AUTOMOBILE OF 26TH YEAR NO. 264. GOURT ACTION TO TEST ACT UNLIKELY Auto Club of So. Cal: Pooh. Poohs Reports—Okehs Speed Traps. Ridiculing the rumor of test cases to ascertain the validity of the provision in the Motor Vehicle Act that goes into effect September 1, practically eliminating "speed traps" from California highways—oy making testimony thus secured invalid, officials of the Auto Club of Southern California declare that the absence of the "speed trap" will not mean an avalanche of reckless driving. This provision of the new Motor Vehicle Act, as pointed out by the Auto Club, merely means that uniformed officers will patrol the highways "in the open" rather than spending their time hiding behind billboards, or smoking their pipes under culverts. While it is also pointed out that the motoring organizations of California did not directly introduce or advocate the introduction of the "no speed traps" "DIDN'T NOTICE SIGNS NO EXCUSE IN COURT One of the most frequent pleas made by motorists passing through small towns and getting arrested for speeding is—"Oh, I didn't see the sign giving the speed limit!" court officials declare. This business of reading the road signs is very essential to all motorists, whether they be traveling in California or coming across the continent to the west. Motoring organizations, notably the Auto Club of Southern California have spent millions of dollars in putting up road signs, not only guiding the motorist either and you, but also the legal speed limit limitations of the country. These signs are not put the fun of doing some out authorities. And, they are all placed in a ner and any plea of them or failure to see laughed at by municipalities. Ignorance of the road the same as ignorance say the courts, and if when you are saying ing" to the judge. CAR EXAMINATION PART OF SERVICE "Buick owners making trips to the government parks and mountain roads will find it is well to use the accommodation the Buick service department offers to them," says Art Steward of the Anaheim Auto Co. "We offer all Buick owners opportunity of having their car examined before starting on these trips. There is no charge for this service and it is for their benefit to use it. If there is anything wrong we will find it and if it is serious we will tell you. We also will tell you what the cost will be to put it right. BUSINESS BOOK IN TIRES, SALES The decline in tire priced boom business, according Mendora of the Reliable firm has done a business size of the normal This provision of the new Motor Vehicle Act, as pointed out by the A.M. Club, merely means that uniformed officers will patrol highways "in the open" rather than spending their time hiding behind bill-boards, or smoking their pipes under culverts. While it is also pointed out that the motoring organizations of California did not directly introduce or advocate the introduction of the "no speed-traps" provision of the new act, they have concurred in the general belief that such a provision would work out for the betterment of all conditions concerned. "Pickpockets and other minor offenders would not be stopped in their criminal progress if it were not for the uniformed patrolmen who is within call of their victims. If the patrolman were hiding behind a billboard somewhere he would not be of much service to throw the fear of the law into criminals at large", the club officials say. No parallel is drawn between the law-avading motorists and pick-pockets, but the inference is that in the case of the law-breakers, the strong arm of the law should be in evidence so as to be available, not only in the case of accident, but also in case of reckless driving, which may take place outside any limited area included in a speed trap. 19 CARS SO FAR IN JONE, WALTER SALES Nine Jordans, five Willys-Knights and five Overlands have been sold so far this month by the J. These signs are not put up just for the fun of doing something, point out authorities. And, furthermore, they are all placed in a regular manner and any plea of ignorance of them or failure to see them is now laughed at by municipal courts. The firm has done a business three times the size of the normal volume of the SALES OF DODGES BREAKING RECORDS Since Jan. 11, Dodge Brothers dealers have consistently broken all previous records for delivery of cars to customers. Since April 1, deliveries to customers have averaged more than 5000 cars per week. This is without taking into account sales in foreign countries. Materially increased production in 1923 has made this performance possible. The figures reached Charley Mann this week. For the first quarter in 1923 retail deliveries to customers were in excess of any quarter in the history of the business—even including the peak periods of 1918-1920. Following this, deliveries for April exceeded any previous month of the first quarter and delivery figures for each week in April exceeded the totals of the preceding week—each week creating a new high record. May maintained the pace established in April. June should be better than May. Dodge Brothers are able to compile this sales information because of the co-operation of each of their dealers throughout the entire United States and Canada in sending a weekly report of all retail deliveries made to customers. Through these reports they have an accurate, detailed record of exact conditions existing in each sales territory. Their calculations are based upon the number of cars actually consumed by the public, as