFEATS MONROVIA-ARCADIA BILLS BY 9 TO 3 It makes no difference what’s the combination, nor how many changes are made in the lineup, Anaheim Elks go right out and win just the same. Yesterday, with two regular infielders missing, the local Bills did up Monrovia-Arcadia 5 to 3 on the local high school field. The veteran battery of Hughes and Callan is the answer. Hughes let down the team with four scattered hits and not one of the three tallists hung up by the visitors was earned. Anaheim hasn’t lost a game in the Elks league and yesterday’s win assures the right to go to Eureka next month for the finals. Anaheim’s victory was a great blow to Manager Loren Ury of Pasadena. Just five times last week, Ury phoned the monrovia-Arcadia manager urging him to take the strongest possible lineup against Anaheim. Such a sweet disposition! Doty Bush had a great day yesterday, scoring four of our nine counters and polling out two snappy doubles and a single. Curly McClain didn’t have a chance to show his stuff at third where he was planted in the absence of Ramage. Not a ball came down his avenue. The last scheduled game is with Pasadena at Brookside park next Sunday. The locals will be accompanied by a large contingent of royal rooters as the meeting of Anaheim and Pasadena is always a classic argument. TAGING ALL THE DASES "Pop" Young waited for the 12th inning before pulling his homer and a two to one victory for the Giants over the Pirates. Waite Hoyt blew his temper and ball game in the eighth inning when the White Sox rolled up three runs and wcn over the Yankees to three. The Cubs and Dodgers gave a burlesque, the westerners being the best actors and winning fifteen to eight. Piercey's wild heave enabled Cobb to score in the ninth and Detroit won from the Red Sox to four. The Senators scored four runs in the sixth and made it four straight over the Browns. Uhle's pitching and hitting enabled the Indians to beat the Athletics, fifteen to three. The Cleveland pitcher drove in five runs. The fact that Pirpo pressed with the service De Forest, veteran trail mainly responsible for this country to date, added ticism of fandom that will be able to take away there is one man, he is breathing a sigh of He is Tex Rickard, pro fight. Staff Correspondent) NEW YORK, Aug. 20.—A little job like training for a fight for the world's championship does not seem to worry Luis Angel Firpo. With the fight less than three weeks off, the Wild Bull of the Pamas got back to New York from his "barnstorming" tour and will hang around the city for a few days before hiting to Atlantic City to get into condition for the big bout of his career. The fact that Jack Dempsey has been putting in some telling training stunts for the last few weeks did not seem to concern the Argentine. He seemed nice worried over the fact that he was "done out" of $2,000 of his $4,000 guarantee in his bout with Joe Downey in Indianapolis last Friday night. That bout came near having a fatal ending and for 24 hours it was not determined whether the wild bull's punch would have a serious result on Downey. Whether the barnstorming trip of the challenger has done him a world of good in his efforts to condition himself is a question he is seeking to solve. He believes the trip just finished was the needed seasoning for his coming bout with the champion. He believes meeting the second raters he did enabled him to increase his battling prowess and that he will be in tip top shape for Dempsey. But fistic fans are skeptical of the wild bull's claims. Never before in the history of the ring has an aspirant for the heavyweight championship rebounded. SCHOOL DISTRICT ASKS FOR $40,000 The Anaheim elementary school district has asked for special taxes of $40,000 for the next fiscal year ending June 30, 1924, K. P. Mitchell, county superintendent, today, when his annual budget, submitted to supervisors, was filed. For building purposes the district wants $19,434 and for its kindergarten $2,000. The high school district seeks $96,330. The total amount asked by the elementary school districts of the county is $532,281 and by the high school districts $348,200. Junior college districts ask $14,523.18 in reimbursements. Elementary school districts request the following sums: District Special Building K'garten. The girl wonder by defeating Mrs. Mallory proved her supremacy of the United States and by her victories over Miss McKane established her right next in rank to the great French star Suzanne Lenglen. British critics accompanying the British team claim Miss Wills is the French girl's equal if not superior. Next season, if all goes well, will tell the tale, as the American champ is almost sure to try for the world's honors. Miss Wills will awaken interest in the next international play. Mrs. Mallory's failure to defeat the French star had caused the fans to lose hope that Amricons would win the world's honors but the new champion will have all America pulling for her. Journeyed down to Huntington Beach Friday evening to see Kooco Stramaglia in action. Curly McClaim invited me to go with him and being that Curly is a settled married man and does not break the speed limits I accepted. We arrived late and had to stretch our necks considerable to see the ring from the seats we were allotted. If Billy Darnley had ever had a mob like Friday night's at the old Anaheim arena he would have fallen dead. There was not standing room. Billy was there and strutted one of his boys to a clean win; Johnny Adams. Besides Adams there were five others who used to show in Anaheim. They were: Blackie Rice, Johnny McGraw, Packy McMullen, Jack Dmanan and Harry Lee. All of these boys went over big at Huntington Beach but they never could stir up much excitement in Anaheim. This Rocco bird who was supposed to be the main attraction did not get to demonstrate his stuff much. He is not very impressive to look at, but Madison Sexton next Wednesday is about the early and hits that he ready to carryraglia is. The Hunt nounced the other great winner. If advise your coach does as before the S SHOCK SOUTH IL., Aug. 99 of 100 may mark productivity grand Amateur got under. SWIM POLKEN Miss Zetta When the outfitting trip to the challenger has done him a world of good in his efforts to condition himself is a question he is seeking to solve. He believes the trip just finished was the needed seasoning for his coming bout with the champion. He believes meeting the second raters he did enable him to increase his battling prowess and that he will be in tip top shape for Dempey. But fistic fans are skeptical of the wild bull's claims. Never before in the history of the ring has an aspirant for the heavyweight championship postponed his training until a little more than three weeks before the bout. Challengers usually have taken months to prepare for such a bout. The fact that Firpo also has dispensed with the services of Jimmy De Forest, veteran trainer, who was mainly responsible for his success in this country to date, adds to the skepticism of fandom that the Argentine will be able to take away Jack's title. There is one man, however, who is breathing a sigh of relief today. He is Tex Rickard, promotor of the fight. He did not want Firpo to go on his recent tour. Now that he is back, Tex is breathing easier for the success of the bout—financially—is assured. HOYT SUSPENDED CHICAGO, Aug. 20. President Ban Johnson of the American League indefinitely suspended Walter Hoyt, Yankee pitcher, today for Hoyt's outburst Sunday. Hoyt was charged with slugging Umpire-in-chief Owens. Leopards thrive in captivity. RICHFIELD BEATS WASHINGTON CUBS For the second time, Richfield Spanish team defeated Washington Cubs yesterday afternoon at Reenfield. The score was 9 to 1. The veteran Richfield battery, Bleecker and Costillo, had good support; making it a snappy game, more interesting than the score indicates. Bleecker fanned 11 men. There was a large crowd.
