WINS HANDICAP ON SCOTCH ALE
(By International News Service)
LONDON, May 28.—Down from the "Hielands" of Scotland has come the tale of how White Bud, a horse of ... Ket hire who romped home in 50 to 1 winner in the Lindholm Handicap, trained for her history making race.
Johnny McCall, who trained White Bud, tells the story.
"A few days before the race," Johnny said, "White Bud got fractions and ran away with a stable boy. Somehow the outburst seemed to affect the filly and she was off her teed for several days. The day before the race I gave her a bottle of heavy Scotch ale and she drank deep and hearty.
"I'm not claiming that Scotch ale is the ideal beverage for race horses in training, but it certainly stimulated White Bud."
If long shots like White Bud continue to win it is likely that the Bookmakers' Protective Ass'n will take steps to see that some sort of an "eighteenth amendment" is passed to prohibit giving Scotch ale to race horses.

ENGLAND BEATS U. S. IN BETTING
By DAVIS J. WALSH
(I. N. S. Sports Editor)
NEW YORK, May 28.—Ask any man who thinks he knows the difference between succotash and short-cake, and firing from the hip, he will tell you that America is the greatest gambling nation in the world. He is quite wrong, (as always). He is merely retailing the common impression that nothing beyond the limits of this country is done quite so well, whether the matter in question happens to be theft, suicide or non-stop dancing.
Although there is slight satisfaction in being a nation of gamblers, whatever honor goes with that distinction must be awarded to England. There almost anyone with the price of a rangleless ladder will back his so-called judgment on any sporting event, and in consequence hundreds of thousands change hands every week.

DUBOIS, Pa., May 28—Uriah Richards, well-known citizen of this city, has not heard the sound of a human voice for 50 years until the other day. When he was 20 months old he was stricken with spinal meningitis and has hearing left him. Though normal in every other way, it has been a world of silence for him ever since.
But at last he has heard a human voice, though he knew not what it said or meant. He was too small to talk much if any when he lost his hearing, so he never learned the meaning of words.
A friend in an electrical store invited him to listen to a radio. It was a high-power receiving set with a two-stage amplifier which magnifies the normal sound about 600 times. To the ordinary person it would sound like a mighty erasing of great guns.
First they put the receivers on Richards' head. Then the friend began to tinker with the dials. Things began to happen which told those watching the experiment that Richards was hearing.
The Dalai Lama of Tibet own a motorcycle.

YEARNS TO LASH
WIFE BEATING MEN
ATLANTA, Ga., May 28—A cry for the ancient Georgia statute providing thirty lashes on the bare back of any person convicted of wife beating went up from Recorder Geo. E. Johnson in open court when C. L. New, roalroad switchman, admitted he had not only maltreated his helpmate but had driven her and the four children out into a storm at 2 o'clock in the morning. New admitted he was drunk.
Fines and imprisonment won't work for fellows like you!" stormed the judge in passing sentence. "We used to have a law that would cover your case, and I wish goodness I could invoke the old statute now. Thirty lashes would teach you a nice lesson!"
But the sentence was only ten and costs.
