Tuesday, July 17, 1923. METHODISTS ROME PLANS START ROW ROME, July 17.—American Methodists are threatening the peace of Rome. The American Methodists propose to build a large international college for boys upon Monte Mario, one of the most conspicious sites in Rome overlooking the Vatican. The Roman Catholic press has challenged this selection of a site as a challenge to the Papacy in its own home. The Methodists reply with the statement that they have no intention of building upon that portion of the site which immediately overlooks the Vatican. Meanwhile the General Assembly of the President of the Catholic Associations of Rome has passed a motion denouncing the proposed building as "insulting to Catholism, to Italy, to the city of Rome, to history, and to art," and expressing the hope that the government and the Royal Commissioner of Rome will intervene. It seems that the grounds where the German Emperors of the Middle Ages pitched their tents will become the battleground of a new controversy. PLAN HOME NEAR L.A. FOR ADDICTS LOS ANGELES, July 17.—Plans for the erection on the rocky shores of San Clemente Island, 50 miles from Los Angeles, of a home for drug addicts, proposed by the American Narcotic Crusade as a means of caring for narcotic users who wish to escape from the clutches of the dope monster, have been revealed here. Mrs. Angela C. Kaufman, well-known social worker, and originator of the American Narcotic Crusade, is firm in her belief that such isolation would lessen by at least 75 per cent the drug addicts in the United States. The project will cost approximately $5,000,000, it is estimated. This sum, she said, will be raised through regular subscription. BERGER HALL AGRES "NICE GIRL" ONE WHO CAN BLUSH LONDON, July 17.—A nice girl, according to the Hon. Mrs. Claud Yorke, is one who is capable of that strange feat which is almost extinct as the capacity to blush. And it is still the nice girl, according to Mrs. Yorke, who is one of London's best known society women, who is the favorite with the men. It is about her that all the love stories have been written and to her that poets have sung their sweetest songs. Every era has its fashion in women said Mrs. Yorke, but none of us can remember any such curious fashion as has produced the women of today. What is that fashion? "As far as I can judge it is one in which everything is permitted except to be shocked. You may wear the most outrageous clothes; you may drink, smoke and use expression which would not even have been understood by one's grandmother, but so long as you are completely unmoved by any deeds or opinions, so long as you remain physically incapable of such a thing as a blush, you will be regarded, in some circles as amusing and up to date.
