BISHOP SAYS IRISH MAIDS IMMODEST DUBLIN, July 10.—There are not likely to be many poems written or songs sung in the future about the molesty and purity of the Irish maids unless the colleens men—their ways in the opinion of Rev. Dr. Hackett, Catholic Bishop of Waterford, in an address at Cournel. He asserted that the conduct of many Irish young women had come to be one of the blackest blots upon the country's escutcheon. The blame for this condition is placed by the Bishop upon the anti-government movement that has so upset the Emerald Isle. Up to now the purity of Irish maidens has been a thing in which every Irishman gloried. The whole continent has looked to Ireland as a moral nation. I am sorry to say that it is not true today. WOULD SLAY WIFE TICKLED BY UNCLE AKRON, Ohio, July 10.—Should a man decapitate his wife because her uncle flickles her in the ribs? Judge H. C. Spicer of Summit County Domestic Relations Court, recently answered this question by granting of a divorce to Mrs. Spongagle on grounds of extreme cruelty, in making threats for such a cause. Her name is Myrtle, and she married William in Whotmer, West Virginia in 1915. The rib tickling took place on her uncle's farm, where the couple were visiting. The uncle is 25 years old and good looking, which may have had weight with William. She said he "teased me" pulled my ears in a playful manner and gouged me in the ribs. IOWA PEEVED OVER WIFE DESERTIONS (By International News Service) DES MOINES, Iowa, July 10.—County Attorney Seeburger, aroused by the increasing prevalence of wife desertion in Polk County, plans a drive upon all wife deserters that is to end with the amendment of the state law against this class of offenders. The county has spent more than $32,000 in the last three years on returning deserters and prosecuting them. There have been 628 cases of wife desertion in the county recorded in that time here. One-fifth of all indictments returned by the grand jury are because of wife desertion charges. Seeburger states, and the enforcement of the present law is made even more difficult because of some wives repenting after their husbands are returned, resulting in withdrawal of their charges. Seeburger believes the number of wife desertions would be reduced if the law were amended to deprive these offenders of their freedom after putting up a support bond following conviction. LOUIS, Mo., July 10.—Dowr deep into the bowels of the earth, scientists for six institutions will delve for the next ten years in a research survey of Missouri to uncover data about prehistoric man believed to have roamed the wild prairies of the state centuries ago. The research party will explore the mounds, old Indian trails, quarries and village sites which the cloak of time has covered for innumerable years. Records show some valuable information about the race which inhabited the state long ago, but the survey is expected to unearth many rare specimens of their handiwork and more complete information about their habits and modes of living.
