God gives the dawn nor reckons every ray; Jove gives the dawn, nor reckons every drop. Victor Hugo Honesty is a prince among the virtues. Exercise in the open air is the best of tonic. Speculation in necessaries should be prohibited. Politics is the better because women have the franchise. The preventable fire continues to spread and devastation. The foulest assassin of all is he who cravenly assassinates reputation. The hand of greed should be thrust out of the consumer's sugar bowl. This thing firmly resolve—not to be careless with fire in any forest reserve. It is complained that the people consume too little of the produce of the farms. This is to the detriment of the people, too. The most nutritious of all foods come from the farms. Outdoor life is a Godsend—literally a gift of God, in this glorious state, where climate and scenery and accessible roads blend to invite and persuade men, women and children to remain much in the open. Write a California boost letter frequently to some relative or friend living beyond the bounds of this state. Put them so much in love with California that they can not resist the temptation to come. Other deaths undoubtedly will For it is beyond human endurance to seventy, eighty or ninety hours continue By some dispensation of Nature, some may vive this jazzy experience. But it will be obvious to all and doubtless fatal to many. The West is discouraging this non-fad. Police authorities of several cities placed inhibitory ban upon this perilous oralizing practice. It should be abolished where. Boys and girls should not come to the demoralizing influence of such things young should not feel that the road to far along such paths as this. It is deplorable so much publicity is given these freakations. If the police authorities ever would interpose and if the sensational news would desist from exploiting these fears craze soon would die out. GOOD SPELLING IS FINE ACCOMPLISHMENT A lass named Florence Treder has written title of spelling queen of Cook outside of Chicago. She spelled correct words out of 95 in a test. The four words were to much for her were: Excescension terious, idiosyncrasy and charivari. The 91 were equally as difficult. But memory queer tricks. Spelling should never become a lost glected art. It should be taught with thought in the schools. It is a graceful accomplishment. Letters or manuscripts written all words spelled correctly have a dignity air of distinction well worth cultivating. Simplified spelling has played more o havoc with the spellers of the land. But good spellers are yet to be found, though art is somewhat neglected, even by some ers. MAMMOTH AIRSHIP FOR CROSSING OCEAN A great airship of the Arno-Boerner t being constructed in Holland. This giant craft is designed to fly across the Atlantic. Write a California boost letter frequently to some relative or friend living beyond the bounds of this state. Put them so much in love with California that they can not resist the temptation to come. American money is to be used in Turkey to finance railroad building and is a novelty and has aroused Europe. But why should not American capital develop that field? European investors have no patent rights there. There is sorrow, and disappointment and bereavement on every hand. But it is a good old world nevertheless. Much of the sorrow is man-made. In the fulness of time men will be more brotherly toward each other. The selling of titles proceeds, in European countries. The time is coming when there will be no more titles—when all men will be commoners, and when every man of sense will be proud that he is a commoner. The Oregon man who paid debts of twenty years standing in Cincinnati—debts which he would have evaded—set an excellent example of honesty, square dealing. The man who deliberately repudiates an honest debt is not honest. The West is ripe for additional reclamation land. The tide of migration is flowing romantically in this direction. Home-makers by the hills are coming to this section. There is still reclaimed lands upon which to settle. The country should know the whole truth of the war situation. If conscienceless greed is the speculative hands upon this staple, the people should know it. And knowing it, they must insist upon relief from the predacious nature of profiteers. NEW YORK LETTER BY LUCY JEANNE PRICE New York, April 24. It was a particularly mistake that a young Yonkers woman had regards Judge Charles Boots the other day, and one is supposed to speak carefully in admiring a judge. She described her mother and helpless" and upon further quest revealed the fact that the venerable woman reached the tragic age of 42. Attoried at the court looked apprehensively at the grill and then at the grill. And