MARKETS TODAY'S QUOTATIONS BY International News Service NEW YORK STOCKS NEW YORK, April 27. The stock market closed irregularly today. Standard Oil of N. J. was weak, declining 1 1/2 to 37 1/4 a new low for this year. Phillips Petro. Los over 2 points at 59 3/4. The general list, however, was steady. Studebaker held near the top of the day at 123 3-8, a 1 1/2 point gain. Government bonds, unchanged; railway and other bonds steady. Stock sales today 659,600 shares; bonds $9,776,000. GRAIN REACTS VIOLENTLY CHICAGO, April 27. Violent reactions took place today on the grain market, the close being well below yesterday's list. Bulls fought sharply to regain control after a lower opening, but the market resisted their efforts. Trading was dulled in spite of the break, dealers refusing to believe the pressure would last long. Wheat closed 3-4c lower corn 1-2 to 1c off. Oats finished 1-4 to 5-8c lower. Provisions were irregular, lard registered a gain of 3c to a loss of 7c and ribs gained 2 to 5c. Baking powder causes the dough to rise quickly, and when a rolling pin is used too much of the gas is pressed out. The result is heavy biscuits.
