MARINE BRINGS IN 3500-BARREL WELL With Oil Operators The Marine Oil Corp. is the new producer of the Long Beach field with a 3500 barrel well completed at a depth of 4150 feet on location No. 4. This well had formerly been a producer, but redrilled and deepened to the lower zone it takes a place among the big producers of the beach field. The Marine Oil Corp. operations are now under the supervision of E.J. McAdams a drilling contractor who has earned an enviable record for his successful completion of oil wells. Joseph Dabney continues to hold his own with the oil producers of Long Beach. In addition to a nice production that he has been steadily building up since he centered the field, Mr. Dabney completed a 2100 barrel well at No. 18. The new producer went to 4225 feet and started off with a 20 gravity product. The General Petroleum Corp. is about to bring in a new well on the Black-Drake property that will no doubt be a record producer. Black-Drake No. 2 is located near the ill-fated No. that painted a large part of the ong Beach oil field landscape with oil a year ago. Drilling on Black-Drake 2 has passed the 4600 mark and the well is showing up splendidly. The Long Stat Oil Co.'s well at Long Beach has been watched with considerable interest for some time on account of it being one of the test wells of the southwest section. Drilling stopped a few days ago and a string of casing set at 4275, the of the Long Beach oil field landscape bottom of the hole being at 4500. The bottom formation showed sand and shale and the showings were sufficient to warrant the prediction of a commercial producer. The Cal-Mex Oil and Refining Co. No. 1 reddrilled and deepened to 3297 is back on production a 650 barrel well. The renewed producer is making 23.5 gravity oil and will probably hold up much better to its original output. Production figures on Long Beach do not tell the real story of the field. Many of the larger companies have DENIES RUSSIA AT WAR WITH CHURCHES (By Karl M. Elish) BERLIN, April 18—Mason Day, head of the Barnsdall Corp., an American company, just returned from Russia, where he obtained oil concessions, denied today that the Soviet government is conducting war against religion. "Father Buttkiewicz, Catholic prelate, was put to death not on religious grounds. It was proved that he had carried on Polish propaganda tending to disrupt the home front. "I visited the principal churches in Moscow at Eastertide. Not only were the churches jailed with worshipers but the streets outside were also. People carried candles and chanted prayers. No one interfered." Buena Park News BUENA PARK, April 16. (Spl.)—The birthday of Mr. A.C.Mann was celebrated with a picnic at Brookside Park on Sunday. It is common practice to bring in wells running all the way from 5 to 10 thousand barrels. Machris Bros. led the producers of the Springs district with a redrilled well, the Bandiño off at 4500 barrels. The Off producer was re-compiled at 4650 feet, and the new well is making 35 gravity oil. The Off well will offset some of the misfortunes the Machris Bros have had in the Springs field. The top notch producer of the week at Santa Fe Springs was completed by the General Petroleum Corporation on the Santa Fe property. Santa Fe No. 8 completed at 4700 feet started off with an initial production of 7500 barrels. Jalk No. 5 formerly listed under the Springs division producers but now known as Jalk No. 5 was drilled to 4720 feet and came in at the rate of 5500 barrels. Both wells are making the usual high gravity product, 35. That the Standard Oil Co.'s Walter property is one of the choice leases of the field was proven a few days ago by the fact that Walker Not completed at 4450 feet came in 5725 barrel well. The Union Oil Company moved up into the class of big producers, with a 6600 barrel well on the Bell property. Bell No. 4 is the star well of the Union now. A remarkable fact in connection with the big well is the fact that the drill penetrated only well is making 35.3 gravity oil. Bell No. 1 it will be remembered went only 7 feet into the oil sand and started off at 4500 barrels, later going up to 6000. Bell No. 9 completed at 4219 feet made a production test that showed the well had a capacity of 4500 barrels. The line and outside drilling operations at Santa Fe Springs continue to carry considerable interest. The Brady 8 Well Syndicate No. 4 drilling at close to 4900 feet is looking up with some promise. Kelly and Harold R. Harris are receiving congratulations for their record achievements of yesterday and last night. MacReady and Kelly, who started their world endurance flight Monday morning at 9:40 landed last night at 9:43, after being in the air for 36 hours and