STAGE ALL SET FOR MONROE EXPOSITION LOS ANGELES, June 26.—The stage is set for Los Angeles' greatest production—the American Historical Revue and Motion Picture Exposition. Opening next Monday, July 2, the centennial celebration of President Monroe's signing of the famous document by his own name, will continue for five weeks, concluding Aug. 4. To date, more than $1,000,000 has been expended to insure the success of the enterprise, and exhibits from practically every section of the state have found places in the "Aztec City" that has sprung up at Exposition Park grounds. The greatest of interest is being shown in this memorable celebration because the motion picture world has joined hand toward making it the success that it promises to be. Every notable film star in Hollywood, Los Angeles, Universal City and Culver City will spend allotted time at the Exposition, and give the populace "a first hand glance" at them. Filmdom's own presentation, "The Locaton", showing the birth, growth and present stage of their industry, will be one of the outstanding features of the Exposition. Completion of the exterior of the Exposition grounds has entailed months of work on the part of landscape architects and a corps of more than 100 gardeners. Tropical and semi-tropical plants by the thousands have been imported from South and Central American countries, which have turned the grounds into a veritable flower garden. With the unique type of building surrounded by tropical plants in full bloom, caecus century plants, yuccas and Amor ferns, no prettier setting has ever been conceived in this district even by motion picture geniuses. With the puleo-type of building surrounded by tropical plants in full bloom, caecis century plants, yuccas and Amon ferns, no prettier setting has ever been conceived in this district even by motion picture geniuses. Chief among the scores of entertainment features will be the tableaux and pageants staged under the supervision of the World Amusement Service Association and the tremendous fireworks spectacles to be produced by Thearle-Diffield Company. Theodore Kosloff, noted Russian dancer, will present three historical ballets, portraying characteristic dances of all nations. Emile de Recat, formost producer of pageants, has been secured by the association to stage historical pageants on a larger scale than ever attempted in this state before. For three months de Recat has been putting his troop through rehearsals. These pageants will include the portrayals of many significant historical events. Leading roles in these presentations will be taken by popular film stars. "Monetums, or the Last Days of the Aztec" is the title of one of the stipendus Thearle-Duffield pyrotechnic spectacles in which tons fireworks will be used. The invasion and overthrow of the Imperial Aztec capitol by Hernando Cortez and his adventurous Spanish conquerors, will be graphically depicted in this educational and awe-inspiring production. These pageants and fireworks acts will be presented in Los Angeles' new million dollar Coliseum, which seats 80,000 persons. A huge stage, 100 by 130 feet in size, has been erected in the center of the stadium for these inspiring and thrilling offerings. Aside from the county exhibits, some of which have been in the process of preparation for some months, leading manufacturers of the state and nation will present for display their various products. The sanction of President Harding necessary in the minting of 380,000 Monroe Doctrine centennial half dollar pieces, shows that the Exposition has received the applause of official Washington. S. P. Wages Campaign to Reduce A four months campaign to reduce accidents to motorists at grade crossings has just been inaugurated by the So. Pac., in cooperation with the American Railway Ass'n. Hundreds of thousands of posters and other advertising matter is being distributed and displayed in conspicuous places where it will come to the attention of drivers of automobiles and other vehicles. FILL VACANCIES DURING VACATION SACREMENTO. June 26.—With approximately 100 state appointments at his command, Governor Richardson will celebrate termination of the bill signing period by going actively to work at filling existing vacancies in the state offices. Preparatory to entering the appointing period, the governor will in the near future establish his "summer capitol" at Long Beach. When he leaves for the Southern city, Governor Richardson will carry with him a list prepared by the State Board of Control showing all state positions which are either vacant or at "the pleasure of the governor." Wages Campaign to Reduce A four months campaign to reduce accidents and other advertising matter is being distributed and displayed in conspicuous places where it will come to the attention of drivers of automobiles and other vehicles. "The number of accidents to motorists at grade crossings is appalling," said R. J. Claney, in change of safety work for the Southern Pacific Company. "This campaign is similar to the campaigns held in the past few years which resulted in a decrease of accidents at grade crossings. The Southern Pacific Company is working energetically to reduce this deplorable toll of life and property caused chiefly by careless motorists trying to beat trains to crossings." During the five years ending Dec. 31, there were 3708 accidents to motorists at grade crossings on the Southern Pacific System. During this period, 261 people were killed and 122 injured in grade crossing accidents. An idea of the carelessness of motorists is shown by the fact that in this five year period 1807 machines ran on track in front of train, 906 ran into side of train, 448 stalled directly in front of train, 119 skidded into side of train, 283 ran into crossing gates, and 28 ran into crossing flagmen attempting to warn them of approaching trains. Two of the flagmen were killed and 23 injured.
