FIX PLANS FOR SCRAPPING BOATS
WASHINGTON, Aug. 17.—The United States will lose no time in getting rid of the capital ships that it has agreed to scrap under the naval limitation treaty of the Washington conference.
The United States, Great Britain and Japan will scrap a total of 57 ships having an aggregate displacement of 1,588,943 tons. The total cost to this government will be about $375,000,000, more than $300,000,000 on ships already constructed and about $75,000,000 on broken contracts to firms building vessels.
No action is being taken at the present time by the navy department for disposition of the Delaware and North Dakota now on the annual midshipmen's practice cruise. The treaty does not require that these vessels be scrapped until they are replaced by the Colorado and West Virginia, now under construction.
The Washington, of latest type construction and the South Carolina, a vessel of the old type will be used by the navy for experimental work in under water and deck attack. If not sunk, these ships will be disposed of by sale or scraping.
The New Jersey and Virginia are to be turned over to the army air service for bombing attack practice off the Virginia capes next month.

BREACH WIDENED BY GEN. WOOD'S TALK
MANILA, Aug. 17.—The split between Governor General Wood and Manuel Quezqui, president of the Philippine senate, which resulted in the resignation of the cabinet, was widened today following an address by Governor Wood before the American Chamber of Commerce.
Quezonist papers this morning characterized Wood as "acting in a criminal manner in divulging the document," which told of a shortage in the Philippine National Bank which is variously estimated at from $28,000,000 to $50,000,000.
Grievances of politicians over the Philippine national bank are due to the stoppage of the free circulation of public funds among their friends. Wood declared.
"The bank is now in better condition than it has ever been before and will be supported by the government."
The audience which represented leaders in Manila's business life enthusiastically applauded Wood's comments during the talk.

YOUTH CAPTURED IN BANK HOLDUP
DENVER, Aug. 17.—Ray McCoy, 22, giving his home address as Athens, Ohio, failed today in a desperate attempt to hold up the Union State Bank.
Entering the bank he presented a torn dollar bill to the cashier, asking him to exchange it for a new one. As the cashier started to make the exchange, McCoy stuck a .45 caliber revolver thru the window, ordering the cashier to hand over $340 that was laying on the counter.
McCoy secured the money, run from the bank and jumped onto an explosive truck ordering the driver to "step on it". The driver and a companion, after going two blocks, succeeded in overpowering McCoy. He was arrested and the money recovered.

STEAL 40 FOWLS
Forty chickens were stolen last night from the chicken ranch of Judge Smith at Stanton, according to a report made to Ed Marlon this morning. The chickens evidently had their heads cut off to keep them from squaking, since one was left on the spot beheaded. This is the second chicken ranch raided in that vicinity within a week.