they believe this to be the only true indication of conditions. The constantly climbing delivery records coupled with increasing production, lead Dodge Brothers to believe that the last six months of 1923 added to the record breaking first Conveyance And Power Show, Plan With much of the power equipment to be exhibited in the National Power and Transportation Show, which will open on grounds on Wilshire Boulevard, just west of Roberts Airport and across the street from Carthay Center in Los Angeles, coming from distant points, strenuous activities are now marking efforts of the committee in charge to get everything in readiness for the opening on July 15. Already a large number of exhibits have arrived and are being put in condition for the show. Other exhibits are all on the way; and delivery has been promised in sample time to allow for all tests to be made before the show opens. The program for the show includes certain days set aside for special demonstrations in various lines or work. Road building is coming in for a large share of attention and the engineers in charge of the road building equipment promise many new wrinkles in the art of constructive highways. Prominent highway engineers will be in attendance on Road Builders' Day to pass on the quality of the work done by the Fordson tractor and the equipment which will be used with it in making sample portions of various types of roads. The firm has done a business three times the size of the normal volume of the past few months. Para-Bell tires have been in particular demand, but Apex and Manhattan tires also have sold well. The most varied assortment of used tires is found at any shop in the city is available, says Mendoza. The constantly climbing delivery records coupled with increasing production, lead Dodge Brothers to believe that the last six months of 1923 added to the record breaking first six months will total by for the greatest year in the history of their business. The week-end witnesses no essential change in the tire and tube situation, except that one prominent concern, it is reported, will go out of business, and a temporary cut all around of 10 per cent is anticipated. While three of the "Big Five" Firestone, Goodrich and Goodyear have reduced, the other two, United States and Fisk are holding firm. The United States is the biggest of them all. The independents large and small which have cast their lot with Firestone are all expected to cut if they haven't done so already. The Converse, according to F. S. Dunlop of the Nu-Way Tire Co., has not yet cut and announces it will not do so. The Norwalk will meet the lower price levels until further notice. YEAR TO ESTABLISH NEW SALES RECORDS The Automobile Salesmen's Club of Orange County, at its Thursday luncheon in the Elks' Clubhouse, displayed a good deal of enthusiasm over the way in which business has been going so far this year, and predictions were general that 1923 would be the best sales year in the history of the county. As one of the officers remarked to the writer after the meeting, Orange County repeatedly has made a better sales record even than San Diego or Fresno. Great trading balances may be maintained in the cities; but much of the wealth on which purchases are made lies outside the sphere of city influence. Sales in 1923 of new motor vehicles, parts and supplies The Automobile Salesmen's Club of Orange County, at its Thursday luncheon in the Elks' Clubhouse, displayed a good deal of enthusiasm over the way in which business has been going so far this year, and predictions were general that 1923 would be the best sales year in the history of the county. As one of the officers remarked to the writer after the meeting, Orange County repeatedly has made a better sales record even than San Diego or Fresno. Counties, which have much larger population, San Diego topped Orange during May., but that was an exception, and the two counties practically were neck and neck. Salesmen's problems were discussed at some length. The by-laws of the club provide that repeated reports of discourtesy toward a prospect on the part of a member while at work will make him liable to expulsion from the club. NORWALKS GO 20,000 MILES ON 35 POUNDS The Nu-Way Tire Co. has put on exhibition a pair of Norwalk 32x4 tires which have been driven 20,000 miles on 35 pounds of air and look good for 10,000 more. The tires are shown to illustrate the fact that the body wall of the Norwalk is so constructed that underinflation does no harm. The tires were used by a Los Angeles salesman on his rounds. It is in this outlying market that the next big sales campaign will be staged. Sales in 1923 of new motor vehicles, parts and supplies, and service labor will be nearly six billion dollars, a sum greater by 50 per cent than the value of all gold and silver coin within the nation's borders. This total will be made up as follows: Retail Sales in 1923 Motor Vehicles ..... $2,091,000,000 Replacement Parts, Accessories and Service Supplies ..... $85,000,000 Operating Supplies ..... 2,102,000,000 Service Labor ..... 900,000,000 Total ..... $5,978,000,000 If we except essential food products, the automobile industry in all its ramifications can well be considered America's greatest market. The registration of automobiles is one of the best indications of the extent of the market for automotive products. Records compiled at the end of 1922 showed that 10,795,000 passenger cars were in operation in the United States at that time.
