FURNISHINGS BOUGHT ENTIRELY HERE FOR FIVE APARTMENTS. After looking about elsewhere, P. M. Edwards, owner of what have been described as the finest apartments in Anaheim at Janss and West Connors, decided to purchase all the equipment and furniture from Anaheim concern. Edwards for 15 years had a store in Grand Junction, Coloas and before it was connected with Denver. He speaks with experience therefore, when he declares that the small town store, owing principally to much lower overhead, can compete on better than equal time with the large city store. The responsibility of the local store also is greater to its patrons. Edwards' apartments, four three-room and four four-room, are furnished throutly by the Stroup-Barnes Furniture Co. William Falkenstein provided the linen, curtains and draperies; modern Gas Appliances; gas fixtures; the Anaheim Electric Co. electric fixtures4 H. N. White and Edward Akswede, cooking utensils and dishes; the Gibson Lumber Co., lumber; while Cleary was the painter, Cohn the plumber, Orange-co Roofing Co., the roofer and Kidd the plasterer. There are four garages and in the same combined building in the rear there are wash-rooms for use by all the tenants alike. These apartments, by the way, contain features which make them a delight to the housewife, things like a built-in dresser in combined dressing room closets that are of wonderful practical convenience. Edwards says they represent the experience not only of years past, but acquired in an investigation of apartments in many cities of the Southland. When in need advertise in the Plain Dealer. BUT FOR ELECTRICITY YOU’D NEED 30 SLAVES The interesting announcement made by the Smithsonian Institute of Washington, D. C., that if the service rendered these days by electricity and steam for citizens of the United States was performed entirely by hand power, it would require 30 slaves for every person in the country. 10 USES FOR ELECTRIC BAN System uses for an electric Jan's That's the number thus far discovered. The list starts with the function of drying frosting onakes. It includes with that of creating a door for the furnace. Keeping cool and keeping warm are, of course included. Sounds paradoxical, but instead it's actual. PRACTICAL COMFORT READILY OBTAINED Builders of homes need not find it difficult to produce houses which will always be delightful pieces in which to live because of their practical comfort. In these days, dwellings which are not merely shellers but resting places, not merely showy houses but pleasant homes, with work made as light as possible of those traits of mind an spirit that alone produce happiness, are more easily attainable than was ever before the ease in human history. The explanation, of course, is electricity. The house that is adequately wired at the time it is built, is the house that is especially potential as to comfort, attractiveness and ultimately happiness. It has been said that love in a home means a happy home, whatever the material circumstances. Let no one deny the intuition of the poetical mind which expressed that thought. But let no one deny, either, that the twentieth century places a much-felt strain upon that sort of love; a strain which electricity helps immensely to relieve. Electric lights are not the whole story by any means. There is also needed a generous number of electric service outlets, in walls, and floors, to which a multitude of home electrical appliances can be connected—everything from electric clothes washer down to the electric toaster. B. F. Spencer PHONE 27 DOES YOUR HUBBY USE A QUILL PEN? You laugh at such an absurd question, and yet his grandfather used one. Times have progressed, that is true, but if the quill pen was good enough for your husband's grandfather why is it not good enough for your husband? Do you not still keep house pretty much in the same manner as your grandmother did? Don't you scaly your bands in the steaming dishwater? Don't you toughen and callous your hands and fill your jungles with dust by using a broom? Don't you walk from the stove to the ironing board and from the ironing board back to the stove to keep your iron hot? Don't you do the many, many household drudgery in very much the same manner as your grandmother did? The science of housekeeping has advanced fully as rapidly as the science of business and industry. Have you kept pace with it? You want your husband to be a success. To do so he must be up-to-the-minute in his methods. Are you keeping his home modern, or must he go forth from the dust of a home of yesterday into the glare of the business world of today and be blinded by its brilliancy? And you not only owe it to your husband—you owe it to yourself to keep up-to-date. The old methods were the ways of drudgery and toil; the ways of coarsened hands, aching backs, tired feet. The new methods are the ways of speed, ease and efficiency; the new way means a cleaner, more neatly kept home, and a healthier, happier wife. The modern way to keep house is the electric way. It is the quick way, the simple way, the healthy way, and the efficient way. Electrical appliances will perform all the necessary drudgeries and will besides, convienently do many of the little duties about the house. They will give you time for shopping, time for indulgence in the many pleasures women love, and time for giving to your home that extra care and those added touches of individuality that make it truly attractive. And, as the days of worn-out housewives have passed, so have the days of climbing upon chairs to attach appliances to a lightsocket. Today there is the electrical convenience. HEALTHY HEAT FOR HEALTH IN HOMES Before resigning yourself to the heat of the summer take one backward glance into the cold, wet days last winter and remember your resolution to be fully prepared for the next cold, rainy season. How do you plan to prepare? Are you going to go about it the same way you have for years past, or are you going to catch up with the march of progress and take advantage of the scientific developments which mean healthier heat, more easily obtained and more evenly maintained? You can now snap a swish