NO DEMPSEY-WILLS BOUT-IN PROSPECT BY DAVIS J. WALSH (1. N. A. Staff Correspondent) NEW YORK, June 7.—In spite of fevered statements to the contrary, there will be no Dempsey-Wills bout on Labor Day or any other. That much is dawn in the books in red ink. The New York state Athletic Commission, under the jurisdiction of which the tout must be conducted, policy ignored the issue yesterday and will continue to ignore it until the annual flurry over the affair is a natural death from malnutrition. The commission's policy, dictated from sources not to be mentioned, is one of watchful waiting. It knows the enterprise must be conducted during the present outdoor season, if at all. It knows promoters must have ample time in which to perpare for the fight. It knows it will be criticized alike if it sanctions or forbids the bout. And knowing all these things, it wisely does nothing. The Dempsey-Wills match will never take place because opposition to it has concentrated, not only among the reformers, but also among many influential factors under one banner. Tom O'Rourke, the promotor, has informed the writer that he is certain the bout can go on but Thomas has a frayed cuff in the family closet. The thing is as dead as last week's cabbage. Wills is the victim of several misfortunes, paramount among which is the fact that he happened to be born decided brunette. This prevented him from getting the Dempsey engagement while he, Wills, was in his prime. It will continue to do so, even to the fact might be established that the negro has no chance to win. COURTHOUSE NEWS Final divorce was granted today to Thaddeus E. Lovett from Ellen May Lovett by Superior Judge R. Y. Williams. General denial, including denial that he threatened to kill her is made by E. L. Eckley in an answer to Effie Eckley's suit for divorce filed today. The two separated on April 14. There is property valued at approximately $28,000. William Crocker Budrow left an estate of $24,068, according to the inventory and appraisement filed today. Ninety-eight new cases received county aid during May, according to the monthly report of W. S. Gregg county aid commissioner. Of these, 55 were in the first district alone. Of a total of 297 now receiving help, 94 were children. Warrants approved totaled $2,531.28. ATTorney General Webb told the convention that a recent court decision compelled them to continue their work without an increase in help despite increased volume of work and urged them to do the best they could despite this handleup. The average citizen was credited with a large share of the responsibility for the growth of crime by speakers at the opening session of the convention. "So-called 'good citizens' who dodge jury service and leave that important work to professional hangers" declared Henry W. McGowen of Glenn county, "are doing all they can to encourage criminals. Sentimental persons who howl for convictions and then ask for pardons for notorious criminals are literally inviting these offenders to repeat their misdeeds." MAY STOP JULY FOURTH BATTLE (By International News Service) HELENA, Mont., June 7—There will be no world's heavyweight championship contest between Jack Dempsey and Tommy Gibbons, July 4, at Shelby, Mont., unless authorities of that city instigate a cleanup that will rid the town of all undesirables, declared Attorney General Rankin here this morning. Reports that Shelby was filling up with alleged plus-giles, pick-pockets, rum-runners and riff-raff of the underworld of the larger cities is said to be responsible for Attorney General Rankin's action. His message, a "hard boiled" one, issued this morning, reads in part: "Shelby shall not be the rendez-vous of thugs, yeggs, plus-giles, pick-pockets, gamblers, rum-runners or any other class of anarchists who make their living by defying the law and the constitution. Therefore, if the local authorities at Shelby continue to indicate that they are either unable or unwilling to enforce the law, there shall be no match between Dempsey and Gibbons, thereon." Tagging All the Bases The Glants culled three very lonely hits from the delivery of Vic Aldridge and finished second to the Cubs, 6 to 1. Snyder's home run in the eighth saved the Glants from a shutout. Dutch Reuther collapsed like an operat hat as the Pirates amassed six runs in the sixth and coasted home in front of the Dodgers 7 to 3. The alleged pitching staff of the Red Sox was manhandled for 16 hits, the Indians winning 17 to 4. Connolly got a home run with the bases filled in the fourth. Walter Johnson burned up the Tigers with his speed and pitched the Senators to a 5 to 1 decision, holding the Cobb entry five hits. INTERESTING POSE OF ITALY'S HERO Premier Mussolini in formal dress. That Benito Mussolini, Italy's fascist premier, can wear a "soap and fish" as fetchingly as the black shirt regalia of the fascist is indicated by this photo, one of the latest taken of the Italian "man of the house." Steuping out of character for the time being, the Phillies carried the Carda to 12 innings but finally lost 7 to 6, on Bottmley's triple and Myers' sacrifice fly.
