UNION HAS HAD 4 WELLS BLOWN OUT
With Oil Operators
With the blowing out of Bell 18,
the Union Oil Co. suffers the loss
of four wells at Santa Fe Springs.
Previous blow outs took place in the
high pressure gas zone at 2500 and
2200 feet. Bell 18 had some 3700
feet of hole drilled and the 10-inch
had been cemented. Water and gas
started to come up around the 10inch casing and for a while looked
like the well would not be endangered.
Now gas and water are shooting
some 75 feet over the top of the rig,
and it appears that the well will
be wrecked. The only thing that will
save the hole and equipment will be
the sanding up of the well.
South line hopes for Santa Fe
Springs was boosted some last week
with the showings the Gilbert Petroleum Company got after leaving
the 4800 foot mark. At 4840 an appreciable showing of oil and gas was noted and at 4865 the showing increased to proportions that seems
to assure an oil well. The Gilbert Petroleum company it seems is going to keep the showings a secret. A fence has been put up around the well and it is necessary to have a search warrant to gain admittance.
C. C. Julian demonstrated his ability to come back when he re-drilled and returned his No. 1 to production at 8100 barrel well. No. 1 was redrilled to 4620 and is flowing 35 gravity oil. Julian I is one of the best wells the famous High Gravity Field has yet produced. No. 4 another good producer is producing steadily at 3500 barrels and has proven one of the conservative and steady producers of the field.
The Russell Petroleum Company stepped into the oil line light late last week with a 4500 barrel well. The Russell Petroleum producer was completed at 4750 feet in the Meyar sand and is producing a 33 gravity product. The Russell Petroleum has plans formulated for the starting of three new wells, and will no doubt
Griffith Tells Why He Made Great Film
How and why D. W. Griffith came to make "One Exciting Night" is one of the theatrical surprises of the season.
In the past, Mr. Griffith has always builted his film stories upon a theme, dramatizing a thought, rather than invoking pure dramatics for his efforts. And the success that has followed has proven the sureness of his truth, and the breadth of his imagination.
When he appeared with a smile to show the world "One Exciting Night," a United Artists release coming tomorrow to the United Theatre, many could not quickly understand why so radical a change in the work of this producer. And here is the answer as Mr. Griffith gives it:
"I wanted to do a mystery story when I did 'Orphans of the Storm.' It was the time for mystery stories, the quick and popular reaction to the melodramas proved that.
"Perhaps this picture appears like a hastily made work. It is the exact opposite. There is no more difficult thing then to put suspense and mystery on the screen. It requires an accuracy of time and a resourcefulness in arranging the scenes that is inestimably more difficult than any straight drama.
"To make the taking of the picture more trying, we did the majority of the 'interior' scenes this summer, when the thermometer often registered under the lights from 104 to 117 degrees.
"The storm scene is the costliest and most difficult single scene I have ever done in pictures. We had as many as three and four hundred workmen preparing for it. The insurance man who was present informed me that the wind storm in which the action is placed represented a ninety mile gale much of the time and a fifty mile gale in the less violent scenes."

The Russell Petroleum producer was completed at 4730 feet in the Meyar sand and is producing a 33 gravity product. The Russell Petroleum has plans formulated for the starting of three new wells, and will no doubt assume a place of prominence among the big oil producers of the Springs field soon.
The Shell company of California has a model oil well in Slusher No. 1. The Slusher well came in three weeks ago at 7000 barrels. The production has steadily increased until now the well is making 8225 barrels. The Shell's Slayden at 5000 feet has recovered from a difficult fishing job and is ready to proceed on the test that will determine much for the future of the northline of the Springs field.
The deepest well of the Springs field is the Standard Oil Co.'s Brew-rigg-Keller No. 2. The drilling is now at 5670 and the outlook for a producer has not improved. Core samples taken in the Brownrigg-Keller deep well at 5550 did not show any only indications. On the Johnson property the Standard completed No. 1 the first producer on the property at 4590 and got a 2000 barrel well. The Johnson well seems to be in the Meyer zone as it is making 35 gravity oil.
The greatest producer the Santa Fe Springs field has yet produced was brought in last week by W. M. Keck. The well is the property of the Superior Oil Company of which W. M. Keck is president and general manager. Completed at or rather re-

The Petroleum Midway's Spencer No. 1 is something of a welcome addition to the north central section of the Springs field. Located in what seemed to be in questionable territory the Spencer well at 4819 feet came thru at 2900 barrel well. The Petroleum Midway plans to carry the Spencer well deeper and has "killed" the producer, Mattern 3-3 at 3885 drilled the cement out and made a flow sufficient to justify the prediction of another big well. Petroleum Midway success at Santa Fe Springs has been quite noticeable. Under the direction of T. J. Crumpton the development department of the Midway has made a remarkable showing.

