Finding Facts About Concrete
Science has stepped in to take out the guesswork in the strength of concrete. Engineers of Underwriters' Laboratories in Chicago have installed a machine (shown in the picture) which is capable of exerting a gradual pressure upon a block of concrete up to 200,000 pounds. At some point within that maximum the concrete block in the machine will crumble. The man at the right will be able to tell how many pounds of pressure it took to crush the block and the man at the left can observe how the block acts under pressure. Together they can make an accurate report upon the strength of the material. The engineers' researches in this branch of the Laboratories' work are contributing information valuable to the construction industry and the public by removing doubt about the safety factors of this and other building materials used in fire-resistant construction. Their work and that of other departments of the Laboratories is described and illustrated in a new volume, "A Symbol of Safety," just issued, from which the picture is taken by permission of publisher.

RICHARDSON SIGNS CONSERVATION BILLS
Now that Governor Richardson has signed Assembly Bill No. 188 calling for an appropriation of $5,000 to be used for the extension and care of the fire protective system on the San Bernardino mountains, an equal amount will be available from the Federal Forest Service which insures keeping the fire lanes and trails in good condition during the next two years.
This is particularly important in view of the fact that the number of summer visitors to these mountains is increasing year by year and the value of the water to the people of San Bernardino, Orange and Riverside counties is also becoming greater as these counties fill up with people, and there is greater call for domestic and irrigation water.
As the Governor has also signed Assembly Bill No. 3$0 making an appropriation of $20,000 for co-operation with the United States Geological Survey in keeping up the stream gauging in Southern California the work will be carried on as heretofore. This is a particularly important matter as the continuity of these streams flow measurements are very necessary if the records are to be of value, as determining the amount of water available for different uses. As these records are kept by the United States Geological Survey, being a disinterested competent agency, they are more valuable for all purposes than of kept by any other organization.
The signing of these bills by Governor Richardson demonstrates that he is thoroughly familiar with the conditions existing in our local watershed and that he is willing to have the state co-operate substantially in the conservation of water so necessary for the welfare of all Southern California.
These bills were sponsored and advocated by the Trio Counties Reforestation Committee and Chairman Francis Cuttle spent several weeks in Sacramento in the interest of these and other bills.
The former bill was introduced by Hon. Chester M. Eden and Senator Swing, as well as by all of the assemblymen from the three counties took an active interest in securing the passage of these bills, and all interested parties felt.

Correct this sentence: "I really meant to go to church with you today," said the husband, "but I'm not feeling well and I need a rest."
Americans may know little about European politics, but there isn't a European politician who can name our leading hitter.
The normal conscience is one that has sufficient tact to keep its mouth shut until after you take the profit.
Miss Blossom Martin and Eulogia Lozade.
That her refusal to marry him because of his poverty caused him to strangle Miss Blossom Martin, New York secretary, is the plea of Eulogia Lozade, Filipino lover. Miss Martin was employed as secretary and nurse in the home of a New York doctor. Lozade served as "handy man" about the house. He was seized by police when he attempted to drop overboard from a ferry the body of Miss Martin, which he had wrapped in paper and carried about the city for hours.
Don't blame the graduate for the nonsence in his address. Very likely some smart relative wrote it for him.
