ELKS WILL MEET
FAST GABS TEAM
Anaheim Elks will engage the fast baseball team from the U. S. S. New York at the high school field Sunday afternoon, Manager Pete Hax stated today. The sailors from the New York have one of the best aggregations in the Pacific fleet, playing in the semi-finals last Sunday. Lt. J. B. Cooke, wellknown among So. Cal. sportsmen, is the gobe manager.
Anaheim will be in good shape again, Hax believes. Captain Buster Callan has been working out with Harry Hughes who has been doctoring his arm. Arch Hawkins is convalescent again while Pendleton and Bush limbered up last Sunday with the Legion team.
HEAVY SEA DEMAND
GREAT FALLS, Mont., May 23.
Jack Dempsey will be guest of honor this afternoon at a luncheon sponsored by the Rotary, Kiwanis, Commercial Club, Merchants Association and other local organizations, after which he will give a sparring exhibition at the Grand Opera house for the benefit of the St. Thomas Orphanage.
Tuesday Dempsey worked in the outside ring just completed at which no charge was made but admission charges start Thursday. In his three-round sparring exhibition the champion displayed powerful punches, clever foot work and stiff in-fighting. He dropped Powers, a heavy, weight, in a single round.
Orders for reserved seats continue to pour in from all sections of the country.

SAYS BRITAIN MUST RE-ADJUST DEFENSES
LONDON, May 23.—"Great Britain must re-adjust her defenses," said Lord Kirkenhead, former lord chancellor, in an article in John Bull today.
"The British cannot control their destinies while another nation knows that in 12 hours it could destroy the nerve center of the empire.
"The country is safe only so long as it can be protected by the strong arm of its own citizens. We must all maintain our navy. We scrapped battleships in accordance with our undertakings at the Washington conference. Other nations have not yet taken that course, among them a nation which is allied with us and friendly toward us, but which at this moment is diplomatically divergent from our views."
Lord Birkenhead said there must be a re-evaluation of British maritime and aerial power.
AVENATTI FUNERAL
HELD IN L. A. TUES.
Funeral services for Mrs. L. Avenatti, 67, of near Cypress, were held yesterday afternoon in a Catholic church in Los Angeles, with burial in the Catholic cemetery there.
Mrs. Avenatti was living with her sons, Louis and Dominguez, on the Moody ranch which they had leased. The son, Louis, went into the house on an errand Friday morning about 9 o'clock from the field, and found his mother lying on the floor, unconscious. He picked her up to place her on the bed, but she died in his arms. This was the second sudden attack in a few weeks, apparently from heart trouble.
