MINTER CONFESSES
LOVE FOR TAYLOR
LOS ANGELES, Aug. 14.—Casting a new light on the mystery that for almost two years has surrounded the murder here of William Desmond Taylor, motion picture director, Mary Miles Minter, film actress, admitted today that she was engaged to marry Taylor at the time he was slain.
In declaring that she had been engaged to the director, the young actress declared she had wanted to announce her love for Taylor to the world but that she had kept it a secret on advice of her mother, Mrs. Charlotte Shelby, from whom she is now estranged and against whom she threatens to file suit for the return of $1,500,000, which she claims her mother owes her.
At the time the police and other authorities investigated the murder of Taylor without finding the slayer, Miss Minter was interrogated at the district attorney's office, but never revealed that she was betrothed to the slain man.
The actress declared her affection for Taylor had its inception when they first met and it was a case of love at first sight and that she still loved him in death today.
After a year and a half of silence, it was learned today that the new information supplied by Miss Minter will undoubtedly furnish a strong motive for another person, other than Edward Sands, Taylor's valet-secretary, sought as the slayer because he might have had a combination reason of revenge and robbery, to slay the director.
Miss Minter, however, is reluctant to believe that the person her new information casts suspicion upon could be guilty of the murder. In fact the thought never occurred to her until pointed out by others.