APPLAUSE-GETHERS AT THE CALIFORNIA
Thursday is sure to be a red letter day among theatergoers when the superb de luxe vaudeville road show, consisting of five wonderful "big time" acts makes their bow before local audiences at the California theater.
Three of these big acts are direct from the Orpheum circuit, and should prove wonderful applause-getters. All are known from coast to coast, and Anaheim can well feel fortunate in viewing them locally. It was arranged only after much preliminary and the guaranteeing of enormous salaries.
The headliner is difficult to select. Probably Whitefield and Ireland in their exorculatingly funny act "Umph'ville" is the most powerful of the combination. This pair are positive comedy riots, and their offering is a scream throughout.
Carlysle and LaMal, another Orpheum topliner, will present their novelty offering entitled "The Entertainer." Here is strictly a first class act, and they are certain to come in for their share of the applause.
The Puppets of 1923, a very pretentious and elaborate Orpheum revue, is something different for jaded appetites. One of the most costly acts ever offered in any theater in this section.
DeLoach and Corbin a dark-town dance and song act that is simply great. You'll have to hold your sides when you view this act. Leo and Chapman have a whirlwind and thrilling comedy athletic presentation that is a knockout.
On the screen you will see Elaine Hammerstein in her latest feature photoplay "Under Oath." She is supported by a splendid cast in the picture, and the critics declare it is great.
Tonight will see the final performances of Ceil DeMille's magnificent 10-reel super-drama "Adam's Rib." A great cast headed by Nilton Sills and Elliott Dexter is featured.

BIG PHOTOPLAYS
A combination of powerful photoplay program seldom seen at the Fairyland theater are scheduled for the next four days. Pictures that ordinarily are featured in the greatest cinema houses of the nation are listed.
The attration for today and tomorrow will be famous Bebe Daniels and Conrad Nagel in their brand new feature "Singed Wings." Friday and Saturday will be the great premier showing of Tom Mix in his newest thriller "Catch My Smoke."
Little need be said in Anaheim about Bebe Daniels. She has a tremendous following here, and her pictures are always greeted with enthusiasm. "Singed Wings" was originally billed for the California, but the prior bookings necessitated a "switch" to the Fairyland.
The premier showing of Tom Mix's picture "Catch My Smoke" will be the first appearance of this popular star in Anaheim for some time past. He is considered among the world's most celebrated stars, and the popu-lace always knows that when a Tom Mix picture is booked, there are certain to be thrills and daring aplenty. This picture is being shown to Anaheim showfolk even ahead of its great Los Angeles showing.
There will be a matinee Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, and the regular evening performances at 7 and 9 o'clock. Regular Fairyland prices will prevail.

The Shell Co. of Calif. broke two records with its big well on the Andrews property at Long Beach. In addition to being the greatest producer the Signal Hill field has yet produced, the Andrews well lowered the world's record for deep production to 5050 feet. The Andrews gusher on actual gauge produced 10,450 barrels of oil in 8 hours. On account of fear of developing sand the well has been pinched down to 6500 barrels. The Andrews well sets a new record for Long Beach in the way of high gravity oil. Heretofore the highest gravity product of the field did not run higher than 28. The Andrews gusher is producing 30 gravity.
Long Beach brought grief to those who had predicted and set the peak of production at 150,000 barrels. Last week the daily output of the field climbed up around 155,000 barrels, and it is believed it will go to 200,000 before the present month closes. New production this past week was added by the California Co-operative Syndicate with a 1500 bbl well at 4414, a 1200 barrel well completed by Joseph Dabney at No. 16 at a depth of 3666 feet; two wells by the Fred B. Foster Company, No. 37 a 400 barrel well and No. 40 a 1500 barrel producer.
A. T. Jergins brought in another of his nice wells when he completed his White No. 4 at 4472 and got a 1500 barrel producer. The Jergins Trust Company has built up a splendid production at Long Beach and has made one of the best individual records of any of the producers of the Beach field.
The Petroleum Midway Co. has put its Fields No. 1 on production. This is the well that began holding the attention of the operators last summer. At the time the well was located it appeared to be in wildcat territory and its drilling was watched with much interest. At 3975 Fields 1 went on production a 1300 barrel well. Some 400 feet of screen pipe was necessary for the taking care of the producing zone.
The United Oil Co. brought in another nice well on the Haas property with the completing of No. 3 at 3720 feet a 1260 barrel producer. The United Bixby is now one of the most northwesterly located wells. The rigging up work is completed and actual drilling is about to start. Should the United get a producer on the Boxby the Long Beach field will get a big extension on extension that

DISCUSS EXECUTION
(By International News Service)
WARSAW, April 4.—The Polish cabinet discussed what stops should be taken regarding the execution of Rev. Father Butkiwitez. Polish prelate of the Roman Catholic church was put to death Saturday by a firing squad at Moscow.
Diplomatic relations with Russia may be severed.
The secrecy maintained about the execution has killed hopes of churchmen that the body can be removed to this country.
Polish officials charge that the Soviet offered to exchange imprisoned prelates for Bolshvist prisoners held in Poland but that the Polish government refused.
