LYCEUM: WILL QUIT FIRST BEACH WELL By Ellwood J. Munger The Lyceum, Oil Co. is making preparations to abandon the first well it has drilled in the Long Beach field... At 5000 feet the Lyceum ran into a salt-water zone and the outlook did not appear very promising. It is understood that this well's only showing was a slight one at 4475. The Prudential Petroleum Co. has "killed" its No. 1A and will carry it on to the deep sand. At 2789 the well on a production test made 400 barrels. The Prudential well is being drilled by the United Oil Co. The Regina Petroleum Co.'s well located on the northwest side of the field and across American-ave is taking on the appearances necessary for an oil well. The drilling has passed the 4700 foot mark and it is understood that the well has had some 175 feet of oil sand, enough to make a commercial producer. It takes a 5 or 16 thousand barrel well to create interest at all at Santa Fe Springs the wonder high gravity oil field of the world. It used to be a two or three thousand barrel well was considered a fortune, but unless an operator brings in one around ten thousand barrels his work passes untreated. Under E. J. Milley's direction the Pacific Petroleum Corporation got its share of recognition by bringing in g. ten thousand barrel well on the Koontz property. Koontz No. 2 was completed at 4715 and the big well is producing the usual 35 high gravity oil. The Amalgamated Oil Company in the completion of Butterworth No. 5 has brought in the first clean well east of Carlton Road. The Butterworth producer was completed at 4590 is making a thousand barrels of 24.5 gravity oil. The Amalgamated's north line test well Benton No. I has passed the 5000 foot mark and the indications for production cannot be said to be lending any encouragement. Wahlberg, Farm Advisor Orange County) We hear much these days about water conservation in the mountain watersheds and in the river courses, and it is a most worthy and necessary endeavor. Water is the life of agriculture in Southern California and possibly no one appreciates this fact more than the Orange County grower. There is another angle to the conservation movement, however, that has been largely overlooked by the average grower, and that is conservation in water application. This phase is entirely within the control of the water user, and requires no special taxation to finance or engineer the project. It is water conservation right at home—in the citrus grove particularly; sometimes in the walnut grove, but not as general. Actual field observations previous to and during the recent series of soil moisture field demonstrations conducted by the Agricultural Extension Service has emphatically disclosed the fact that on many of the heavier soil types in the county too much water has been applied. Irritations have been applied regularly according to the calendar regardless of the condition and needs of the soil strata in the root zone.
