LESSER OF 2 EVILS TO FACE WILLARD (By DAVIS J. WALSH) (L. N. S. Sports Editor) NEW YORK, April 24.—Being distinctly the lesser of two evils, Floyd Johnson, packing the punch of milady's powder puff, will go on against Jess Willard in the feature bout of the milk fund show, as the result of gaining an unofficial decision over Funny Fred Fulton, at the Jersey City armory last night. A jury of boxing critics representing five New York newspapers, voted unanimously that Johnson won easily. He did. But what they neglected to mention was the fact that if Johnson had the punch of a welterweight or Fulton anything but the heart of a gazelle, the fight never would have gone the limit of 20 bar-room rounds. In our labored way, we are attempting to convey the thought that the principals were and are a couple of tramps, but words fail us. They out-trap the field. Johnson, a fighting a rushing, rapid-fire battle from the first, dropped Fulton with a left hook to the head in the opening round and although he hit Frederick on the fran- tle jaw of his with everything except his foot throughout the remainder of the fight, the plasterer never again forsook the perpendicular. A clean, man-sized wallop in the first, third, fourth, seventh, tenth or eleventh rounds would have finished Fulton, but Johnson just did not have it. So much for Johnson. As for Funny Fred, he was the usual metho- cical cautious, slow moving picture of other days. Jess Willard still stand way and it's a 2 to 1 bet is any ways near his ability that Young Johnson to wait several moons before a crack at the championship. It was a real light card from curtain raiser to the windup. Young Herman of Santa Ana and Big Chief Modena started the fireworks or rather Young Herman did. The Big Chief did not get started until the last half of the second round, by which time Herman had piled up a long lead. Once started the Big Chief was a bad injun. At the close of the hostilities the Chief had Herman completely out on his feet but could not floor the Santa Ana boy. This was sure some battle. Eddie Deolis into one of Eddie Bensous heavy ones right off the real and Mr. Doelis was soon rocked to sleep. Vaughn Young and Spark Plug Newbar furnished the comedy of the evening; Sparky is a grand old war horse and knows more than Mr. Young will ever know but youth outlasted age and so Sparky went down to glorious defeat. In the very first round both Sparky and Vaughn scored a clean knock down at the same time. Sparky gave Young a very neat lesson in boxing till the last part of the third when Sparky ran out of steam and allowed the very tired Young to connect for a knuckle-down. The old man could not recuperate in the minutes rest and was off his feet in the first seconds of the fourth. Darnley stopped the fight to save Sparky father punishment. Tobby Montoya and Freddie Klangge a fast little man from Pasadena furnished the speed event of the evening. Tobby won all the way but knew that he had been in a very fast scrap. Klangge was just able to keep his pins under him during the last round. Battling Doty took the beating that Young Terry had stored up for Billy Maxwell. Terry is too strong for Doty. Doty can keep even on points to long as he can stand Terry's terrific punches. Terry put Doty out for keeps in the third. The main event was a fight all the way. Leo Matlock is a fighting fool, but he was very lucky to get a draw out of last night's encounter with Blackie Rice. The Black Panther injured his good right hand in the first round and with this handicap held the white boy even, in fact a hair splitting decision would have found the black boy on top. Both boys had to back off on several occasions and both found it very necessary to hang on at time until the stars quit dancing. This was a terrific battle and each boy took enough punishment to entitle them to a fortune. There was just a fair house to greet this excellent card. Floyd Johnson's stock as a world's champion hope did not raise with his showing of yesterday against Fred Fulton. Young Johnson will have to speed up considerable if he expects to make a fight with Dempsey. Jess Willard still stands in Floyd's way and it's a 2 to 1 bet. If old Jess is any ways near his championship ability that Young Johnson will have to wait several moons before he gets a crack at the championship. If Fulton's superior weight tired Johnson what will the man mountain do? We are entirely up in the air as to Willard's ability. He was once the world's champion, but like Dempsey, Jess was champion when there were few good, honest to goodness, heavyweights. Surely the years have had some affect on Jess, but his great weight and strength may enable him to beat the present unripe but most logical contender of the young fighters, Floyd Johnson. Press agented as the peer of all mentalists, this much discussed American Indian came up to all expectations and thrilled and startled his audience by turns. Introduced by the Princess Parillo, a soft voiced Indian maid whose palehitude might well be envy of many American girl. Brookhart went into a detailed explanation of a deck of cards. He told of their origin and their various meanings. He then had his assistant pass through the audience allowing his auditors to select any card they cared to from the deck. He then proceeded to call the card in the order in which they had been selected, read the mind of the holder of the card called and answered the question right off the bat. His answers rang true, and the starfishing exactness with which he told local people things of vital interest to them along sent United patrons away amazed. Brookhart foretells a greater world war in 1930 and he bases this prophecy on the writings of St. John in the 13th chapter of Revelations in the Holy Bible. This mental wizard claims that he has learned through a close study of camp met nomenation that the figure 13 has played a most important part in all of the great events of the world.
