DAILY GREETINGS TO OUR READERS
There came a voice from heavenly heights:
"Unclose thine eyes and see—
Gifts to the last of those I love
Thou givest unto me."
—Rose Terry Cooke.
The political complexion of the United States never should be soviettic red.

Prosperity is so general and so generous, here in California, they pick it off the fruit trees.
Now that the baseball season is open, the death rate among grandmothers of office boys is startlingly high.
The Panama Canal should be made impregnable, and kept so, so long as formidable defenses are necessary for the safety of this nation.
With more than 14,000 deaths from automobiles in traffic, annually, in the United States, the imperative need is seen of revising the fatality list downward.
Some of those girls who try to dance fifty houses or more, continuously, for a record, would find it a hardship to walk a block for mother, to do an errand.
Citizenship imposes solemn obligations. It is not a thing to be treated lightly and flippantly. It is a responsibility that should be shouldered with dignity.
Some men do not get their stride in life until they fail a few times. To a man of pluck and persistence a failure now and then only serves as inspiration and accelerator.
Dealing with immigration calls for statesmanly skill of high order. There are many angles to this question—many considerations of equity and safety to be weighed.
At the same time that the major league baseball season opened, the game of finding Clara Phillips also reopened. The American people must have their pastimes.
STOP DANCE MARATHON
Why are not those life-endangering exhibitions of Marathon dancing by the stopped by the police? Any other form menace would be ended abruptly. Let attempt to jump from a high building or and the police would interfere to prevent suicide. And yet the Marathon dance of suicide. For as the hours lengthen durance tests, some are sure to die from tion and over-exertion of heart.
Any display of lunacy is subject to of the person making the display. Sueraze to dance an unreasonable number continuously is a form of lunacy, and not stopped, on general principles. A child lice in a Connecticut town did stop an e but only after spectators had complain inhumanity.
It is to the credit of Los Angeles and large cities of the west that they are this perilous folly before it starts. And the credit of western girls that they are dulging or seeking to indulge in this suilliness.
CRIME PREVALENCE GROWING LESS
There is a steady subsidence of w crime in the United tSates, according to J. Burna, chief of the Bureau of Invest Department of Justice, and world fam detective. Mr. Burna speaks of the "staring fires of radicalism," which he says is "stamped out," and after this menace —which is greater than the public susp says—he expects to see "a comparatively free era ushered into the United States.

The greatest satisfaction one gets out of life after all is in dealing justly and kindly with all men, and in doing that which adds to the sum total of human happiness and good.
If the Near East would sheathe its bloody scimitars and take out its husbandmanly scythes and get to work, the situation in that quarter of the world would improve quickly.
The United States should concern itself with fostering of world peace. In whatever effective, unobjectionable manner this nation may lead, it should exert its influential leadership.
Since President Harding's return to Washington, the correspondents and the politicians have condescended to permit Mr. Harding to have something to say and to do in determining his future political course.
Adversities and misfortunes and losses, if rightly received, mellow and sweeten character. One does not round out character unless and until one passes through the crucible of sorrows and reverses.
Plans for raising funds to build the American Legion Memorial, which also will house the G. A. R. and Spanish-American War Veterans, are proceeding energetically. An influential Citizens' Committee of 200 is going to the people with the message of patriotism, to urge prompt and generous response to this building fund. Pasadena should "go over the top" handsomely for this very worthy enterprise.
Pasadena's City Plan is furthered by the action of the board of directors of the Chamber of Commerce in approving the report of a special investigating committee of the chamber in which report recommendation was made that a municipal bond issue of approximately $3,250,000, for carrying out the purposes of the City Planning Commission, be submitted to the voters. Influential and representative support is coming to the City Plan. Its feasibility and its tremendous benefits appeal favorably to the people.
TIME RECORD DANCING IS FOOLISH
A new form of idiocy has broken out. The Marathon dance is engrossing the attention of a number of persons who have some gumption in their feet than in their heads. A New York girl danced fifty hours continuously. This set the ball rolling. In Cleveland another girl started in to break the marathon record—and she did, going more than fifty-two hours.
Of what use is all this? If a girl were required by her mother, to work for an hour in the kitchen—a girl of this dancing type would have a conition fit, no doubt, and might threaten—which is greater than the public assures says—he expects to see "a comparatively free era ushered into the United States."

