AND SHELL CO.'S MAKE NEW RECORDS By ELWOOD J. MUNGER The Roumanian oil fields will lose the honor of having the world's deepest oil producer when the General Petroleum Corporation puts its Clock No. 1 on production. The deep wells in the Roumanian field do not go over 5600 foot mark much. The General Petroleum's Clock No. 1 is now drilling at 5670 and will probably go to 5700 feet before completion. From 4060 feet the Clock well began to show oil and the formation from that point on to the present bottom has carried oil. With 1700 feet of oil bearing formation to draw upon the General Petroleum's Clock not only make one of the biggest wells ever brought in the Long Beach field but undoubtedly it will make one of the longest lived producers of Southern California. The General Petroleum's K. and H. No. 4 is another deep well that will soon be making a showing. Drilling on K and H is now close to 5300. What is believed to be the longest string of screen pipe ever put in an oil well has just been installed by the Shell Company of California is Dobyns No. 2. Drilling was completed on the Dobyns No. 2 at 5450 and the screen pipe runs from 3350 to 5450 a distance of 2100 feet. E. M. Smith the screen pipe king has the honor of having his product take care of the long stretch of oil bearing formation in the record Dobyns well. New producers worthy of mention were completed this past week by the Bona Fide Oil Company, Interstate Oil Corporation, Lang-Well, and the Universal Royal Companies. The Big Jumbo, a well that figured in the early history of the Hill Top production is back again. The Big Jumbo was redfilled and cleaned out to 3724 feet and is doing 500 barrels. REPTILE ROUTS BOYS FROM SWIMMIN' HOLE ALGOMA, WI., July 26.—Alligator may make fine pets, but as swimming hole pals well—not so good, in the estimation of the patrons of this town's "old swimmin' hole." "Kid" swimmers here were struck with consternation when they found that their favorite water rendezvous had been made a place of abode by a pet alligator five-feet in length. Every effort to compel the unwelcome addition to the gang to evacuate proved unavailing. The reptile was satisfied with conditions and refused to leave the pool. The kids are hunting a new swimmin' hole. RANCHERS TO RAISE AGR. DEPT. SALARIES SACRAMENTO, July 26.—Declaring that the State Department of Agriculture is about to some of its most capable officials because of the inadequacy of salaries paid by the state, James Mills, head of the Agricultural Council, announced today that individual farmers will be asked to subscribe sufficient money to increase the pay of the agricultural workers. "The situation is very serious," Mills asserted, "We have already lost some of our most trusted workers and others have received offers which far surpass that which the state pays. The salaries of the agricultural department heads must be increased by the next legislature and for the next two years we will endeavor to keep the department together by private subscriptions." Argentina has nearly quadrupled its production of rice since the government employed a Japanese expert a few years ago.
