26TH YEAR NO. 258. 554 CARS, 46 TRUCKS IN MAY Sales in Orange co. Still Heavy; San Diego In Second Place. Five hundred and fifty-four new passenger cars and 46 trucks sold in Orange county were registered during May, the complication of a well known Los Angeles publication which reached Anaheim yesterday shows. Contrary to the rule, Orange County stood third among the Southern Counties instead of second, San Diego nosing Orange out by a few cars. Vehicles registered from Orange County included 46 trucks, against 39 in May of last year. This brings the total trucks sold and registered up to June 1 this year to 215. The total number of passenger cars to the MEDBERY RETIRES FROM CORPORATION Fred N. Medbery has withdrawn from Townsend & Medbery, Inc., and the firm now is K. W. Townsend, Inc. Medbery has not yet announced his plans for the future. "Red Bird" Demand Far Exceeds Supply The hit the new Red Bird has made on the Pacific Coast since its introduction to the far West a month ago is evidenced by orders for the new member of the Willys-Overland line being far greater than can at present be supplied. The J. E. Walter Co., Anaheim distributor, already has sold many of the cars. At the branches and agencies there is constant inquiry from purchasers for news as to Red Bird shipments. In answer to them, General Manager Culver, of the Willys-Overland Pacific Company, can say that while cross continent shipments are already in considerable numbers the Toledo factory has had sped production to meet an even quicker and bigger demand for the new cars than had been expected. In fact it looks as though Red Bird production would have to be jumped 5,000 a month from July on. In designing the Red Bird to fill a new niche in the Industry, Willys Overland engineers have done themselves proud in anticipating the need of the motorists, who seek distinction without excessive extravagance. LATEST IN RADIO RADIOLA IV, CLAIM In the radiola IV the very latest in "radiography" has been reached, says Robert Jensen, local distributor, who has put some of the new machines on exhibition at his shop, 242 East Center street. Since the country discovered in radio broadcasting an everchanging source of amusement, education and pleasure, there has been a demand from those who take pride in the beauty of their homes for a complete receiver, compact in size and entirely self-contained, at the same time handsome enough in appearance to grace and add to any music or living room," says Jensen, quoting a statement of the manufacturers. "Radiola IV meets this demand completely. Calif. Reports have been frequent this spring of campers becoming lost in the hills and mountains, and when found are nearly exhausted from starvation and fright. One thing you should take with you on this trip is a compass, and another thing is a knowledge of how to use it. But when you pack up the compass, you should also pack up a large portion of common sense and determination not to become panic stricken. "Panic" is a very bad travelling companion for a vacation party, say the Auto Club authorities. Repairs have been received by supervisors of the National Forest. Reserves to the effect that motoring parties and hikers who are very familiar with their surroundings have become lost almost at their own back doors, and so familiarity with your mountains is not always a preventative of panic. Mechanics appear more than pleased with the results achieved from its use. Pitrons, pins, valves, bearings etc. have been selling rapidly. Replacements of standard make are in heavy demand from car owners in preparation for summer trips. BEWARE OF THAT FOG ON YOUR TRIP Be careful in the fog. A great many accidents have been reported recently which have taken place during foggy weather, and in order to protect the welfare of the motoring public in this part of the state, officials of the Auto Club of So. Cal. warn motorists to drive carefully during foggy weather. Fog makes the roads and bridges slippery, as well as rain, or even worse. Also, it is difficult to see a car which may be standing at the side of the road, as red tail-lights are not visible for any great distance during "heavy" weather. Five speakers of national reputation, according to an announcement this week, will address the members of the National Association of Automobile Dealers at the Pacific coast district meetings, which are scheduled as follows: Los Angeles, June 18; San Francisco, June 21; Portland, June 25; Olympia, June 29. The program at each meeting will be identical. John Sherman Knox will talk on "Salesmen, who know how to get the money." He is probably more sought after than any other speaker on salesmanship. Knox was a feature of the program for the annual convention of the National Association in Chicago in January this year. The N. A. D. A. spends considerable money to get Mr. Knox for the several weeks that is necessary for him to devote to lecturing in these meetings, travelling to and from Cleveland solely for these conventions. He is president of a school for salesmen and a writer of considerable note on Salesmanship topics. "Since the war we have had so many fellows who haven't had to fight—no conviction, no necessity to think, study or work. They have laid down on the job, and the biggest job that sales managers have had has been to arouse and inspire them, put some fighting determination in them, see that they work." says Knox. In addition to Knox and C. C. G. Peckham, president of the N. A. D. A., who will call the convention to order; and C. A. Vane, general manager, who will discuss "Automobile Dealer Profits. What They Are. Where They Go," the other topics and speakers will be: (Continued on Page Three) Buick is a Happy Gift Being the very spirit of youth in the sparkling quality of design and in its beauty, this Buick under sport roadster has won the hearts of young everywhere.
