GUARDIAN GRANTED PERMIT TO LEASE
Drilling operations on a considerable scale on several parcels of land in the Puffree tract, with minimum rentals and royalties amounting to $14,400 for the first two years, were authorized today when Superior Judge R. Y. Williams issued an order permitting a lease in connection with the matter of the guardianship of Alonzo E. Kendall D., Margaret L., George G. and Albert Rowland Yorba. Juanita C. Yorba, the guardian, receives the authorization to execute the lease to C. L. Nickle and J. R. Scott, representing the Providential Oil Co., on lots five and six in the tract, three other pieces 210 by 240, 170 by 165 and 100 by 225, together with a 20-foot strip along Placentia.
HOUSES CLEAR FILES FOR FINAL WEEK
SACRAMENTO, May 11—Both houses of the legislature were busy today clearing their files as this was the last day that either house may consider its own bills.
The chief measure passed in the senate was a bill to provide for the use of monies in special funds. The bill is designed to prevent financial complications arising from the new budget.
The Schmidt 'anti-black list' bill prohibits employers from black-listing strikers, and which passed the assembly several days ago, was tabbed in the senate labor and capital committee today.

ELLIS RESIDENCE STRIPPED BY THIEF
The Talbors house of Mellie M. Ellis of 1021 West Third St., Santa Ana, which Ellis reported several days ago as robbed, was literally stripped of everything or practically everything it contained, a report today to the Santa Ana police showed.
Furniture, beeding, dishes and not to the amount of several hundred dollars in value, were taken.
Several similar robberies have taken place in or near Santa Ana the past few months.
Sheriff Sam Jernigan paid today that he was satisfied the Mexican in the vicinity who had gone to his home in Ontario at about the time the robbery was not the guilty man. The Sheriff and his deputies now are working on another clue.
The articles taken in the robbery, which took place between Friday and Monday last, were: two feather beds, four large bed pillows, six fancy sofa pillows, four linen sheets, four linen pillows, four linen sheets, four linen mode, containing linen and crocheted bath towels, and with glass knobs; two small white enamel chairs, small white enamelled breakfast table, maragogany chair, rocker and big arm chair; the latter with velvet cushions; four dining room chairs with leather bottoms; one day spread with blue embroidery and pillow covers; two willow fruit baskets; one Japanese sawing baskets; one crochet runner; one mahogany waist with glass bottom; dry cell battery, glove box with about eight pairs gloves, bronze clock, small; ivory clock, dresser style, round covered vegetable dish with gold and black hands; six platters, assorted sizes, to match vegetable dish; violet hand painted salt shaker; dozen plates; gravy bowl; large water pitcher with flowers; three gray and blue blankets; four comforters; covered aluminum baking dish; blow torch, large size; two sets auto socket wrenches.

SOCIETY RECEIVES SLANDEROUS LETTERS

NEW YORK, May 11.—A gigantic "poison pen" scandal involving a number of society families was revealed here this afternoon. The district attorney's office is investigating dozens of complaints from prominent men who said they had received letters with scurrilous and insulting references to the members of their families.
It was reported that one suicide resulted from the letters.
The letters are anonymous, but all were sent to envelopes bearing on the upper left hand corner the names of persons a prominent as their recipients. This was to give the impression that the persons mentioned had sent them, although they had not.
SLAIN ITALIAN WAS IN DEBT FOR CAR
Nunzio Spaminata owed $185.16 on his Ford coupe, the Pay Security Co., of Los Angeles informed Sheriff Sam Jernigan in a communication received today. Spaminata was the Italian whose hacked body was found near the dirt road between Northern Station and La Habra several weeks ago.

(Washington, May 11.)—President Harding today completed the personnel of the United States Railroad Labor Board at Chicago by reappointing Judge R. M. Barton and Horace Baker, and naming E. F. Grable, former head of the railway maintenance of way employees.
Grable will present labor on the Board. Barton the public and Baker is the representative of the railroad management.
DOGS FIND BODY

LOS ANGELES, May 11.—The body of a baby girl was found on the shore at Holton Station, Del Rey Beach, today by Edward Clark, who investigated after his dogs had been barking over the body for more than an hour.
The child, apparently new born, had been in th water eight days, the police believe.
ROYER WILL CASE RESUMED MONDAY
The General Julian O. Royer will probate will be resumed on Monday when the contestees will put on further witnesses. It is understood Superior Judges R. Y. Williams and a jury are sitting in the case.
ACT AGAINST VERNON
(Los Angeles, May 11.)—A resolution to fine the Vernon Club $13,000 for playing Ray French and Jess Doyle this season will be introduced at Monday's meeting of the coast league directors at San Francisco, Charley Lockhart, part owner of the Seattle Club said today.
INFANT PUNERALS
Funeral services were held yesterday at the McAnlay funeral parlor for the infant of Mr. and Mrs. Raileigh Taylor of Pullerton, who died Wednesday afternoon. Interment was in the Loma Vista cemetery.
The infant of Mr. and Mrs. C. G. Tyler of Garden Grove who died Wednesday night was buried yesterday at Los Alamitos cemetery, Angus McAulay, funeral director.
The expression "topsy turvy" was originally "topside-turfway." When turf is cut for fuel, it is turned upside down to dry, the "topside" of the "turfway" being underneath. So the expression came to mean upside down.
STATE GAINS IN BANK TAX FIGURES
SACRAMENTO, May 11—Taxes collected from California banks, both domestic and national, during the past year totaled $3,758,053.14 according to a statement by State Controller Ray L. Ridley.
In the preceding year the banks paid $3,634,386.28 or $123,666.86 less.
The tax collected from the domestic banks aggregated $2,105,598.10 as compared with $1,652,095.04 returned by the national banks.
Ridley's report also shows that the state netted $3,258,615 from taxes on insurance companies during the past year as compared with $3,088,392.29 in the previous year.

Mrs. F. A. Russell, who has been passing the winter with her niece, Mrs. H. A. Hawley and family, left yesterday for her home in Portland, Ore. She has wintered here two seasons and may decide to return next year to make her home.
Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Warrington, of Brea, are parents of a son weighing 7 pounds. He arrived in Anaheim via "The Retreat."
Eddie Torres was arrested this morning by O. B. Baxter on the middle of the street.
George Henry, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arch Henry, of Garden Grove road, has returned home for his summer vacation from Berkeley where he attends law school. He made the trip by boat.

The move is an attempt to remove the abuse practiced by many who have set themselves up as rabbis that they might dispense wine illegally.
