POLITICAL TURMOIL IS PRECIPITATED BY PRESIDENT'S DEATH SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 3.—A political turmoil of almost unprecedented proportions has been precipitated in the Republican party by the sudden and dramatic death of President Harding. This was the opinion heard on every side among politicians here today. President Harding was virtually assured of re-nomination next year—if he wanted it. And there existed no doubt at all in the minds of Mr. Harding's personal and political intimates that he would be a candidate to succeed himself. Now Mr. Harding is gone, as an actual and titular leader of his party, strongly entrenched by virtue of his great office, he held in check the many divergent elements of the party. He held the whip hand over progressives and conservatives alike and while they chafed over it, they nevertheless stayed in line on major matters of party policy. Who will succeed Mr. Harding as party leader is a question trembling today on the lips of all political leaders. Opinions are many and divergent upon this score, but upon one phase of it there is general unanimity—the death of President Harding throws the Republican nomination in 1924 wide open, even as it was in 1920, with no less than a dozen candidates certain to be in the field. Instead of being the placid, cut-and-dried meeting to renominate Mr. Harding, next years' Republican convention has become over night a free for all. The one great leash that has held in check the political ambitions of a score of men in the party has been dramatically broken by one sudden, fearful thrust. President Coolidge becomes the titular leader of the party, of course. It remains to be seen whether he will become the actual leader of the party. A number of men who would not announce their candidacy so long as Mr. Harding desired a renomination are now expected to become "availiable." NEW LAGUNA BELL SUBSTATION IN USE Augmenting the electric energy distributed in Anaheim and vienna, and all of So. Calif., south of Tehachapi, the million dollar power terminal of the So. Calif. Edison Co. known as the new Laguna Bell substation in the southeastern suburb of Los Angeles, went into service Thursday, according to District Manager W. L. Deimling. This station, which is the largest on the Pacific Coast and which is the first station in California constructed for operation at 220,000 volts, is the second step in making available to Anaheim additional emergency to be transmitted over the Big Creek lines by reason of their diversion (to this high voltage). It will bear the 125,000 horsepower of new electric energy which comes on to the Edison lines this year from the construction of the largest hydro-electric power house west of Niagara Falls and 20 per cent additional generator capacity to the first power house on the Big Creek—San Joaquin project. Describing the features of the new Laguna Bell station to the Plain Dealer, District Manager Demiling Balance Story Bank accounts and shafts have one thing: They both can get out. There is this difference: the bank account usually in balance, while the crankshaft does not have pains to see that it fails. What difference in engine performance puzzles most car owners; they hear their more vention has become over night a free for all. The one great leash that has held in check the political ambitions of a score of men in the party has been dramatically broken by one sudden, fateful thrust. President Coolidge becomes the titular leader of the party, of course. It remains to be seen whether he will become the actual leader of the party. A number of men who would not announce their candidacy so long as Mr. Harding desired a renomination are now expected to become "available" and to energetically start to point their political fortunes toward next year's nomination convention—now only ten months away. Here in California, it is regarded as certain that Senator Hiram Johnson will become an active candidate. Johnson lost the nomination at Chicago three years ago in the famous three-way deadlock between his forces those of Governor Frank O. Lowden and General Leonard Wood. Of these three, Johnson is regarded a certain candidate, and the former Illinois governor a potential one. In the cabinet there are Secretary of State Charles E. Hughes, whose defeat by a paper-thin margin in 1916 afforded one of the most spectacular chapters in American political history. There is Secretary of Commerce Herbert Hoover—another candidate of 1920. And there is President Coolidge himself. Whether he will be a candidate to succeed himself is a question that is going to be of great concern to the politicians in coming weeks. 