THE ORANGE COUNTY PLAIN DEALER An Independent Newspaper, Issued Every Afternoon Except Sunday Paul V. Hester, Editor & Pub. Lotus H. Louden, Adv. Manager DAILY GREETINGS TO OUR READERS We offer Thee nor life nor death; Our gifts to man we give; Dear Lord, on this Thy day of birth, Oh, what dost Thou receive? Rose Terry Cooke. The California Legislature is making haste very slowly. The Pacific Fleet is always welcome in California waters. There is no companion more smoothing than a clear conscience. Sugar prices should not be at the mercy of speculative gamblers. Necessaries of life should be freed from the greedy hands of speculators. Honesty and just dealing are among the fairest flowers in the field of virtues. The Presidential boom that is launched this early runs risk of having a tempestous voyage ere 1924. California should come clean of illiteracy before 1930. The next census should show "white" as to literacy here. Radio has developed into wonders. But the future will bring achievements compared with which the radio records of today would be tame and featureless indeed. Record breaking number of hotel reservations in Pasadena for next season is reported by D. M. Linnard. Pasadena's popularity with tourists and winter residents has not waned. This Legislature should not adjourn without providing ways and means for reforming criminal court procedure in California so as to simplify court processes, minimize mistake and hasten the course of justice. The population of California is increasing about 100,000 annually. But this does not stop enthusiastic boosters of certain California cities from claiming 150,000 gain in population annually for their city alone. CALIFORNIA IS VICTORY DEVELOPMENT California, in its modernized allied development, is comparatively new state. Days of statehood interest was central gold mining, upon farming the grass and in such commerce as naturally yield to and go from this section. The era of intensive development and horticulture; the era of manufacturing; the era of upbuilding and towns and instituting of great progress is of recent beginning. This major developmental progress of this state is remarkable. California is essentially this intensified modern development. What the last three decades have in development of this nature the new cades doubtless will far outrival. For operation is cumulative. California is inherently in the eyes of the world today before. Its advantages are better opportunities are better understood and lated. * The United States, a world power, possibility toward the rest of the world it should not evade. In meeting the abilities it is not required that this volve itself in the purely domestic Europe or any other part of the worldwide political entanglement abroad States could and should be of good to the world in leading it into the peace. ANTI-AIRCRAFT DELIVERY VERY STRONG Much ado is made, in military civilians the importance of air craft in warfare based upon the prominent part militia played in the World War. It is re- have official word from the War that the United States is keeping pace development against hostile aircraft fences of the United States in this are said to be adequate. The ordinance, const artillery and advances in defensive preparations satisfactory. Despite the progress aviation, the ways and means of bensive aircraft are fully remarkable. Anti aircraft gunnery is well done the American War Department. The suring, particularly to the Pacific Ocean which would be menaced from the side of war, if defense were not ample, Record breaking number of noteworthy events in Pasadena for next seasan is reported by D. M. Binding Mexico to California and to the U.S. by bonds of friendship and good will should inure to the benefit of both sides of the international line. It is high time that closer trade relations between the two countries were established. The people should lead themselves, in politics. Submitting supinely to leadership of politicians, many of whom are of doubtful competency and questionable seruples, is not creditable to the people. Substantial increase in pay of employees of the Pacific Electric is pleasing announcement to Pasadena. It means considerable increase in the sum total of wages paid here. It also denotes thriving here and throughout the region served by the Pacific Electric. The benefits which have accrued to women and girls under the minimum wage laws of California and other states should not be lost or abandoned. If necessary, the United States Constitution should be amended to vest in Congress authority to enact minimum wage status. If Dr. Campbell says that the Einstein theory of relativity is corroborated than why it? The average person is inclined to believe almost anything in connection with this theory, particularly anything learned through an eclipse—because of the theory itself and what it means it a total eclipse to the masses. The story of the advancement of science is more thrilling than romance. This is related in the newspaper press as discoveries are made or new feats achieved; and the technical magazines and books set these advantages down in more elaborate and enduring form. Scientific achievements today come so thickly and so fast, they tread upon each other's heels. The West wants to see and to hear Persident Harding, regardless of politics and without concerning themselves about his candid election. It is to be hoped that Mr. Harding will heed the call of the generous benefactor and make his tour as planned, despite the annoying political boosting that some of the President's impulsive friends are giving. The American real roads never before were faced with prospective volume of traffic so huge as is coming to them this year. Enormous sums are being expended upon rush orders for equipment. Strenuous efforts are being made to provide adequate freight carrying facilities for the mammoth crops and for the huge quantities of manufactured commodities which the markets are demanding. A LITTLE TALK ON THRIFT By S. W. Strauss—President American Society for Thrift, NEWSPAPERS IN EVOLUTION Santa Ana, (Cal.) In fifteen years will not only be more expensive will be much smaller in size than the day. They will have fewer readers itsisers, and both will have to pay more they get." Scarcity of paper is given as the reason this prophecy is not necessary its details, in general outline, it is precise enough. The rapid depletion of the pulp for indicates a change in the size of paper some unforeseen material for paper can Heretofore dalles have grown larger. But it does not follow that they will fewer readers and advertisers, or that be any less variety of news and feature public grows steadily and will be able to pay whatever increased cost necessary in the future for so great the daily newspapers render. Likewise business world. As business grows more powerful and population increases naturally business will advertise itself more. And the continually broadening of the public for knowledge of what is in the world, near and far, in a threeferent fields of interest surely will rise. The chances are that there will be difference in handling all these things papers shrink, the things they print will not only in number but in size. New handled more briefly. Editorial content matter will be more terse, will become more pointed and definite less details will be omitted. That deny already. NEW YORK LETTER BY LUCY JEANNE PRICE The American realroads never before were faced with prospective volume of traffic so huge as is coming to them this year. Enormous sums are being expended upon rush orders for equipment. A LITTLE TALK ON THRIFT By S. W. Strauss—President American Society for Thrift To the writer who writes the Mediterranean countries the fact that we are not quite clea at A letter should be more about commercially in these regions. Other nations, notably Great Britain, are getting themselves strongly intrenched in the Near East from the standpoint of trade and commerce. At home we produce so much more than we consume that it is in keeping with national thrift and efficiency that we find outlets for our products wherever possible. The political situation in the Near East is, of course, not yet stabilized, but sooner or later things will settle down, and America should then be in a position to compete with all nations for the rich trade of these lands. One cannot visit these countries, many of which have a civilization as ancient as the oldest document of human history, without being impressed with the fact that the younger generations are adopting a new viewpoint toward us. These people are today weighed down with customs and customs that are entirely out of touch with modern progress. But the young people are becoming imbued with the ideals of Western Europe, and the next few years will have pronounced changes. Weise facts especially impress the American city to Turkey. More than 100 homes are under water, shipping partially halted, and damage already is estimated at thousands of dollars. No signs of the crest are in sight. Several villages in Hardin county, Texas, have been cut off from communication. U. S. Still, there is a lot of good Americanism out in the districts where pa-jamas still are considered rather effeminate. A distinguished jurist says we are becoming a race of drug addicts. Well perhaps that is the most charitable interpretation. The Prince of Wales wasn't the only one. There are numerous royal personages who know how it feels to be thrown from a high horse. In the old days, a man was described as "poor but honest". Now it isn't necessary to press agenth his honesty unless he has a wad. A lot of people think they are democratic just because they have a grudge against people who are rich and people who amount to something.
