U. S. GOLFERS HOLD OWN WITH BRITISH
By ROBERT E. HARLOW
(L. N. S. Staff Correspondent)
ST. ANDREWS, Scotland, May 18.
While a piercing wind, at times assuming the proportions of a gale, struck home to the bone, the American golfers managed to hold their own with the British in the open skirmishes today for the Walker cup, emblematic of international team supremacy.
At the end of the first 18 holes, Bob Gardner and Max Marston, of the American team, were five up on Robert Harris and V. L. Hooman.
George V. Rotan, of Houston, Texas, and S. Davidson Herron, of Pittsburgh, were six up on E. W. E. Holdenness, former British champion, and the Scottish star, Hope.
Some of the American pairs did not fare so well, Francis Ouimet and Jesse Sweetzer being 4 down to Cyril Tolley and Roger Wethered, while Harrison Johnson and Jack Neville were 3 down to Wilson and Murray at the end of the morning play.
ANAHEIM HI GIRLS LOSE TO ORANGE
Anaheim girls baseball team failed Coach Jacques last evening at Orange bowing 13 to 9 in a league battle. The locals were completely outplayed. The local girls have been putting their efforts on track and have given up baseball practice. The fieldings was good and the batting poor. The score was 6 to 6 in the 5th inning. After that Orange tightened up.
This eliminates Anaheim from the county championship. The local girls had that honor last year.
DENIES RETIREMENT
WASHINGTON, May 18.—Formal denial was made at the White House again today on behalf of President Harding that Colonel George Harvey plans to retire as American ambassador to Great Britain.
BEWARE OUIMET! IS WARNING FROM BRITISH COURSE
Francis Ouimet.
The recent feat of Francis Ouimet in winning the coveted St. George's trophy of Great Britain, is pointed to by golf enthusiasts as a warning that the former U. S. champ is ready to make his presence felt in the amateur and open tourneys in this country later this year. After winning national titles in 1913 and 1914 Ouimet failed to hit his stride for several seasons.

RACE FANS FLOCK TO 49TH "DERBY"
(By International News Service)
LOUISVILLE, May 18: The final touches were to be handed preparations for the 49th Kentucky derby today. Tonight the town will be full of race-followers; tomorrow morning early the Pari-Mutuel machines will be clicking off the bets and the bets and the clerk's passing out the pastebards.
Today that strange gathering of folk—ranging from millionaire to tramp—or from tramp to millionaire—was engaged in the same pastime, that of picking a winner from among 18 horses which are expected to line up at the starting post at Churchill Downs.
The sentiment has switched slightly. Vigil, winner of the Preakness at Pitllico, now holds the center of attention with the Whitney-Greentree stable entry relegated to second place. Bob McMillan, pride of the Kentucky Bluegrass, and Thomas Pendergast, of Kansas City, is sneaking up in public esteem.
If the Filipino can furnish rubber enough to make America independent, he'll never furnish arguments enough to make himself independent.

Mummify Dead by Electricity
The long-sought art of preserving the human form after death in nearly lifelike aspect, has apparently been achieved in a scientific method developed by an expert embalmer who has devoted years of study to the work. The method not only promises to afford a means of perpetuating the illustrious dead more successfully than the Egyptian mummies, but offers possibilities for the disposition of the dead in sanitary ways that introduce none of the objections of ordinary burial methods.
Electricity plays the leading part in the apparatus, which has the outward appearance of a sarcophagus and consists of a chamber which receives a rolling copper table upon which the body is placed. This table forms one terminal for the contact with the body and the other terminal consists of a number of contacts made on the upper surface of the body. When the circuit is closed an electric current passes through the body at many different points, sterilizing and dehydrating it beyond the point where the organisms that cause decomposition can exist. The success of the method is attested by experiments performed upon dogs and cats, and by a test upon the body of a man.
Dutch Float Land for Home Sites
Perhaps the quaintest spot in quaint old Holland is the floating village of Giethoorn, in the province of Overyssel, one of the low regions which have been water-logged for centuries because of the periodical inundations of the sea. Taking advantage of the condition of the soil, the hardy Dutchmen of Giethoorn have learned how to cut away sections of turf, and then float them through the canals to any desired spot. Poles, about 12 feet in length, are used to shove off the floating home sites, which are cut away beyond the village limits and then guided to town.
Utilize Goats to Prevent Fire
As a means of fire prevention at the Naval Powder Factory at Indian Head, Md., a herd of Rocky Mountain goats are allowed to roam around the buildings, so that they may devour the dead leaves and other inflammable rubbish that otherwise would litter the ground. The goats effectively remove this dangerous material, as it is all that they have to subsist on.

$75,000 HALE AND MILLION DOLLAR BABY
Sammy Hale, besides being the star member of the Athletic infield, is also a proud daddy, and like most daddies, considers his youngster worth a million. Hale has been suffering from a severe cold the last few days and has been ordered to take things easy. So for a time, Hale is to be a gentleman of liness, and goes to Shibs Park every day to see his teammates perform. Hale, with Mrs. Hale and their baby are shown above.
76 BURNED TO DEATH IN SCHOOLHOUSE
(Continued from Page 1)
score of persons got jammed against a closed door and thus held up escape for many people.
The superintendent of schools, on the stage with diplomas in his arms, made a futile attempt to stem the tide of panic. He shouted that all could get out safely if they took their time, but his voice was lost in the screams of the women and children.
The superintendent and those of the graduating class, being tarthest from the one stairway, are believed to have perished.
The flames spread through the dry, wooden building with almost no water litter the ground. The goats effectively remove this dangerous material, as it is all that they have to subsist on.
POLICE UNEARTH
BIG LIQUOR SUPPLY
White mule, beer and two dozen bottles of home brew, were found hidden in pig pon, chicken yard stalls and mangers and in various parts of the house, when a force of Sheriff Sam Jerigan's men raided the place of Simon Medermonte yesterday afternoon in Richfield. Mr.ermonte was taken to the Court Jail, and locked up. He is expected to be arraigned before the judge is over.
There was no still, and nobody else was involved, according to the officers. Never, however, has liquor of so many kinds scattered in many queer hiding places been earthed. "Unearth" was litter is some cases, some of the at least being dug up from under a man pile.
Those in the raiding party were Deputy Sheriffs McClellan, Ellis and Hefner and Motorcycle Officer O. K. Carr and H. S. Warner.
THREATENS SUICIDE THEN DISAPPEAL
Did "Dock" Baker, well-known cal bootblack, commit suicide? This is a question which is puzzled "Dock's" wife, and the local police following the disappearance of bootblack after he had written a note to a local attorney saying that he going to take his life.

You've heard of the daring of the Texas Rangers, those famous vigilantes along the Rio Grande country—stalwart men of fearless fibre whom nothing swerves from the path of duty. The story concerns one of them; the part indeed played by one of their best.
