DAILY GREETINGS TO OUR READERS
O quickly fleeting! your own help disown—
Think—live upon your knees—trust God alone;
Try to be wise, meek, good, with anxious care.
Nor take on step which is not propit by prayer.
Victor Hugo.
Sugar is rising. So is popular indignation.
Permanently improved highways are a prodigious asset to California.
The poor man's dinner table and wardrobe should not be subject to the exactions of profit-eaters or speculative gamblers.
The 1924 Presidential contest will not lack for spice. Nor will there be any dearth of vinegar and tabasco sauce in it.
The way of the fraudulent oil stock should be shielded from the operations of smooth swindlers.
Honesty in business is mighty good advertising. And the person or firm that is honest in business is advertised by pleased and appreciative patrons.
California rapidly is becoming economically independent. Its production is on a huge scale, and of great diversity. If this state were cut off from the rest of the world for an indefinite period it would survive and thrive.
Why is there so little enthusiasm in Congress and in State Legislatures over measures, proposals and policies which have for their object the reduction of the cost of government and the lessening of taxes?
Royal houses are passing to extinction in the Old World. There are no kings or queens in the Western Hemisphere. This side of the earth has no dispensing with its thrones.
President Harding will be given a typically cordial, hospitable greeting when he comes to the Pacific coast. This state and sections relevant to his duties.
CHAUNCY M. DEPEW FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH
Chauncey M. Depew, hale at 89, has served his birthday anniversary. He markable figure. In a way he is a "hanging onto the tree of Time from generation. He has been the acquaintance or intimate of many great men and life. He has been a prominent figure a century.
Mr. Depew's sprightliness and vigor trume age are to be attributed to his cheerful disposition, his sunny philosophy and his moderation in all his habitats has been foreign to him. He has worked but he always has taken time to play cultivate his hobby—after-dinner speeches has achieved fame as an orator.
The lesson of cheerfulness and well may be learned from the life of Mr. There is too much tension, too much life-sapping strenuosity today. Men and too many women are forgetting to live.
RENOWNED PIANIST WELL PATRONIZER
Grand total earnings of $480,000 November is the record made by Ida Paderewski in his concerts in the United States. The renowned pianist composer and pianist has averaged $7000 for three house concerts. Some may criticise this as being ing. But it is nothing of the kind. Good not be overpaid. How much is Thomas and Luther Burbank to the world, in any way? How much is William Shakespeare to the world intellectually?
The uplift, the inspiration, the cultural petals, which a great violinist or the great gives mankind is worth more than calculated, in dollars and cents. Ignace rewaki is not overpaid. No other genius paid.
It is credible to America that it is superlative talent. This is shown in the drama, in literature.
The day is past when men vote as they are present day convictions, not upon the floms and prejudices of the past.
COMMENTS
Why is there so little enthusiasm in Congress and in State Legislatures over measures, proposals and policies which have for their object the reduction of the cost of government and the lessening of taxes?
Royal houses are passing to extinction in the Old World. There are no kings or queens in the Western Hemisphere. This side of the earth has no dispensing with its thrones.
President Harding will be given a typically cordial, hospitable greeting when he comes to the Pacific coast. This state and sections relegate political considerations when the President comes. He is welcomed as the chief magistrate, not as the leader of a political party.
California's advancement is steady and substantial. In every desirable way this state is making progress. It is gaining in population at the rate of more than 100,000 annually. It is increasing prodigiously is produced riches. And its popularity among tourists and pleasure-seekers is undiminished.
Men will be flying like birds, in a few years, from present indications. A Frenchman has devised a small aircraft with bird-like wings which will carry a man through the air. The time may come when use of the term "bird" as slang in referring to man, may not be slang at all.
The world looks to America for leadership in the promotion of international peace. This nation must not disappoint the reasonable expectations of mankind. It rightly and prudently may and should keep out of embroilments in the domestic political affairs of other countries. But there is a wide and safe field for active earnest endeavor to foster peace, without becoming entanglingly allied politically with other powers.
RAISIN DAY SHOULD BE OBSERVED WELL
Raisin Day should be observed with zealous interest in the big California industry which it is designed to promote. The raisin crop has become one of the immense assets to California, bringing millions of dollars of produced riches into the state annually. California raisins have become famous throughout the world. The quality is superlative.
Perhaps no industry embracing a soil product has been advertised more judiciously than has the California Raisin Day was promotional, of course. It has served its purpose, and is serving it. Advertising it is. But high-class advertising which catches the fancy of the people everywhere.
HERO OF SCIENCE DAY
NEW YORK EVENING POST
The discoverer of Tutankhamen's as truly a martyr of science as Chad the founder of Egyptology, who works to death in deciphering the Rosetta stone one aspect it is a tragic end. He did the supposed body of the king actually. But it is a personal tragedy rather than a disaster to science as the death of Sultan Rashid at the moment of their coveries would have been. Lord Carnarvon done his work when he and Howard ened the tomb of Luxor; the reaping scientific harvest remained a task for the archaeologists and historians who have begun the classification and study of tents.
And as a personal tragedy it has features of an extraordinary kind. Arion lived to see the expenditure of years of labor and a considerable warded by a discovery which ranks as three or four greatest exploits in the gical field and which seized on the wagition as no such exploit ever fore. He gained a place as one of company of men who have died in the dazzling victory—a death from arion's day to that of Nelson and I usually been esteemed of all deaths plent.
If men of great hereditary wealth wish to spend their money and labor while bounds of human knowledge, the prudent by the Earl might be less. He sampled all too rare in the aristocracy country. It was the more notable reaction it took. Not many years ago logy was a minor and despised branical study. Even yet its slender resemblance drawn from the funds of much universities. Lord Carnarvon was prominent man of great wealth who sonally devoted himself to it, and hibernable service.