then Judge Boots gave an official ruling, "Forty-three is old nor helpless," he decreed, "I am dead." Commissioner Gallatin, who tries to pre-grade grassy banks on either side of our Park auto roads is willing to be sympathetic with the frills and follies of life, but his home first in his heart. "I'm no killjoy," announces in a plea for more careful motor driving. MAMMOTH AIRSHIP FOR CROSSING OCEAN A great airship of the Arno-Boerner type being constructed in Holland. This giant craft is designed to ply across the Atlantic is expected to make speed of seventy miles hour and has a flying radius of 4000 miles the matter of safety, the type of aerial vessel said to be superior. The coming of vast fleets of airships, to regular commercial trips across the Atlantic and eventually across the Pacific, confirms it to be expected. This development is soon come. All foreign mailsand much expresster, as well as passengers, will be carried swift airships, within a few years, without doubt. Remarkable advancement has made, during the last few years, in condition of aircraft and in safety betterments. WHIPPING PRISONERS SHAMEFUL The peonage system of Florida is outrageous. The scandalous expose of the beating of prisoners until he died of his hurts has branched on an official investigation and has sown disgrace all over the country. Florida owes it to its own good name, as to common humanity, to abolish the prying boss in its prison camps. Applying the lash to human beings is out of keeping ideals of the twentieth century. No such families should prevail anywhere under theican Flag. Now that exposure has come of the outlaw Florida, it confidently may be expected the Legislature, the courts and the exe officers of that state will work together to end to this evil. TOWN IN REVIEW Uncle Sam has indicted 92 Texas oil potters, which will give California oil sharks many more suckers to operate on. "I believe in a cheering glass and a companion in a proper surrounding, but a not in a proper surrounding when a man is driving a high powered car." York City does not hesitate in adopting, only any of America's children as her children she shows themselves to be the kind she thinks should belong to her by genius. Let a poet spring in the Kennethians—it is only a matter of months that is claiming him and lauding him him. No writer of this day has seemed to the soil of the Middle West than Zona and yet one week after "Miss Lulu Bett" produced on a Broadway stage, it was "Our name" in the literary haunts of this city, New York. This is undoubtedly one reason for York has risen to proclaim. "Faint her latest book, with greater enthusiasm, it did any of her earlier ones. She was a New Yorker" when she wrote the book. She probably doesn't consider herself but don't let her dare to say so in the of our island! Five big editions of the five weeks! Of course she is one of the book is quite worth the enthusiasm brushing city has done well to appreciate in the story of two fine minds tuned to the theme of understanding and sympathy, and the nuance of it is as pervasive and delicate as the title, with the subtle irony of which Miss Caleb is master preventing its romance from ever verging on the saccharine. I wonder of a 'real' New Yorker could have written it! Five hundred dollars a month for a reading on and library to be used only occasionally is like a good rent, even in these days of live apartments. According to Miss Murcarp, that is what Glendenin J. Ryan, son of Thomas F. Ryan, the financier promised to the use of her library. She was to maincoordination at Fifty-first street and Madte, she claims, so that he might enterlibrary from time to time. She gave total roof on Long Island in order at library for him, she declares, provident of the $569 a month is solar him for payment. Bill Bryan writes a letter urging school W. Coincidence is such a strange thing. We stopped at the same hotel. I was directly behind them. When they registered. Clerks are so curious. One should never be afraid of telling a I wasn't. PARAGRAPHS (By Robert Quillen) Let me live in a house by the side of the road and sell gasoline to man. Even those who travel the strait and narrow way detour at intervals. A good man forces his way ahead almost anywhere except in a catereria line. Archaeology teaches us that there are rewards in unlikely places for those who will dig. A good paint job can hide the mark of time but it won't change the chassis. Another good sanity test is the possession of a car that is capable of making eighty miles an hour. It isn't good luck to pick up a horseshoe, however, if a new casing does the picking. The modern widow may be weeping because she misses him, or she may be weeping because she didn't miss him.
