THER VENUS PUTS YOUNG TIGER STARS IN SHADE PUTS YOUNG TIGER STARS IN SHADE The remarkable work of Herman Pillette and the promise shown by Sammy Johnson, the other Portland star with the Tigers last year caused Tiger fans to believe that these two lads would not only lead the Detroit hurling staff this year but make a bid for league honors. These two hopes may be realized before the season ends. But right now the gent who is drawing the lion's share of attention with the battling Bengals is the veteran George Dauss. When George wound the champion Yankees around his well-worn glove recently, holding them to five hits, he registered his sixth straight victory of the current season. This is almost half as many games as he won last season and within four of as many as he won in 1921. Last year Dauss won thirteen and lost that number. Pillette led him with nineteen victories and only twelve defeats. The year before Dauss won ten games. Detroit fans are discussing the rosy chances Ty's team would have this year if Howard Ehnke were still with the club. Ehmke turned in seventeen victories for Cobb last year. This year he is hitting a better gait with the tall-end Red Sox. Cobb allowed Ehmke to depart not because he failed to turn in enough victories but because he failed to show the fighting spirit Cobb demands of his players. George Dauss in action.