five minutes and covering a distance of 2,516 18 miles. Lieutenant Harris meanwhile was clipping off the miles at an average hourly speed of 114 miles for 11 hours. He broke existing records for 1500 and 2,000 kilometers. Lieutenant Rutledge Irvine, Anacostia station, Washington, D.C., set a deadweight carrying record in a Dayton Wright naval plane of recent build. This flight lasted two and a half hours and convinced even the most skeptical of the stability of his ship. The plane was loaded with a 1600 pound torpedo and 600 pounds of shot making the total weight of the plane with the pilot and observer six thousand pounds. Bell No. 9 completed at 4219 feet made a production test that showed the well had a capacity of 1500 barrels. The line and outside drilling operations at Santa Fe Springs continue to carry considerable interest. The Brady 8 Well Syndicate No. 1 drilling at close to 4500 feet is looking up with some promise. Drilling is in sandy shale, and it is believed now that in the next 100 feet the sandy shale will shuffle off into the oil sand. Ferdon and Vurpillat have temporarily suspended operations on the Oil and Land Syndicate well No. 1 to await field developments on the northeast section of the field. The Gilbert Petroleum Company is scheduled to bring in the next well south of Hamilton 4. Drilling has passed the 5000 mark and there have already been showings sufficient to warrant the bringing in of a commercial producer. The core samples are showing sandy shale streaked. South of the Co-Op Petroleum's deep test well on the Norwalk road the Stewart-Anderson Corp. has suspended operations and will await field developments. The Coop Petroleum Syndicate No. 1 now has the honor of being the deepest test well drilling in the extreme south section of the field. Drilling is now at 5200 feet and the showings are neither encouraging or discouraging. The north side of the Springs field is patiently awaiting the verdict of the Standard Oil Co.'s Brownrigg-Keller No. 2. Drilling is close to 5800 feet and to date there has been nothing that warrant even the prediction of a barrel of oil. The Shell Co.'s Shayden No. 1 on which the outcome of the northwest section of the field will probably be decided is down close to 5000 feet. A string of 6-1-4 was set at 4800 feet, not on account of any showings, but insure safety in the drilling procedure. The White Star Oil Co. is now rated among the big producers of Santa Fe Springs with a real oil well. The York-Smullin Drilling Company completed at 4600 feet a 7000 barrel well producing 24 gravity oil. It is understood that this is just beginning of the big things the White Star Oil company has on its Springs program. The company is fortunate in having the services of W S Smullin and Victor York old Standard Oil heads to develop its properties. sv3.1'nupjfm!*!6...NUP SHRD P YL NEW PAVING ON WHITTIER-L. A. BLVD. The Globe's producer was completed at 5052 feet and is making the high gravity product that now characterizes the deep production of Huntington Beach. Eclipsing oil world records for deep production the Selby Root Oil Co. has a producer at 5120 feet. The record well is located on the curved property and is one of the choice completion of Neal Anderson. While not a big well, it being a 500 barrel producer it sets a new record for deep production, drilling and proves that no well is a test well in the So. Calif. field unless it goes to 5400 or 5500 feet. The Invaders Oil Co. one of the smaller companies that has had about all the difficulties the oil operator has to contend with now has a 1500 barrel well. The Invaders Oil Co. finished a well on the Mills property at 4408 and secured a 28 gravity producer. The new Torrance oil field came in for something worth while a few days ago when the Standard Oil Co. completed the first real big well of the district. On the Torrance Community property the Standard No. 3 at 3805 came in an 850 barrel well producing 26 gravity oil. This is the biggest well of the Field and seems to point to the fact that the operators are just beginning to get a line on the field and in the near future some big developments may be expected at Torrance. Th Hub Oil Co. Smith No. 1 at 3280 feet got a nice showing of oil and the showings are continuing as the drilling advances. The Union Oil Co. Western well one of the outlying test wells of the Torrance field has passed the 4200 foot park and today has not shown anything particularly encouraging. Delfflower is scheduled to go either on or off the petroleum map of So. Calif., soon At 3865 feet the hole has been reamed to bottom where a string of 8% will be landed. On the drilling out of the cement and going ahead afterwards will show