THE ORANGE COUNTY PLAIN DEALER An Independent Newspaper, Issued Every Afternoon Except Sunday Paul V. Hester, Editor & Pub. Lotus H. Louden, Adv. Manager DAILY GREETINGS TO OUR READERS God, who alone is living, dread, kind, true. Who judges, loves, forgives, constructs, destroys— Beholds our loftiest acts with pitying eyes. —Victor Hugo. The Federal Government is doing the commendable in prosecuting oil stock frauds. The over-credulious should be saved from their folly in falling into the clutches of conscienceless swindlers. Woodrow Wilson is as much averse to being shelved, politically, as was Colonel Roosevelt. The former President no doubt will take prominent part in the national campaign next year. There is much oil stock that is honest and a good investment. It should be protected against the odium which comes from fraudulent oil stock operations. Legitimate oil interests need protection, as well as the investing public. Pasadena is very much interested in the new highway route connecting this city via Bell. This road shortens the distance between the two cities and its improvement and opening augurs a heavier volume of travel by that highway. The unemployment situation has improved so greatly that few persons think of it or discuss it at all. It is like one who has been ill and has medicine to take regularly, but as health comes on, the medicine is forgotten and is taken irregular or not at all. The Presidential campaign of 1924 to all intents and purposes has opened. The skirmishes among candidates and their friends are proceeding. Maneuvering for tactical advantage is going on constantly. There will be no surcease until the votes are counted in November, 1924. While the government is proceeding against oil stock swindlers, it seems that proceedings should be taken at the same time against the imbecility which is prey to the snakes of crooks. NEW YORK LETTER BY LUCY JEANNE PRICE FLYING AS BIRDS DO IN A miniature airplane "with beating wings" which a man may strap to his body and fly away like a bird, is the newest serial creation. A Frenchman, an air pilot of long standing in the inventor of this process. By this method it may be possible to imitate the birds and for human beings to move about in the air with safety and celerity at very small cost. The air is to be the great highway of locomotion in future. Developments of the last fifteen years have stressed this in the minds of all who have studiously watched the evolution of aeronautics. The first airplanes were clumsy affairs and many lives were sacrificed as daring aviators experimented and as defects were exposed in letters of tragedy. One by one, the flaws have been corrected and remarkable improvements have been made in aerial vessels. That men should fly as the birds is no more remarkable than that men should fly in present types of airplanes and dirigibles. The air has been conquered in fundamentals. Inventive genius will go right on making progres and adding to the wondrous development of secure means of flying the air at great speed. Twenty-five years hence men may fly the air in small craft correspondingly with motor cycles on terra firma—craft equipped with wings, in which the flying of birds will be imitated. IDLENESS IS SOURCE OF MANKIND Voluntary idleness is one of the scourages of this land. There are great numbers of self-made tramps, and a great many in more respectable garb who should be in the same category with tramps. "They toll not neither do they spin." They do nothing useful, or clean, or elevating. The Presidential campaign of 1924 to all intents and purposes has opened. The skirmishes among candidates and their friends are proceeding. Maneuvering for tactical advantage is going on constantly. There will be no surcease until the votes are counted in November, 1924. While the government is proceeding against oil stock swindlers, it seems that proceedings should be taken at the same time against the imbecility which is prey to the snare of crooks. The people should demand more proof of the soundness of stock investments before they invest in them. Once Mexico compiles with the demands made by the government at Washington as a condition precedent to official recognition by the United States, the relations between the two countries should be kept on a cordial basis, if possible. The government and people of the United States should co-operate to keep Mexico pacified and to prevent any recurrence of the bloody insurrections which long have cursed that land. Recent developments in connection with the price of sugar point the way to remedial legislation needed from Congress and from State Legislatures. Any and all speculative gambling in necessaries of life should be prohibited. This manifestly should be governmental policy. The people should be protected against the greed that would fatten upon the necessaries of life. There are abundant avenues for legitimate, profitable investments. Speculation, under proper restrictions, is tolerable. But the field of necessity of life is not the proper field for speculative manipulation. Prices thereby oftentimes are forced up artificially and profiteers are given leeway to filch