HELD ON CHARGE OF EMBEZZLEMENT E. R. Caverly employed with the local Chaffee Store, was arrested Saturday night by the local police upon a warrant sworn to by J. M. Beasley, manager of the Orange-co-Chaffee stores, charging embezzlement. His ball was fixed at $1,000, and he was held in jail in default of bond. Caverly is alleged to have appropriated Satutoy's receipts, and to have had them in his possession when arrested. He says that he did not mean to appropriate the money, that the Chaffee stores have no safes and that he has been taking the receipts home each night for a year or so for safe keeping. Mr. Beasley said he did not know this. The district attorney said that unless more evidence of the man's intention to appropriate the money was brot to the surface, the case would be dismissed. Beasley is in conference with the district attorney this afternoon. He said the charge of embezzlement would be changed, but did not know what charge would be instituted. Staff Correspondent LUSANNE, April 23.—“The only purpose of American participation in the Near East peace conference is to defend American citizens interests and further the principle of the open door,” said Joseph C. Grew, American minister to Switzerland and head of the American delegation of observers at the formal session of the parley this afternoon. A quarrel over the oil and railway concessions granted by the Turks to the Ottoman-American development threatened to put serious obstacles in the path of the Near East peace when the conference was resumed. This is a continuation of the Near East peace deliberations broken off in January. The first business session adjourned at 5:30 o'clock after appointing three committees, political, financial-and economiael. 2 CARS IN COLLISION A brand new Chevrolet and another car collided yesterday as the former was turning onto the Anaheim-Artesia-blvd from a detour, with disastrous results to the Chevrolet, and some damage to the other car, although no severe injuries were sustained by occupants of either car. Miss Bertha Howland, domestic arts teacher in the San Pedro schools, was returning from Fullerton, accompanied by her mother, Mrs. Mary Howland, and was on the way to Hollywood, her home, from a visit with a daughter in Fullerton. As Miss Howland, an experienced driver, turned into the boulevard, C. A. O'Connor, of Wilmington, coming from Cypress, collided with the Chevrolet, breaking the axle, damaging the fender and running board and wrecking the body of the car. His car was slightly less damaged, and it was with difficulty the two cars were taken apart. Mr. O'Connor assumed all responsibility, as he was blinded by the sun. Neither of the passengers in his car saw the approaching Chevrolet. The "Hoo-Hoo" Club of So. Calif., which is a lumbermen's organization, banqueted Saturday evening at the Elks Club. Rainey, of Anaheim, injured Saturday when the car skidded over a 50-foot embankment into the Santa Ana river above Sulphur Slide, there being no bannisters at that point to prevent the accident, were all improved today. The whole party was rendered unconscious for a time, but were revived by the water and the women screamed. Vern Adams, 19, of Corona, helped Ralny to get the women out of the wreckage, and haled a passing stage to take them to the Corona hospital, where it was found that Mrs. Post has suffered a wrenched back, Mr. Rainey a bump on the head, and Miss Post several broken bones. Mrs. Post and Mr. Rainey were able to return to Anaheim but Miss Post is still in the Corona hospital. At the Post residence it was said last reports from Corona were that she was resting well.
