WHISTON FINISHES WELL IN 87 DAYS
(By Ellwood J. Munger)
At Santa Fe Springs, H. L. Whiston stopped into the lime light as a contractor and driller of successful oil when he completed and put on production a well for the Southern California Oil Company in exactly 87 days, 17 days of this time could be deducted for the refting and cementing of two strings of pipe. The Southern California Oil Co.'s producer was completed at 4620 just 74 feet in the oil sand. The well started off at 3700 barrels and is producing the usual high gravity Meyer sand product. The Southern California Oil Company began operations in the old Montebello field two years ago drilling a wild cat test well on the extreme west side of the field. The company failed to get a well, but the stockholders stuck together, came to Santa Fe Springs, got Whiston to drill them a well, and the Southern California Oil Co. is numbered among the old producers of Southern California.
The Boeske Oil Company's No. 1 completed by the McKeon Drilling Company at 4070 is a producer at 1500 barrels. This nice well is doing 35 gravity oil and puts the Boeske Oil Company well tap in the list of producers at Santa Fe Springs.
Kirkpatrick Brothers got into the producers list at the Spring with a 2500 barrel well on the Syndicate No. 1 property. The producer was drilled to 4681 and is making 34.7 gravity oil. The Kirkpatrick have had their trouble in getting into production, but have arrived.

Kirkpatrick Brothers got into the producers list at the Spring with a 2500 barrel well on the Syndicate No. 1 property. The producer was drilled to 4681 and is making 34.7 gravity oil. The Kirkpatricks have had their trouble in getting into production, but have arrived.
Every once in a while the showings in the L. B. Chase well drilling the southwest section of the Springs field look like a "Million Dollars." A showing at 1800-2000 looked so good that it was given a tryout. A hauling test failed to find much oil, although at the time the drilling was under way the "ditch" showed oil enough to make a producer. Another showing at 2249-69 even looks better than the first big showing and the management may be tempted to try this one out also. These exceptional good showings are unusual, and somewhat baffling as they fail to come up to expectations when tried out.
The General Petroleum Corporation led the Springs producers for new wells this past week. The General Petroleum put two wells on, one at 4500 and the other at 2800. The big well completed by the G. P. is Santa Fe No. 9finished at 4700. Santa Fe No. 39 also completed at 4700 feet is the 2800 barrel 'producer. Both the new wells are making 34 gravity oil, and flowing clean oil.
The Lunata Oil Company has arrived at what is believed to be the most interesting phase of its career. At 4609 the Luneta Oil Co. struck an oil sand that looks very promising. A 100 feet of hole was made in advance and the new hole continues to carry the sand in streaks. The Luneta Oil Company has retained the services of the Spengler Core Drilling Company and will take a core of every foot of hole drilled from now on. With wells shut down in the vicinity of the Luneta Oil Co. waiting on developments the work of the Spengler people and the Luneta will be watched with tremendous interest. Von Rinke formerly geologist for the Netherlands Oil Interests is responsible for the Luneta Oil Co.'s location, and should an oil well be obtained Mr. Rinke will come in for a large share of the honor.
The Standard Oil Company's test well on the Brownrigg-Keller lease No. 2 now at 6500 feet is the deepest test hole now drilling in Southern California. At 6500 the formation is a very hard shell and the oil indications do not seem to be there or anywhere else in the hole.
The development progress of the Springs west extension got something of a set back when the M. and H. Oil company drilled the cement out of its No. 1 and found that the water had not been shut off. A decision has been reached to proceed with the drilling and set another string of pipe soon.

PLACENTIA
PLACENTIA, Aug. 9.-The sudden death of Mrs. M. Manshardt at 1:30 e'clock on last Monday afternoon came as a great shock to her family and many friends who have made her acquaintance in the last three months, since she and Rev. Manshardt came from Topeka, Kan., to visit their son, Dr. G. A. Manshardt at the Prebystierian Manse.
Mrs. Manshardt had gone to Camp Torrey last week with her husband and son, Rev. William Manshardt and family of Los Angeles.
They were breaking camp on Monday afternoon and her husband had gone to call their granddaughter, Katherine on her inquiry for the little girl. Returning to the cabin Rev. Manshardt was in time to see her fall from the chair in which she had been sitting. A nurse in the camp worked over her but the doctor pronounced that death had been instantaneous. The body was taken to San Bernardino preparatory to being taken back to Topeka. Rev. Manshardt and his two sons, Dr. G. A. Manshardt and Rev. William Manshardt of Los Angeles left here Wednesday morning to take the body to their old home and funeral services were held there on Sunday.
The deceased was seventy-six last June and had been in poor health some time. Three sons and a daughter reside in the east. The two sons will return in a week or two but the father may go to Illinois for a time. The death is a sad shock to the elderly man who married the deceased over 58 years ago.
Mrs. E. C. Normandy was badly bruised and probably seriously injured when she was thrown from a horse and dragged some distance. Mrs. Normandy, Miss Mildred Torba and Henry Tuffree and wome friends were going riding when a short distance from home the hore was suddenly frightened and Mrs. Normandy was thrown. She was taken home and the doctor summoned but it is not known just how serious her injuries are. She was unable to stand on her feet Wednesday.
Herbert Foss, Lewis Edwardson, Walter Lucy and David Seers spent Saturday night and Sunday fishing at Laguna Beach. They returned bringing about thirty pounds of fish. Herbert Foss was voted the best

The Fullerton Dye Works, back yard will soon be enclosed with a galvanized wire fence. Inside of which there will frolie three police dogs. The firm has been annoyed considerably of late through outsiders tampering with machinery and gas, etc., and to prevent further trouble the fence will be put up and electrically wired. A burglar alarm snoo is to be placed.
The company feels its responsibility in accepting the garments of its patrons and will take all precaution to protect them.

Railroads Are Unopposed to Plan With All Traffic They Can Handle
The Anaheim district will save approximately $150,000 annually on transportation of citrus fruit by the new $7,500,004 California Steamship Co., organization of which was announced today. Charles Eygabroad is one of the directors.
The estimate is that of Manager G. W. Sandilands of the Anaheim Orange and Lemon Ass'n, and is based upon the steamship line taking 25 per cent of the fruit to New York. Sandilands includes all charges, including hauling and transhipment.
"I've been looking for this," said Sandilands. "This has got to come. The railroads are not opposed to it. According to their sentiments, the development of California will make it necessary. The railroads are going to have all they can handle, more than they can take care of. People don't realize how the fruit output of the state is increasing."
Sandilands estimates that 25 per cent of the citrus fruit is the most that the boats can take. The railroads also must be used for shipment to the Mid-West, at least until the proposed scheme of refrigerator boats up the Mississippi from New Orleans is realized, and that is still far off.
As for using the boat line to ship deciduous fruit, that will be a matter of careful preparation. Sandilands intimated, because of the longer time in shipment. Peaches, for example, would have to be picked before they were ripe, and packed accordingly.
Grapes also will present a problem. Sandilands sees the time when grape juice will be shipped by the barrel.
A pre-cooling plant in New York is part of the equipment of the line. Manager W. M. Schureman of the Anaheim Citrus Fruit Ass'n was much interested in the announcement. Schureman pointed out that the company probably would obtain its vessels from the government.
The officers of the company are: C. S. Whitcomb, one of the vice-presidents of the California Fruit Growers Exchange and the leader in the movement for a line, president; A. P. Hammond, former Pacific Coast manager of the Luckenback Steamship Co., vice-president and general manager; P. N. Bigelow, state market director, secretary. Directors include Irwin H. Rice, president of the Merchants and Manufacturers...
