DEMPSEY ADMITS WILLARD'S ABILITY
(By International News Service)
LOS ANGELES, July 11.—Jack Dempsey, champion heavyweight boxer, was back at his home today looking none the worse for wear after his tiff with Tommy Gibbons on July 4, and ready to discuss the battle on for tomorrow night between Jess Willard and Luis Firpo at Jersey City.
The champion refused to pick the winner of the Willard-Firpo match because both are contenders for his crown, but did make a few remarks about the fight.
"Eastern boxing experts, I am told, are picking Firpo to win from Willard," Dempsey said, "but, to me, if Firpo is to win he will have to beat Willard in the early rounds. The longer Jess battles with a fellow the better he gets. Willard is a pretty foxy old fighter."
"From my personal standpoint it would be better for Firpo to win. Everyone knows of my match with Willard and I think it is generally believed I can do it again, but lots of boxing fans point to Firpo as the man who can dethrone me. I hope both of them win."

SLUGGERS PREFER OWN REG'LER JOBS
ALBUQUERQUE, N. M., July 11.—Exorbitant purses for prize fights are unknown in the Southwest and the old-timers who wait about the present high cost of pugilistic entertainment can find their ideal in this section of the country.
Joe Rivers, once prominent in the fight game, has declined a match with Eddie Mack for the featherweight title of the Southwest because his boss can't spare him. Rivers is making $100 a month driving an ice wagon and cannot afford to give it up. Nick Sollito, Rivers' manager, wired the promoters that this is the busy season for his fighter and as ice wagon jobs are not to be had every day, he is forced to cancel the bout.

Both are mountains of muscle Both have trained hard and faithfully.

Willard will weigh about 242 pounds. Firpo tips the beam at 214.
Both fighters are confident.
"I never felt better in my life, and as for my fighting condition let my trainer talk," Willard said today.
"Jess will win—I'm saying that from my heart," Jack Skelly, Willard's trained, predicted. "Jess is smarter than ever before."
Willard loafed today. He will rest all day tomorrow, coming into New York for the weighing at 6 o'clock.
At Firpo's camp, the greatest optimism prevailed.

If Joas is able to knock the giant of Argentine out then he really is a superman. Joas is far past the fighters age and can not be as great and tagged as he once was so if he wins—well he is some man.
We understand that the reason one Jack Kearns is talking a Dempsey-Firpo match is that such a match is being forced on by the New York boxing commission. Dempsey has always said that he was willing to fight Wills but went right on ignoring the Black Panther's challenges. The New York commission believes in putting up or shutting up, Dempsey has failed to do either. Dempsey is not afraid of Wills but his slick toped manager has made demands of money guarantees that the promotors were unable to meet or to gamble with.
It has been Dempsey's fault that he has been idle so long. When he owes his demands he will findenty of entertainment. The N. Y. commission has made him or rather Jack Kearns come down to business.
Wednesday's match will be an interesting one. It is worth a whole lot just to see Bull in action.
Battling Siki landed just one punch in his fight with Marcel Nilles, but that was enough. Skii's punch came at the beginning of the second round and completely knocked the Franch heavyweight out. Nilles battered the Sengalese all about the ring in the first, only to fall victim to Siki's heavy artillery in the second. If Skii could be handled he would be a world's champion.
The Firpo-Willard match has the gamblers guessing. In the East Firpo is a slight favorite and the West gives Willard the preference. If the South American can keep away from Willard's heavy guns he will best the giant, but if Willard connects with his heavy artillery then Firpo is done for. Willard is still somewhat of an unknown quantity. We are not sure how far age has crept in on his abilities.
Even at that Jack Dempsey and his manager, Jack Kerns, are not hankering after a go with the man mountain. If they were fighters instead of fortune hunters they would fight the whole bunch, one at time, Firpo, Willard and Wills, and prove to the world that Dempsey is the champion of champions. Surely the gate receipts from the three fights would be much more than the gate from any one fight, no matter how it was steamed up. What's the use of having a champion if he will not fight?
William Tilden was defeated in the Illinois tennis championship tournament by Manuel Alonso of Spain. Tilden is the American title holder. Helen Wills had an easy time defeating all comers. It would appear that there is no one in America that can defeat the Berkeley girl at the present time. She is headed for the world's championship.

Presumably everybody interested in baseball has some curiosity as to what Bonsetter Reese does when he cures the sore or displaced muscles of the player. Ray French, the Brooklyn shortstop, tells quite graphically his experience in his recent trip to Youngstown. First of all an appointment had to be made, for the Bonsetter has a lot of "orders" booked ahead. That part being arranged French landed in Youngstown and made his way to the home of Reese, where he does his "operations."
Let French tell what happened thereafter.
"When I got to his home he was busy working on another customer and I waited with other patients in the parlor. After sitting around for about ten minutes, Reese entered the room. He had a long sheet of paper and after looking it over he asked if the Brooklyn ball player was present. I went forward and introduced myself. Then we headed for the workshop. He asked me what was the matter with me and I told him how I hurt myself.
"By this time we were in his office and he told me to sit down. I did so. He got a hold on my right arm and pressed my elbow with his knuckles. I do not know why he did this but he must have pressed the right spot as a pain shot up my arm and I even felt it in my head. I began to sweat and grit my teeth. He then pressed some on my shoulder muscles with his fingers, and believe me, he has plenty of strength in his fingers.
"Then the tough part of the operation followed. He is a fast worker and lost no time in getting to it. He rested one of his knees on my back, on the exact spot I had felt pain. Then he pressed violently on some ligament with his thumb. Boy, he sure did hurt for a minute. I gritted my teeth once more and the beads of sweat dropped off my brow. I heard something in my side move as if a ligament had been put in its proper place. Then he let go. He said I was all right and could play ball tomorrow.
"I stood up, and much to my surprise, I could raise my hand over my head without feeling any pain at all. I asked him how much and he said twenty dollars. Said it just like you would say five cents. I paid him; thanked him for his services and here I am ready to play whenever Manager Robinson says the word."
