Saturday, July 7, 1923 N-DURANCE ESSEX IN NOVEL TESTOUT After fourteen round trips from Los Angeles to Big Bear and return in 14 consecutive days, the N-Durance Essex is still running as well as ever. Charlie Holdson, (Endurance Charlie) declares that he is gaining weight and feeling better every day. The first four or five days of this worm-down test were the hardest for him to bear, but as soon as his muscles became accustomed to the constant swinging of the wheel, he settled down to what might be termed his "second wind." Mr. Holdson reports to R. W. Townsend, local Essex and Hudson dealer, that the roads are in good shape. Charlie is enthusiastic over them, having been used to more rough going than he encountered in the San Bernardino mountains. To the novice, however, the roads seem to go up and down as mucu as forward. Starting from San Bernardino at an elevation of 1100 feet above sea level the road quickly rises through Waterman Canyon to 4800 at the summit. A comparatively level stretch runs from the summit to Lake Arrowhead, where the barometer registers 5000 feet. From Arrowhead to Big Bear, several grades are encountered and low gear is necessary. It is harder to travel from Big Bear to Arrowhead than it is in the opposite direction, for the grades are steeper and the road is rough in spots, making traction difficult. From Big Bear to Redlands, the down trips again easier than the up trip. Dust is getting heavy on the sun-baked slopes of Clark's grade, and ceaseless travel keeps it stirred up. Chuckholes become filled with fine dust that flows like water, seeking its level and splashing when the car wheels hit it. This causes motorists who are not looking for this condition to get jolted unmercifully. No one need fear the trip who will use a few precautions: See that your brakes are in good shape before start; use the motor for all down grades; either second or low gear, according to the pitch; don't force your motor to "lug" on up-grades, the gears were made to use. Take your time blow your horn and keep Riley’s Studebaker Economy Run Winner Driven by Bill Payne of the Anaheim branch, Harry D. Riley's big six Studebaker touring car yesterday won first place to Fresno in the annual Studebaker economy run from Los Angeles to Huntington Lake in the High Sierra against a field covering all of So. Cal. Payne, carrying an observer from another distributor's garage, averaged more than 23 miles to the gallon of gas. Last year against the entire field of California, one of Riley's cars won third place. The contest embraced all distributors in California, the northern contingent also driving to Fresno on the first log of the trip. The entire crowd proceeded from Fresno to Huntington Lake. The distance from Los Angeles to Fresno is 265 miles. Only cars that had already traveled at least 50,000 nails could be entered. A. A. Annbroe was the observer on another car. Goodyear Tires, Tubes Down 3—14 Per Cent Tire price cuts have become general as forecast in these columns a week ago. Announcement is made by the officials of the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company of California that prices of Goodyear Passenger Car and Motorcycle Tires and Goodyear Tubes have been reduced from 3 per cent to 14 per cent, and is effective immediately. J. K. Hough, Manager of Tire Sales of the California Company, in speaking of this lowering of Goodyear prices, says, "The decrease in prices of Goodyear Tires and Tubes has again brought them back to pre-war levels, but the user of Goodyear today is getting three times as much service from the tires as he obtained before the war. "At that time, tires that would run 5,000 miles were indeed scarce and such a mileage record was more or less phenomenal. Today, however, 15,000 miles are not at all uncommon." Bevillard of the Anaheim Ignition Depot advises. While battery noises may be due to either A or B batteries, or both, it is the B batteries which are the principal offenders, for the reason that they are right in the phone circuit while A batteries are not, he declares. Because they are in the phone circuit, any disturbances caused by or within the B batteries immediately affect the vibrations of the phone diaphragm, producing a variety of harsh, discordant sounds. The intensity of this disagreeable effect, of course, is greatly increased when amplified, especially wherever loud-rpeaking apparatus is used. The battery disturbances which cause noise are set up in several ways, differing according to whether dry cells or storage batteries are used to supply the plate current. FULLERTON MAYOR BACKS POLICE CHIEF No sympathy was voiced for lawbreakers in the instructions of Mayor W. F. Coulter to Arthur Eells, Fullerton chief of police, yesterday when Mr. Coulter urged a more stringent enforcement of the traffic laws on the principal arteries of the city, particularly West Commonwealth and Chapman-aver, and Brea-rd. Coming on the heels of the recent outcry thru the C. of C., that the Fullerton police were so rigid in the enforcement of the law as to drive people from Fullerton, Mayor Coulter's instructions may be looked upon as significant. The mayor made no reference to the recent complaints against law enforcement, but pointed out that citizens timing autopsys found that many of them ran along Commonwealth ave. at a rate of speed in excess of 40 miles an hour, and he said that this must be stopped; even if it is found necessary to increase the personnel of the police force. The city, he said, is spending a great deal of money for good roads, and it is not any part of their purpose to permit motorists to make speedways of them. Neither is it any part of their purpose to permit overloaded trucks to break them up, but the campaign against them will be pushed with relentless vigor. The spirit of the instructions was approval of the announced policy of Marshal Eells on law enforcement. The mayor also gave instructions for the putting on duty of a traffic officer at Commonwealth ave and Spadra-rd. beginning Monday of next week. If a car is in proper trim the owner can't help be satisfied, and satisfied owners mean everything to the local distributors.