and have electric heat with the same ease and expediency as you light your lights, and the efficiency of this modern means of heating as compared with the old method stands out fully as remarkably as the light outshines gas or coal-oil illumination. Remember, there is no great difference between qualities as between quantities of heat. Some forms of heating are so injurious that our constitutions have a harder time throwing off their ill effects than they would those of the cold weather. Electrical heat is the healthiest artificial heat which science has yet discovered. The average middle-aged woman will tell the bride-to-be that her life is before her; but that she must be prepared to meet the hardships as well as the happiness, to share the sorrows as well as the smiles. Looking back into the early years of her own married life she recalls the hysterical gladness and the romance which at first loaned strength for the performance of the duties of "getting settled" then she relives her realization that love doesn't darn socks, wash dishes or cook meals, and finally she hastens through the years when household tasks were struggle through, sick or well, with the growing feeling that life is a cold hard proposition in which today's problems must be met today or they will be magnified fourfold tomorrow. She will usually admit, though, that these last few years she has somewhat systematized things so that she has had considerably more time of late to enjoy the many pleasures for which she has always longed. Little does the average middle-aged woman realize that these last few years she has somewhat systematized things so that she has had considerably more time of late to enjoy the many pleasures for which she has always longed. CHINA MAY FACE NEW COMPLICATIONS (By International News Service) PEKING, June 4 — The Chinese government may be faced with an international complication as result of the attack of Japan guards at the treaty port of Changsha by a mob. The Japanese guards are reported to have fired on the mob in a defense when hard pressed. Chanzha has long been a seat anti-foreign feeling and the attack on the Japanese blue jackets is believed here to be a result of an foreign propaganda and the boycott movement against the Japanese. TONG WAR THREAT (By International News Service) LOS ANGELES, June 4 — Politically stepped in today to break up what promised to be a tong war after a excited Chinman appeared at Central Station and asserted he had been attacked by members of an oppressive faction. A cordon of officers were immediately thrown about the seattle where the Chinman said he had been attacked. Several members of the Hop King tongs were reported to have been preparing for war. Three Chinese were taken into custody. They were George Yourn and Wang Wah King, both of Seattle and Joe Loy Mook, of Seattle. All three were well armed; the officers said, and were scouring for Bing Kong members. to depend on assistance and special execution, of her housework upon that silent and efficient jack-of-trades Electricity. And the most extensive her employment of this "servant," the more time she has for recreation and the better health for the enjoyment of her pleasures. And there in lies a thought! One might almost say a miracle! When the problem arises—"What shall we give as a wedding gift?" What could be more appropriate than something carrying into the newly-made home an element of comfort and happiness; an assurance of better health and less tiresome effort! In other words why not give the modern bridge modern gift for her home, a gift combining all the desirable features—Beauty, Utility, Durability and that little tinge of Luxury that Electrical appliances will perform all the necessary drudgeries and will besides, conveniently do many of the little duties about the house. They will give you time for shopping, time for indulgence in the many pleasures women love, and time for giving to your home that extra care and those added touches of individuality that make it truly attractive. And, as the days of worn-out housewives have passed, so have the days of climbing up chairs to attach appliances to a lightsocket. Today there is the electrical convenience outlet which is all that its name implies. Its convenience lies in the fact that you can have one put wherever you find that you frequently use electrical appliances. These convenience outlet resemble the small brass plates which surround your electric light buttons, and in a similar manner, they fit into the wall baseboard or floor. When you desire to use an electric appliance you just attach the cord to the nearest convenience outlet and your appliance is ready for use—no light need to be removed and no unsightly cord is hanging from the chandlers. This is the modern, healthy way to keep house, and is in keeping with the progressive business methods of your husband. Your happiness and his happiness depend upon your health and the maintaining of your interest in life that is going on about you. Household drudger is powerful. It envelopes and empowers. One of the publications devoted to the interests of woman estimates that it takes 800 hours work per year. By careful test and observation it has been ascertained that the average time required for washing the dishes is 40 minutes. This, it is pointed out, is equivalent to the work of one person working steadily eight hours a day for three months a "Employ a servant to do all this, and you will have to pay at least $12 a week and 'keep', which includes food, room, washing and incidentals, and amounts to $8 per week at the lowest", it says. "Her time will cost at least 25 cents per hour. At this rate the 800 hours of dishwashing by a servant will cost $200 during the year. A pretty price for a distasteful job! And the housewife's time is worth so much more that if she does it herself, we must consider the dishwashing hand an even more expensive item. The electrical dishwasher do away with the annoyance, saves time otherwise given to this task and washes the dishes at a very unaoperating expense. Moreover in sanitary sense it is a very decide improvement over the dishpan method.
