BRITISH PROFIT BY U. S. BOOTLEGGING BY DAVID M. CHURCH (I. N. S. Staff Correspondent) LONDON, May 22.—Amazing statistics published here shown that British distilleries are profiting greatly from American prohibition. Whereas the direct exportation of liquors and spirits to the United States has decreased from 1,311,000 proof gallons in 1913 to 29,000 proof gallons in 1922, the indirect exports have increased nearly 500 per cent. In 1912 the export of spirits from the British Isles to the British West Indies and the Bahamas were 93,000 gallons, whereas in 1922 the export of products was 516,000 gallons. At the present rate of export it appears that the United States during 1922 will import, via the Bahama smuggling route, nearly 1,400,000 gallons of spirit from the British Isles. This represents 30 per cent proof liquor, which will probably be so diluted that it will be sold for nearly 3,000,000 gallons by the time your favorite bootleger and his friends have finished doctoring it. Under Secretary of Foreign Affairs McNeil admits that Great Britain is worried over the liquor smuggling from its West Indian possessions, fearful feet this will bring about a diplomatic impasse between the U. S. and Great Britain. LONDON EAGER TO SEE RETURN OF FAMED U. S. OPERA STAR (By International News Service) LONDON, May 22.—English musical circles are awaiting with considerable interest an American contribution to English music in the appearance of Meta Reddish upon the concert stage. Born in Buffalo, Miss Reddish won international fame as prima donna of the Buenos Aires Opera Co. and with the Chicago Grand Opera Co. She made her debut at the San Carlos Opera, of Naples, and sung leading soprano roles opposite Bonel, Titta Ruffo, Constantino and Lazzaro. At the height of her success Miss Reddish gave up her career for a domestic life, when she married an English army officer. Now, after three years absence from the concert stage, she is preparing to return and to make a tour. YALE WILL HAVE NURSING COURSE (By International News Service) NEW HAVEN, Conn., May 22 — Future Yale commencement processions that wing across ancient New Haven Green should be enlivened by a new graduating costume of nurse's cap and uniform. For president Jan. R. Angel announces that Yale University is to start the first university undergraduate school of nursing in the United States from funds supplied by the Rockefeller Foundation. The school will have its own dean, faculty, buildings and budget, and the course will be completed in 28 months, according to present reckoning. Dr. Angell explains the new school saying: "In its curriculum the Yale school will break away from the present apprentice system of nurse training. That system, subject as it is to the labor demands and exigencies of hospital needs and now abandoned in other professional fields, no longer provides satisfactory preparation for the nursing profession. It absorbs the time of the student, endangers her health and leaves too little time for educational activities." WANTS THE WHOLE WORLD TO KNOW How Dr. Carey's Matshoot Prescription Banished His Kidney and Bladder Troubles. Dr. Daniel G. Carey, Elmira, N. Y. "I want you to know so that you will be able to tell the whole world just what your wonderful prescription has done for me. I was confined to my bed for 26 weeks. At the end of that time my family called in Dr. Carey to see what he could do. He at once prescribed his Matshoot Prescription No. 777 with the result that I am now, after a few weeks treatment, up and around; able to dress myself and attend to my personal wants. I have been out riding several times, doing my own driving. My kidneys and bladder are acting perfectly; my blood is fast assuming its natural color; my appetite is strong and natural and instead of being in my grave as everybody prophesied, I am alive and on the highway toward renewed health, thanks to Dr. Carey and his wonderful medicine." We hope to have them, but— Our ability to furnish cars depends not only on our own efforts, but on the ability in the United States to function properly. For three years the railroads have been strung forward. They are beginning to see daylight. Since January last, nearly 10% of commercial freight have been handled than in the corresponding months of 1920, so the same months the car shortage has been reduced by one-half. These figures indicate effort by both shippers and carriers. this program the Santa Fe is— providing new engines and cars; enlarging storage; building second track wherever land is habitable; and enlarging its yards every facility. In addition it is making comfort to reduce its "bad order" cars and thus to lessen the normal number, to the extent number of miles per day outbound to get as heavy loading per car bound what we have set out to do can be called all over the country, the question is simply, is solved, but to reach that must help. We therefore ask all Shippers Lead promptly and to capacity whenever practicable; Unload without delays; Ship early in the season for road construction and for coal storage purposes; Increase storage facilities; Order only the number of cars he loaded daily; and Avoid shipping under "to-order bills and reponsibilities as far as possible. W. B. STOREY, President The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway MONTEBELLO IS SOON DUE FOR SURPRISES WITH OIL OPERATORS Montebello it seems is due for some surprises soon. The Arcadia Oil Company has its test well down 4150 feet and the showings were of such a nature that it was thought best to take some core samples and make sure that nothing was being passed