PUBLIC GAUGED BY FAKE WAR HEROES WASHINGTON, May 14.—A new kind of post-war profiteer who capitalizes on the injuries of the disabled former service men and has sprung up all over the country to prey upon the pocketbooks of guilty persons endowed with more sympathy than practical business sense, according to C. Hamilton Cook of Buffalo, N. Y., national commander of the Disabled American Veterans. Uttorly without scruples, this profiteer, operating through so-called organizations and spurious publications, mullets the American public each year of thousands of dollars under the pretense that the money will go to aid permanently disabled veterans. Cook declared. The disabled American Veterans recently conducted a nation-wide investigation which disclosed numerous instances of such practices the country over, Cook said. He placed considerable data and evidence purporting to substantiate his charges before officials of the Justice and Post Office department for governmental action against the fraud perpetrators. The public generally is annually flaunted of vast sums of money under the guise of relief for crippled former service man. "We have enlisted the government's aid and that of two extensive business associations to prosecute every spurious organization we can obtain sufficient evidence against." "During the Christmas holidays," Cook continued, "the country was circulated by an alleged organization that is not even recognized by the Veteran's Bureau, and several thousand dollars were gathered in from people who thought it going to aid the war's disabled." "Later an agent of a so-called association of the disabled returned." BUENA PARK, May 15.—The losses in the membership drive recently held by the Woman's club, entertained the winners at a delightful afternoon party at the home of Mrs. H. Warren on Friday. The spacious living and dining rooms were abloom with spring flowers. There were four tables of five hundred and one of Plinch. A take off on the winners was written by Mrs. Caryl Snyder but the winners heard of it and came back at them with a rhythm written by Mrs. B. R. Shinn. At the close of the afternoon delicious refreshments of ice cream with crushed strawberry and cake were served. The guests were Mesdonnies Lee Harvey, Frank Hugenot, R. H. Meyer, Eva Shirley, J. P. Greenewalt, J. C. Childer, R. S. Cumalas, Glenn Crilley, John Johnson, John Page, W. A. Chandler, L. J. Robeson, W. B. Shaw, E. P. Mann, W. T. Calaway, B. A. Calaway, N. D. McDowell, Geo McNeill, W. A. Johnson, Geo Cole, E. L. Cole, B. R. Shinn, Kate Lonhardt, A. L. Bennett, Geo Trapp and H. E. Warren. Mrs. Ivan Ellmore and little daughter motored to Los Angeles on Friday. Miss Gertrude Nelson of the Angles hospital spent the week-end at her home here. Misses Blanch Whitzell and Billie Follis entertained with a winele bake at the home of Miss Whitzell on Saturday evening. The young folks played games and roasted weinles. The guests were Misses Sarah Mitchell, Buelah Nelson, Eunice Mann, Mina Lee Dodd, Nina Dodd, Blanche Whitzell and Billie Follis. Dick Osborne, Harlow Whitzell, Aubrey Houser, Eugene Childers, Noel Dodd and Charles Hillman. BUENA PARK, May 15. NEW FOR SALE—2 cut. C. S. Sturge west of Caulfield. "We have enlisted the government's aid and that of two extensive business associations to prosecute every spurious organization we can obtain sufficient evidence against." "During the Christmas holidays, Cook continued, 'the country was circulated by an alleged organization that is not even recognized by the Veteran's Bureau, and several thousand dollars were gathered in from people who thought it going to aid the war's disabled.' "Later an agent of a so-called association of the disabled returned from Europe exhibiting a cross he declared he picked up from the grave of an unknown American soldier. The war department has officially notified us that there have not even been in existence such legitimate markings.' Since the Disabled American Veterans undertook to expose such frauds, Cook said, more than 100 persons have been arrested in the Middle and Far West, charged with soliciting for a magazine purporting to be a disabled veteran's publication. "Now we have brought the matter squarely up to the Department of Justice and the Postoffice Department." Cook said. "Already the investigating agents of these two Federal offices have gathered considerable evidence, and we hope that these organizations and publications will soon be entirely out of existence through the jailing of their officers and editors."
