DAILY GREETINGS TO OUR READERS
The simplest and most obvious use of sorrow is to remind us or God. It would seem that a certain shock is needed to bring us in contact with reality.
—Frederick W. Robertson.
Observe Memorial Day with proper respect for the heroic dead.
Hysteria should be winnowed out of politics. Political questions should be decided on their merits, with calm reasoning and sober judgment.
If it be possible to reduce federal taxation, by all means let the reduction be made. The people should not be laden with unnecessary tax burdens.
Memorial day is not an occasion for bolsterous pastimes. It should be observed in seemingly fashion, with reverence to the heroes to whom it is dedicated.
When the Chinese start in to profiteer off Americans through brigandage, there is great protest. Americans are not accustomed to such crude form of profiteering.
This nation honors itself in honoring its mothers. Not only on Mother’s Day, but on every day, mothers should have the devoted chivalrous attention of the country.
Latin American abstains from wars and revolutions. Improvement in this respect down there during the last few years has been remarkable. Those republicans are setting a good example before the world.

Prosperity has spread its benison all over the land, affecting beneficially every industry and every interest. It remains for the people to exercise prudence and sagacity in retaining this heavy measure of thriving.
Aerial passenger and mail service across the Atlantic will be regularly established in all likelihood, in the near future. Great things may be expected from this, in speed and in supplementing the fast steamship service.
The port of Los Angeles in its intercostal shipping business through the Panama Canal leads all other American ports. Its volume of trade is stupendous, exceeding that of New York and all the other great harbor cities which ship through the canal.
Aeronautic development is advancing swiftly. Improvements are cumulative. The betterment of today becomes the stepping stone to the improvement of the morrow. In safety and substantiality, as well as in speed, there is great advancement in air craft.
CALIFORNIA LEADS IN NUMBER OF AUTOS
California is the banner automobile state of the Union, and has a greater number of machines than any other part of the world. The one-millionth automobile license has been issued in this state. No other commonwealth equals this. New York has been surpassed by California—a proud distinction indeed.
There are good and sufficient reasons why California takes the premiership in ownership and use of automobiles. The two chief reasons are—mild climate and superb improved highways. The first is a permanent asset. The second is an asset that will endure. California is committed to the cause of good roads. It has a splendid system of improved highways. It is adding to this constantly. The question of highway betterments is uppermost in this state he greater part of the time.

REWARD CONVICTION IN HAZING TRAGEDY
Northwestern University authorities have acted vigorously in offering a reward of $10,000 for information leading to the solution of the mystery pertaining to the disappearance of Leighton Mount, freshman, twenty months ago, during a class rush.
This heavy reward may be successful in bringing solution of the problem that has stirred the whole country. The fate of young Mount should be determined. If he was ruthlessly slain in hazing, his slayers should be prosecuted under criminal law. There is no warrant for brutality of that nature. Hazing which endangers life or impairs the health of its victim is intolerable. No institution of learning in this land can afford to countenance anything of the kind.
