Miscellaneous Widely Read Classic Pictured at United Probably the most widely read novel ever written in English is William Makepeace Thackeray's "Vanity Fair" which was published in 1845. This novel has been translated into every modern language and has been regarded in every country as one of the world's masterpieces of fiction. Many plays have been made from "Vanity Fair," notably, in America, Langdon Mitchell's adaptation under the title of "Becky Sharp" which served Mrs. Fiske as a starring vehicle for several seasons. Marie Tempest gave another version at the New Theater. The first American production was that of Brougham made in 1849; another dramatization was produced in 1857, and in 1860 Laura Keene and Dion Bouclault were seen in a different dramatization. The famous novelist and playwright, James M. Barrie, also made a stage adaptation of the novel under the name of its leading character, Becky Sharp. This novel has also been depicted on the screen both here and abroad. Mrs. Fiske used a film version of Langdon Mitchell's play about ten years ago. A new version has just been made at the Goldwyn studios by Hugo Ballin, in which Mabel Ballin is starred as Becky Sharp. This picture is being distributed by Goldwyn and will be the attrition at the United theater for 2 days, beginning today. NEW TODAY LOST—Cap to gas tank. Return to Plain Dealer office. Reward. Ross announced today that total returns would amount to approximately $270,000. With a slightly larger crop than last year, and the probability that the quality of the nuts will be better, Manager Ross predicted larger returns this year unless there is another immoderately warm spell this summer. That was responsible for the poorer quality and somewhat smaller returns last year than the year before. The meats of culls are put into glass jars and sold that way. Some of the nuts recently have been dropping from blight but not many. Ross expects good prices for the new crop. Plain Dealer Ada Bring Results. PANTOMIME by J. H. Striebel