up. H. L. Whiston's tallest oil derrick in the world well Biknell No. 1 continues to drill in that hard formation the Montebello drilling interesting. Some 1400 feet of hole has been made and the hard conglomerate struck soon after drilling started continues almost unbroken. The Union Oil Company is making a great effort to recover the deep sand discovery test well La Merced No. 24 from a fishing job. A nice sand was found in this well at 4915 feet and seems to have great things in store for the deep development of the old field. The interest at Richfield centers about the Standard Oil Co.'s deep test well on the Kraemer property Kraemer 1-15A drilled to 5247 feet is drilling out the cement and preparing to make a test for production. Should the Standard deep well prove a producer it will open up a big district in the eastern end of the Richfield. The Torrence field got a lot of encouragement last week when the Petroleum Midway's Cavern No. 1 increased its production from 80 to almost 300 barrels. The gravity of the well was raised from 15 to 17. This producer was completed a week ago at a depth of 3200 feet. The Standard Oil company has gone back on the Lomita well and will carry it from 4475 deeper. The Union Oil Company's Weston at 4386 failed to make much of a showing on the production and will plug back. W. M. Keck has stopped drilling on the test well at Fairview, the Fairview Oil Company's Adamswell, Keck carried the well to 4875 and was satisfied with the test. The Fairview oil company however continues to have faith in their field and will proceed. It is shut off water in the Adams well and carry the Goldschmidt well now drilling at 4800 feet on for further production. HIS NAME IS JINX TO BRITISH ARTIST O'DONNELL NO. 1 IS 2800 BARREL WELL The feature of the Huntington Beach field for the week was the bringing in of O'Donnell No. 1 on the Texcal property at 4832 feet and is making a 29 gravity product. O'Donnel No. 2 is now drilling at 4770 feet and will be on production soon. The Mosier Special took over the O'Donnel properties a few months ago and has certainly made a creditable showing developing them. The Anchor Oil Company got a nice well with the completion of Burnett No. 1 an 1800 barrel producer. The new Anchor well was completed at 4820 feet and the production registers better than 25 gravity. The Gypsey Oil Company redrilled and put on production a 100 barrel well at No. 3. Redrilled and put on production in the top zone the well is doing as was expected. The Gypsey Oil Company it is understood is working on plans for the redrilling and deepening of all its wells and will share in the deep sand production of the field soon. E. G. Lewis is showing his ability to put a hole down. The old General Petroleum Community No. 1 has been deepened by him from 440 and to better than 4500 feet. The formation is running in brown sandy shale and the deep production hoped to make this well a success has not been reached. E. Walter Co., Jordan, Willys-Knight and Overland institution. Effective May 15, every Jordan car which has satisfactorily served a Jordan owner and is offered for resale, must bear that will be known as the Mark of Jordan Service. This is a protected plate, registered by the company at Washington and authorized only by the Jordan Co., after compliance by the dealer with certain standard rebuilding regulations. This metal plate will be issued by the Jordan Co., upon proof by the dealer that he has complied with the standard regulations, and will be attached to the forward dash underneath the hood just above the starting motor. It will guarantee to the purchaser that the car on which it appears has been rebuilt in accordance with the national standard Jordan policy to which every Jordan dealer has subscribed. Not satisfied with giving merely this assurance to the public, Jordan has established an entirely new precedent in the industry by being first to establish a national scale of standardized prices on all Jordan cars which have been brought up to the standard required before the registered plate is issued. This will assure to the purchaser that he can buy a Jordan car offered for resale at the same price that every individual pays in the territory in which he lives. CLASS SACRAMENTO, May 22. — Blocking an attempt of the Southern Pacific Co. to force a reduction in the state tax on their electric lines, Attorney General Webb forwarded an opinion to the state board of equalization today holding that the Southern Pacific is a "steam railroad company" and not subject to the lower tax rate applied to electric roads. Steam roads come under the 7 per cent assessment classification while electric railways are assessed on a basis of 5:1-4 per cent. OTOOLE Physician & Surgeon Phone: Residence 546 Office 569 White Star Pardners— ensure Your Income— Three times within the past year we have experienced substantial reductions in the price of crude oil. These successive reductions are not based upon a supply in excess of demand, but by the overtaxing of present pipeline and storage facilities. Foreign markets are waiting for every barrel of this wonderful 35 gravity oil that we can deliver to tankers at the great Los Angeles Harbor. Make That Income Permanent— No chain is stronger than its weakest link. Only by owning, producing, transporting and refining its own crude oil can such an organization become an independent, self-sustaining unit. Crude oil at the Harbor commands not less than 85 cents per barrel over the field price at the well. Think of the profits from pipe line charges alone. A 6-inch line can handle 30,000 bbls. daily.
