STAPLES DRIVES INTO HIGH SIERRAS
If there is one thing that isn't fair to a person who is trying to keep his mind on his work it is to send him a flock of kodak pictures of the camp in the mountains where you are spending your vacation, and getting plenty of good trout fishing. Early this week a set of enchanting pictures were received by Harry Riley, local Studebaker dealer, from Clem Staples, who for three years was one of the star salesmen of the Harry Riley organization in Anaheim. "The effect of the pictures was disorganizing enough, states Mr. Riley, but the letter that came with them was too much."
Staples is well-known here among many as being a great lover of the sport of trout fishing. From his letters to Mr. Riley and the pictures of his trip one can get all the facts regarding the best place in the state to go for real trout fishing. Clem has been selling Studebakers since 1913 and is now the proud possessor of a Big Six which he drove to Parchers Camp in the High Sierras to spend his vacation. Parchers Camp is located near Bishop, 335 miles from Los Angeles and Clem made the trip in exactly 12 hours to the tune of 16 miles per gallon of gas and using but one quart of oil in the round trip of 670 miles. From Bishop to Parchers Camp is 23 miles and an elevation of 10,000 feet is reached with snow on the ground the year around.
Poor Carburetion Means Less Power
The trouble when the engine does not appear to have much power is probably with the ignition, and when the ignition isn't right the carburetor is as likely as not to blame, says Robert V. Jenner, distributor of the Prest-o-Lite battery and Rayfield carburetor.
A distinct feature of the Rayfield is the fact that after it is once admitted, no further adjustments are made necessary on account of seasonable weather changes. This is made possible by the use of the thinner Fit Price to Tire, Not Tire to Price
The fallacy of determining prices by competition is pointed out in the August number of the Brunwick Booster, official organ of the Brunswick-Balke Collender Co., makers of Brunwick tires.
In such a case the tires are built to sell at such prices and quality is sacrificed. Quantity production will lower prices to a certain extent, but quality again may be undermined.
Brunwickes may cost a little more than certain other brands of tire, but they are worth it, says Clyde Williams of Daniels & Williams, Northern Orange-co distributors.
GOODYEAR OFFICIAL TAKES “CAMEL” TIP
Linking bygone centuries with the present day, the gigantic Sequoia of California stand as the greatest living monuments to the conquest of time. Visitors of Europe mark at the roaring of the old Roman gods, buildings and arenas to be found in that section of the universe, where in the Golden State Californians are native senses who had withstood hundreds of winter storms before the Trojan war commenced. Several were good sized youngsters when King Tut ruled in Egypt.
There are several groups: the Big Trees, but Sequoia Nation Park essentially the big tree; Forest over 1,000,000 square feet of all sizes; 12,000 of which exceed 35ft in diameter.
Sequoia is an irresistible attraction for camels; it seems, for the Franklin Camel I visited the Park twice last year, and the Franklin Camel II, latest scent car of Ralph Hamlin, Franklin Distributor of Los Angeles, recently returned from its first call to the home of the forest giants.
Making fair speed to and from the park, and enjoying the trip immensely, the party, which included H. B. Blythe, factory general superintendent of the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. of California, H. B. Barron, superintendent to the N.E.W. low on a furious car grille tilted vally driver equally diagonal trunk. All the top of distinctive equipment There is a heater, tall silk curtain
The more when the engine does appear to have much power is probably with the ignition, and when the ignition isn't right the carburetor is as likely at not to blame, says Robert V. Jensen, distributor of the Prest-o-Lite battery and Rayfield carburetor.
A distinct featurer of the Rayfield is the fact that after it is once admitted, no further adjustments are made necessary on account of seasonable weather changes. This is made possible by the use of the thermostatic air shutter (patent applied for) which is a feature found on the Rayfield Carburetor only.
In cold weather this shutter remains closed and does not admit cold air into the carburetor, thus providing for all heated air in the carburetor. In warmer and hot weather the thermostatic air shutter will automatically open up, after the motor reaches a running temperature, admitting a certain amount of cool air and providing for the same temperature of air supplied to the carburetor all the year around.
The air shutter is made of an alloy of expensive metals, known as thermostatic metal, which expands or contracts automatically on the application of heat or cold.
Every Ford owner realizes that during hot weather the loss of power in the motor, caused by the fact that the carburetor and manifold reach too high a temperatuer for efficiency, is very noticeable. With the Rayfield thermostatic control the carburetor operate at the same temperature at all times, thereby maintaining the same power and performance regardless of weather conditions.

Sequoia is an irradiable attraction for camels, it seems, for Franklin Camel I visited the Park twice last year, and the Franklin Camel II, latest scout car of Ralph Hamlin, Franklin Distributor of Los Angeles, recently returned from its first call to the home of the forest giants.
Making fair speed to and from the park, and enjoying the trip immensely, the party, which included H. E. Blythe, factory general superintendent of the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. of California, H. B. Barron, superintendent of tire construction and E. Crossdale, of the tire testing division, voted Sequela by far the most interesting and attractive spot anywhere in the High Sierras. The praise beowed upon the park by the Camel pilot, R. L. Larson, was taken with a grain of salt before the trip was taken—but the park never fails to make new friends and hold old ones—which holds true of the Franklin, also.
It was but fitting that Goodyear Wingfoot cord Tires with which the Camel is equipped should pass the 10,000 mile mark on the trip. In passing it must be stated that the scout car has always been Goodyear-equipped.
After checking up on the rough usage which the tires on the Camel gets Mr. Blythe is of the opinion that Franklin owners ought to receive exceptionally good service from Goodyear All Weather Cords if the Franklin Camel can roll up 10,000 or 12,000 miles on a set of Goodyear Wingfoot Cords; the way it bats over desert roads and mountain grades.
Smash Prices on Exide Batteries
Exide batteries were reduced from three to five dollars each this week. The new prices, effective August 15, affect all sorts of batteries, regardless of type or the car for which it is designed.
Harr and Pulfer, pproprefetors of the Exide Battery Station, local distributors are now installing a second battery re-charging outfit with a capacity of 35 batteries. The washrack is being abolished, making room for the added facilities.

RADIO NOISES ARE PARTLY AVOIDABLE
Anyone who has listened in one radio set during the approach of thunder storm has little new to cover in the way of frying, blasting, bubbling and sputtering noises. It is only natural for the listener wonder where they all come from says A. Bevillard of the Anaheim Public Depot.
In general there are just two kinds of radio noises; the ones that can be avoided and ones that can be. The first class are all of the natural ones that result from electrical disturbances in the ether, through which all radio waves travel. It must be remembered that these waves form low the same laws and behave in exactly the same manner as the waves created "to order" by man-made machinery.
The second class of noises is the result of faulty wiring, or in many cases imperfect or improperly constructed batteries. Wires must be tight. It is for this reason that many build radio sets take special care to solder all joints even though binding posts provide a seemingly tight grip on the wires.
An important feature of the "B" battery is that it must be able to hold its charge for long periods not only because of economy, but because electrical leakage from cell to cell or from positive to negative posts of any particular cell is distinctly a noise producer. It is to prevent this disturbing effect that the Willard Storage a Bittery Co., has developed a form of "B" battery in which cell is a glass jar capped with a special screw top and separated from its neighbors by compartment partitions. It is said that the leakage and consequently the possibility of "B" Battery noises is practically eliminated.