vast sums from consumers. This field should be closed to all speculative gambling for all time. WISE AND WITTY Man's unused energy will seek an outlet and often drifts into the wrong channels. The happiness due to you in the present is not sufficient offset by the consolation of 'ever after." Although misfortune's whip will dim life's flickering light it can be turned into benefit. The standard of success is so varied that the individual must let the world gauge his case. Today we are here, tomorrow we're gone. We may be missed but the world will go on. IDLENESS IS SOURCE OF MANKIND Voluntary idleness is one of the scourages of this land. There are great numbers of self-made tramps, and a great many in more respectable garb who should be in the same category with tramps. "They toll not neither do they spin," They do nothing useful, or clean, or elevating. They are non-productive. They are leading the life of a parasite. They feed upon society like vampires. The losses to the community because of these idlenesses is very great. There should be laws against wilful idleness on the part of able-bodied persons. No matter how wealthy a person may be, he or she should do something useful. Riches are no license to frivol away time and talent. Possession of great riches is no excuse for wasting time. Each and every person who is able to work should be required to do so. MOTOR VEHICLE SELL HUGELY HERE That California during March, bought more automobiles and motor trucks than any other state in the Union, is the belief of experts. All records in this state were shattered for that month, when 23,898 machines were sold. The unnumber went beyond the most sanguine expectations of those who keep their fingers on the pulse of the automobile trade. This denotes prosperity in California—wide-spread prosperity. The people would not be buying cars in such great numbers if they were not able financially to do so. The extraordinarily large number of sales this spring indicates the best economic conditions throughout California. That California is well adapted to autooting alo so is a factor in the big demand for cars here. Here in Southern California, in particular, conditions are ideal for motoring. Sales of motor vehicles here in the Southland for March increased 89 percent as compared with March of 1922. This section surely has the automobile enthusiasm. Its automobile trade is matched by but few portions of the United States. It is vitally important to economic weal of the nation that farmers prosper and receive re-numeration in return for their crops. And it is vitally important, too, that the masses of consumers should be able to purchase food supplies at reasonable prices. As between the farmer and producer, on one side, the equilibrium in prices of farm products should be maintained. While the farmer should have living prices for his crops the consumer should be able to buy farm produce at living prices. ABE MARTIN PARAGRAPHS (By Robert Quillen) April couldn't change her mind more frequently if she were a foreign policy. God has given mankind everything essential to happiness except appreciation. "Ah, well," sighed the philosophic jilt owner, "he who steals my car steals trash." There would be no complaint if klansmen had nothing to conceal except their identity. A lot of people think culture is a quality that makes wrong seem a little righter. What the movies are speaks so loud that at times we scarcely can hear what Will Hays says. Short and Snappy As proof of progress, we submit that modern youth would be bored stiff by the dime novel that was considered a menace to youth of yester-year. If the architect's plans go awry and leave a little space not quite large enough for a closet, he calls it a breakfast room. A hick town is a place where loyal churchmen brag that their parson shaves every morning. Correct this sentence: "The man stepped out on the street in a new spring hat and did not feel at all conspicuous." It is easy to love your neighbor unless he is the kind of a chap that is always explaining how he showed somebody where to head in. There is no hope of a settlement until the Powers find out just how much Germany won't pay. Still, repentence, doesn't keep you from living it over in memory and getting the same old thrill. Pepsin comes from a hog's stomach, but there is little pea in the man who has made a hog of himself. We are superstitious enough to believe that an insect ought to bite the originators of a lot of King Tut fads. It is difficult for a man to do his regular spring worrying when there is scarcely a shortage or a crisis in sight. Correct this sentence: "His heart was beating madly, and he bent and kissed the flapper softly on the forehead." You can't very well avoid work on Sunday, however, when you have a blowout five miles from a service station. The difference, as we understand it, is that in war it is called an engagement and in peace it is called a clash. We'll have more faith in the genuineness of patriotism when we see a government depending entirely on donations. If he is ignorant and lazy and perverse and envious, you are safe in assuming that he thinks he is one of the oppressed.