30 NEW WELLS STARTED Oil field operations reported the week ending July 28, show 30 new wells started, compared with 22 previous week. Scenic Park-to-Park Highway Is Opened WASHINGTON, Aug. 3. —The last link of a 6,000-mile International Park-to-Park motor highway, across the Canadian Rockies is now open to the public, the Interior Department announced. The tourist road is known as the Banff-Windermere Highway. The opening ceremonies included cutting ribbons on the last link. This system, the first to be constructed across the Central Rockies will touch 12 National parks in the United States and three in Canada in a grand circle tour. The scenery to be found along this highway is said to equal any of the famous beauty spots abroad. The parks in the United States the highway touches are: Mount Ranier National Park, Washington; Crater Lake National Park, Oregon; Lassen Volcanic, Yosemite, General Grant and Sequoia National parks, California; Zion National Park, Utah; Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona; Mesa Verde and Rocky Dear Mrs. Thompson, unmarried woman 30 I have a married six years older than I three children. Nothing in the more natural than with your sister's care would not talk because would be quite proper me you ought to come out sister in this may relieve her while rest. Dear Mrs. Thompson young man, engaged crazy about another there is a girl we live with her grand her own father and separated. Balanced Crankshaft Stops That Vibration Bank accounts and motor crankshafts have one thing in common: They both can get out of balance. There is this difference, however, the bank account usually starts out in balance, while the automobile crankshaft does not always—unless the manufacturer has taken special pains to see that it does. Engineers agree that perfectly balanced crankshafts are vitally important to the life of engine bearings and all reciprocating parts, yet there are comparatively few car manufacturers who put into production practice the facts they have learned in laboratory tests on balancing crankshafts. Reo Motor Car Company at Lansing, Michigan, is one of the few factories who use laboratory exactness in production practice. What is balance? What happens when a crankshaft is not in balance? What difference does it make in engine performance? These questions puzzle most car owners when they hear their more mechanically weight than there is on the opposite, the act revolving the shaft hundreds and thousands of times per minute will exaggerate this unevenness almost unbelievably. The heavier side tries harder to break away from the confining bearings; its greater mass causes the shaft and its bearings to vibrate or throb as it whirls on its axis. A balanced shaft, then, is one that has an equal mass of weight at all points equally distant from the center of the shaft. What difference does crankshaft balance make in engine operation? Obviously from the foregoing, an unbalanced shaft creates powerful vibration as it revolves. Now, a revolving shaft exerts outward pressure constantly on all its bearings. If the crankshaft throbs it is apparent that the bearings must overcome such impulse or beat, in addition to their regular duties of holding the shaft to its true axis. In effect every throb of the shaft is like a hammer blow against the HEART HOME PROBLEMS Dear Mrs. Thompson: I am an unmarried woman 32 years old and I have a married sister who is two years older than I am. She has three children. For some time my sister's health has not been good and now the doctor has said she must go away for a month's vacation. They have located a place on a farm where she thinks she would like to stay if she can get any one to stay with the children. She wants me to come, but I hardly know whether it would be proper, since my brother-in-law would stay there too. I do not feel I can do anything that would compromise my reputation, which is good, if I do say it. What do you think? ANNA W. Nothing in the world would be more natural than for you to stay with your sister's children. People would not talk because the situation would be quite proper. It seems to me you ought to consider your worn out sister in this matter anyway and relieve her while she gets a good rest. Dear Mrs. Thompson: I am a young man, engaged to one girl and crazy about another. Next door to us there is a girl who has come to live with her grandparents because her own father and mother have separated. Naturally I see quite a Mountain National Parks, Colorado; Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming; and Glacier National Park, Montana. In effect every throb of the shaft is like a hammer blow against the face and entire structure of each bearing. The result is destructive. A glass window will resist considerable pressure if it is applied evenly, but a sharp blow will shatter the same glass. FICKLE. I never advise marriage without love. Probably you had better tell the girl that you do not love her as you thought you did, and therefore you want her to release you from the engagement and forget about you. Such a thing is a disagreeable matter and ought to teach, you to be more cautious next time and not become engaged unless you are very sure of your love.