what is there zoom. There have been some encouraging showings and the outlook for the field has been on the whole father optimistic. At La Habra the La Habra Midway Oil Co. is considering its next move. Some 5280 feet of hole has been made, and the showings are not sufficient to warrant the continuance of drilling. One thing is certain about the operations of the La Habra Midway, the stockholders money was going to get around by putting hole making and a NEW PAVING ON WHITTIER-L. A. BLVD. Whittier boulevard probably will be improved between the Los Angeles city limits and Whittier with a pavement 56 feet wide, Nelson T. Edwards, former supervisor and now a member of the State Highway Commission, indicated today in a telephone interview, Edwards, whose home is in Orange, today made an informal call on the board of supervisors. The commission has offered to pay for a width of 28 feet all the way to the Orange-co line, if the Los Angeles board of supervisors will pay the other 28 feet. The latter has indicated its willingness to do so, at least as Whittier. Regarding the recommendations of the Committee of Fifteen, representing So. Cal., Edwards declared they were entirely fair. Thirteen southern counties are represented on this committee, which seeks to have the alliment of highway monies to So. Cal. apportioned on the basis of the original budget. Whether the northern members of the commission, however, will agree to this is another question. This the commission will discuss at a meeting in San Francisco, opening Monday. Another matter to come up is the improvement of the two county links of the coast highway. Edwards confirmed the report already published in the Plain Dealer that the two links, even if graded, would be allowed to stand for perhaps two years without being paved, in order to get "set". This is because they follow new routes. Edwards, of course, cannot force shadow what the commission as a whole will do, however. The audit of funds available for work has been made, and the commission now can at last begin work, said Edwards. In general, it will be the contracting company has on its Springs program. The company is fortunate in having the services of W S Smulliin and Victor York old Standard Oil heads to develop its properties. sv3.1'nupjfm;!*6...NUP SHRD P YL At La Habra the La Habra Midway Oil Co. is considering its next move. Some 5280 feet of hole has been made, and the showings are not sufficient to warrant the continuance of drilling. One thing is certain about the operations of the La Habra Midway, the stockholders money was used for actual hole making and arable tool record was made that would be a credit to any operator in the California field. At Montebello the Union's La Merced No. 23 the deep test well that found the new sand for the field holds all the interest. Progress was made in the getting of an O. K. on the casing test. There is every reason to believe that a successful water shut off has been accomplished and the well that will rejuvenate the old Montebello field will go right on into the oil sands and open up something new and undreamed of at Montebello. The Arcadia Oil Co., test well on the northeast section of the field is making a nice drilling record. The well is now down close to 4000 feet where the formation is running in sandy shale streaked with shell. At Richfield the well of the hour is the Standard Oil Company's Kraemer 1-15A. Drilled to 5247 feet, the deep well is scheduled to prove the long erentreversy as to whether the north and the Rienfeld district has a deep sand or not. It is believed that the Standard's test well will make a small producer. At La Mirada the Standard Oil Company is satisfied that the district is not oil bearing and is making preparations to abandon the deep test McNally 2-1 well at 5706 feet. Careful drilling and the taking of frequent core samples failed to show even a trace of oil. The Seal Beach Oil Co. is preparing to set casing at 4625 and will be in a position to test out any deep showings the well may exhibit. Akin, Chairman of the Legislative Committee, will give an outline of the work of his committee, and there will be many other features well worthy of mention. "The only way to really understand what is going on is to go and see for yourself", declares Harrove. Any realtor that will go is requested to notify Harrove as early as possible. There will be ears going from Anaheim, and it would be a good chance for Anaheim to go over and invite the bunch to the Orange Show in an impressive way. Harrove is on the program for a speech, and he guarantees that he will not overlook dropping a word for Anaheim's Orange Show. CALIFORNIA HOTEL: FULLERTON H. W. Truesdell, Rosemead; C. A.
