POMEGRANATE DAIRY HAS NEW EQUIPMENT
The Pomegranate dairy has recently been moved to a new location near Katella road in the midst of a beautiful orange grove, and equipment added which has made it one of the finest dairies in Southern California.
Every step in the care of milk from washing and cleansing the cows to milking, cooling, iceing, boiling and delivering is done in the most scientific and sanitary manner. Milking is done by machines, the milk being drawn through a pipe and carried directly from the cow to the cooler.
This system is used quite generally in New Zealand, but is the first of its kind to be installed in the country. It is recognized that New Zealand has had the lowest death rate in the world, and that the production of milk has been highly responsible.
The plant is now completed and is supplying its customers with a fine product equal to the "certified milk" sold in the cities.
Robert Easton, manager of the dairy ranch, studied dairying in the Oregon Agriculture college and recently made a trip through the east studying the dairies, their means of production and distribution and has perfected his plant so that he now holds an enviable position in the milk producing world.

WARASH, Ind., July 31.—"Uncle Jack" Higgins effectually halted the procession, as the Englishman once said when he intended to convey that he stopped the parade when he celebrated his 105th birthday here.
The entire city of Wabash halted its activities for the moment and paid tribute to Higgins. A huge birthday party was held in the city park, and was attended by many hundreds of persons. Gifts were showered upon Higgins.
"Uncle Jack", as he is known to young and old in the city, is believed to be Indiana's oldest resident. He was born in England, and served a number of years in the British Navy then came to America to live. Although he was then already past the prime of life, he fought with the Union forces during the civil war and is now receiving a government pension. He lives with a daughter, Letitia Higgins, who is now 85 years old.
MINIMUM COST FOR WHITTIER SCHOOLS
(By International News Service)
WHITTIER, July 31.—This city holds the record for low school costs. In Southern California, less than $60 per pupil for teaching is expended by the board of trustees. P-omona and Glendale are close seconds in economical education. This figure does not allow for capital improvements, however.
Fewer cigars are smoked in the South and more on the Pacific Coast than anywhere else in this country.
GIVES LOCKED DEER HORNS TO MUSEUM
SACRAMENTO, July 31.—Bearing mute testimony to the fierceness of a battle to the death between two huge bucks, which occurred near Mt. Lassen last winter, the antlers of the animals, still locked in the grip which proved fatal to the victor as well as the vanquished, were today placed on exhibit in the State Museum.
But Richardson, a hunted living on Hat Creek, thirty-five miles northeast of Mt. Lassen, found the locked antlers last week and presented them to the state.
The position of the carcases indicated that the neck of one deer was broken and the other, unable to extricate himself, had starved to death, Richardson said.

MIKADO MELODIES
SUNG FOR ROTARIANS
The delightful old refrains of some of the principal melodies of "The Mikado" were brought back to Rotarians yesterday at their weekly luncheon in the Elks' Clubhouse by seven members of the Orange-co. Choral Union, who sang the opera in Santa Ana. The union is the same organization which sang "The Bohemian Girl" in Anaheim last winter.
There were six singers and an accompanist. The six were Fred Wilde, Bob Brown, Maurice Phillips, Ray Miles, Mrs. Arthur Way formerly of Anaheim and Edith Cornell. Ruth Armstrong was at the piano.
Half-a dozen numbers were sung including solo, trio, duet, etc.
Another feature of the program was a solo by Donald Walker, son of Secretary Tom Walker of the club. The son shortly will go to China as a missionary. Miss Ellizabe h Walker, his sister, accompanied him.
The club's attendance record now has reached 44 consecutive. 100 per cent meetings; the country's or world's record among Rotarians.
SOUTH SEA ISLAND
BELLE NO BEAUTY
(By International News Service)
ST. PAUL, Minn., July 31—In the flapper of the South Sea Islands appear as she really is there would be few shields of this country who would throw down their sweet hearts for her. The fairy maid of olive skin and slim body, garbed in a hula costume is a myth.
Following is part of the description of the hula maid of song, a brought back by Professor Washburn:
"She is rather fleshy: her skin is feathery and above all, her figure is unsightly."
The hula costumes worn by them in their dances, Professor Washburn informed his hearers, are worn with more intention of good than for grace.
Further, he said, should an American youth elect to choose one of

PIER COLLAPSES
FISHERMAN IN LAKE
(By International News Service)
WARSAW, July 31.—When a Ft. Wayne fisherman hooked a twelve-pound pike in Lake Waasee he called for assistance in landing the big catch. A crowd came running and swarmed onto the pier from which he was fishing. Stout arms heaved and pulled on the line, but the pike refused to quit the water. So strenuous became the efforts of the fishermen and so great the crowd that the pier collapsed, dropping the entire crowd into the lake. No one was hurt. The fish proved to be one of the biggest catches of the season.