FLOODS TO BE A MEN
Flood news comes from different quick frequent intervals. There is no season year immune to floods all over the United States. Flood losses every year are considerable years the losses are huge. These loss continue to come, with distressing frequency, so long as streams subject flows are left uncontrolled.
The solution of the flood problem ever—the only real solution—lies in scientific control of floods. Damming of streams; limiting of flood waters; control of the flowers and creeks; use of impounded water irrigation; utilization of dams to generate electric power—these things are indicate wise, effectual remedy for flood damage this rational, conservational process, no are the destructive features of floods needed, but the freshets are turned into blessings, bestowing immense material upon wide regions.

But this type of girl is ready and eager to endanger her health and life and make a silly show of herself by trying for Marathon dancing records.
The Board of Aldermen of New York City passed an ordinance prohibiting "human flies" from engaging in dangerous climbing of walls of high buildings. This is a form of male idolcy that should be prohibited. By the same token the Marathon dancer of either sex should be restrained by law from indulging in the foolish hazardous of long-time dancing.

RENOMINATION SOUGHT FOR MR. HARDING
His political friends are predicting that President Harding will be renominated in 1924, without serious opposition. That Mr. Harding's name will be presented and that an active contest for his renomination will be waged, seem to be forgone conclusions.
There may be formidable opposition in the Republican National Convention to Mr. Harding's renomination. This depends upon future developments. Should Mr. Harding however, show desire to make the race again, his candidacy would be hard to beat in the national convention. Party traditions are strong for renomination. This rule has not al-
UNIQUE DANCE FOR YOUNG INDIAN GIRLS
WASHINGTON, April 20.—Aristocratic modern society, with its "coming out" parties for debutantes, has nothing on the Washoe Indians of Nevada, who have a unique dance given to every young girl of the tribe publicly announcing that she is ready for marriage, according to a report received by Secretary of the Interior Work from the Superintendent of the Reno Indian reservation in Nevada.
The dance or ceremony is called "the girl's dances" and the girl who is the central figure eats nothing for a period of four days. On the fourth night the dance is held, beginning at 8 o'clock in the evening and continuing until sunrise the following morning. It consists of the Indians joining hands in a circle and moving sidewise by short dance steps around the ring, humming a sort of chant without words of meaning. The girl, accompanied by some older woman, evidently a chaperon, carries a long staff to support her because of her weakness through the loss of food during her fast, weaves in and out of the dance, joining in the steps.
As the dance proceeds late into the night the family of the girl give money and other possessions to the dancers to keep them moving and to induce others to join in the dance, the geratest number of dancers signifying the popularity of the family. Shortly after midnight a big fear is given by the girl's relatives, all present participating.
The ceremony closes at sunrise, when the girl is taken inside of her tepee and attired in bunches of sage-bursh in which money is hidden. She appears later before the assembled dancers and throws the money to them amid a wild scramble. A can of water is then dashed over her head concluding the ceremony, after which she is ready to receive a proposal of marriage.

Leave it to the efficiency engineers. One of them was asked recently, what potential energy is represented by one million pairs of jaws chewing gum. The answer was, “Off-hand and without a series of tests with the proper measuring instruments, I should say there is enough energy expended daily in New York in the gum chewing art to run all the taxicabs, modify the Volstead Act, clean streets, keep people off the grass in the parks and prevent careless pedestrians from running down timid automobiles. But what of it? It's an energy that can't be put to any use but that it is now employed in.” It is something to think about and I wait with silent jaw.
A great deal is said about reforming criminals. The reformation could be helped along by making laws against crime suitably severe and by making conviction and penalizing swift and sure. Certainty of severe punishment would reform many a person criminally inclined. The reform of fear is not the highest type of reformation. But there is a certain desperate element that will yield to no other kind of reform except that which is forced upon them by wholesome ear of rigorous punishment.
