THEORY BLASTED GENIUS PATHOLOGIC
(By International News Service)
OAKLAND, July 3—An attack on the Carnegie Foundation, the shattering of the Lombroso theory that genius is pathologic and the opening of a lively political battle for the presidency were the outstanding features of the opening session of the National Education Ass'n under way here today.
Will C. Wood, state superintendent of the California schools, defending educational progress, opened fire on utterances of Dr. Henry S. Prichett, president of the Carnegie Foundation, charging that Prickett "has always been undemocratic in his attitude toward public education."
"It would seem to me," Wood said, "that this congress should not adjourn without asking and answering the question 'what is a great foundation for?' Certainly it should not be an agency for shattering the educational ideal of America nor an instrument for destroying opportunity for American boys and girls."
Professor Lewis M. Terman, head of the department of psychology of Stanford University, revealing for the first time exhaustive tests of a quarter of a million children definitely shattered the theory that the "gifted" are sissified, shy, retiring and far from ordinary normal persons.
He declared that the investigation showed them to be normal, healthy persons with honors about evenly divided between boys and girls.
Miss Olive Jones of New York today was given the support of the entire New York delegation for the presidency, making her a formidable contender against Miss Mary Meikimon of Boston.
BREA, July 3.—(Spl.)—Miss Elizabeth Taylor and her sister from Gouma, Neb., Mrs. C. F. Stossen and two small children left Sunday for a week's visit with their uncle and aunt, A. P. Spring and wife on Johnson St. Arlington Heights, Los Angeles.
M. Chambers and wife were Long Beach visitors Saturday. They visited friends, Mrs. D. Talbot, and witnessed the C. E. Parade which certainly was a pretty sight.
Monday many young folk of the Christian church went to Los Angeles to attend the conference usually held each year at Santa Monica about 14 in all who will spend 10 days at the College C . O. C. A.
Mr. and Mrs. A. P. Spring from Los Angeles were Sunny dinner guests at his sisters home, Mrs. C. S. Taylor.
Mr. and Mrs. H. Senn and children were Newport Beach visitors on Saturday.
Mother Taylor is not feeling very well these days.
Little Bette Zerbe is suffering with a cold and Georgia Nickolet is able to be up and around again after an illness of a few weeks.
M. Chambers and wife made a visit over to West Coast Lease on Sunday afternoon to see friends.
Mrs. C. H. Keen is up latter a spell of pneumonia.
Mrs. Jack Golden spent a day with her sister and family in Whittier Friday.
Mr. and Mrs. Gentry and two children of Whittier were Brea visitors over the week end with the latter's sister, Mrs. J. Golden and husband.
Several Brea folk attended the baptismal services at the Fullerton Christian church Sunday afternoon, six were baptized, Rev. W. E. Spicer officiated.

YORBA LINDA
YORBA LINDA, July 3.—Mrs. J. A Small has been spending the past few days with her brother at Monrovia.
Mrs. Chas Payne delightfully entertained the local bridge club at her home on Saturday. Following the custom of the club, luncheon was served at one o'clock. Mrs. Payne used a color scheme of pink and lavender. The dozen guests were seated at three small tables, each table being centered with a basket of sweet peas in lavender and pink shades. Dainty crepe paper dolls in the same shades concealed the nut cups and the taly cards for the afternoon's amusement were hand painted sweet peas.
Prizes were won by Mrs. C. W. Miller, Mrs. Dr. Cochran and Mrs. S. W. Tutton.
Friends here of Mrs. Turner, mother of Roy Turner will be interested to learn of her marriage several weeks ago to a Mr. Ramus of Santa Fe Springs. The news leaked out Saturday when the couple visited friends in town. Mrs. Ramus resided about ten years on her ranch on Y. L. Boulevard but moved to Santa Fe Springs a year ago. The groom is employed by the Union Oil Company at that place. They have the wishes of a large number of friends for a happy wedded life.

EARRINGS PERSIST DESPIE SCIENCE BY Alice Langler
PARIS, July 3. The country of the dry regime is the country of bare ears," says Huguette Garnier in L'Excelsior, and the ears are not much barer than the regime is dry." Word has just reached France that the women across the Atlantic care being ordered, in the name of hygiene and the future of the race, to leave off wearing the "ornament of savage races." But one judges from the many tourists who are invading Paris at this moment that the campaign against earrings is not much more successful than the one against strong drink and wines.
"As long as there are fair women in the world they will prefer to hearken to the advice of their mirrors rathan than that of the most celebrated doctors." This is the opinion of Monsieur Revillon, one of the directors of the Maison Cartier, the most fashionable jeweler on the Rue de la Palix.
