of door events was the picnic and
gathering of relatives and very close
friends held yesterday at the Andrews
ranch, west of Garden Grove road,
Mrs. Alberta Andrews and her sister,
Mrs. Mary Doolin, extending their usual hearty welcome to the guests.
On the rear lawn under the huge pepper tree, two long tables were placed, each centered with a cheering bouquet of garden flowers. A nearby cooking stove gave convenience, although the kitchen range was pressed into service for the "hots" and coffee.
Complying with the urgent request that she not make elaborate preparation for the dinner, it was agreed that "hot dogs" would be the "piece de resistance," and with potato salad, baked beans, dill pickles, jellies and jams, a menu was enjoyed which tastes so good no place else, except it be the beach. The dessert course, luscious watermelons, was postponed until later in the afternoon, through appeal from the guests. A stone jar of ice cold lemon punch was an afternoon treat, also.
Piano numbers and vocal duets by the Misses McNulty, of Long Beach, with Vietrola music interspersed the visiting during the afternoon. DIES AFTER THREE DAYS' ILLNESS
Miss Electra Montague, 23, daughter of Rev. and Mrs. C. R. Montague of Fullerton, where Rev. Montague is pastor of the First Methodist church, died yesterday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock, after having been taken seriously ill Thursday. Miss Montague had been in poor health since having the influenza three and a half years ago, at which time she was a senior in the Tulare high school.
The body is being held at the McAulay funeral parlors, but will lie in state tomorrow from 10 a.m. till 2 p.m. at the chapel of the First Methodist church, where funeral services have been announced for 2 o'clock. Rev. C. M. Crist of Santa Ana officiating, assisted by Rev. John Oliver of Whittier, and Rev. Wm. A. Betts of Santa Ana. The church choir will furnish the music, it is announced. LOCAL YOUNGSTERS HAVE NEW PRIVILEGE
Anaheim kiddies are coming into their own. Miss Irene Jacques, instructress at the new city park, assisted by eight young ladies from Anaheim high school, is putting the youngsters through the paces of a score of supervised games, besides teaching them elements of handicraft, under the shelter built by the local Lions club.
Vard Hannum is having the slide, rock-a-bye swings and teeters put into place and soon circular rings and other playground devices will be installed by his department.
Boy Scouts will soon be instructed by County Executive Roland Dye to tidy up the grounds periodically, and this small folks' industry will then begin to hum on a business basis. Many parents do not realize that well-directed play hours in summer vacation, under such ideal conditions, make not only for the physical, but the mental and moral upbuilding of young children.
Under Marie Noll, president, and Grace Holdsworth, secretray, Elizabeth Schweinfest, Elaine Webb, Mary Alice White, Sarah Fay, Evelyn Cordes and Catherine Volz are assisting Miss Jacques. These young ladies are known as the "Spark-plugs," and it is no misnomer if their energy may be reckoned. "All kiddles welcome," is the slogan, and "the more the merrier." Hours: 1:30 to 5, and no charge.
This great summer supervised playground term is made possible by Anaheim Community Service.
Hareold Holdsworth will organize the youngsters' baseball league, at which a good start was made today at 1 o'clock. The teams will be pitted against each other, and the parents invited to see their prowess.
