STREET IN STUDIO FOR 'SINGED WINGS'
A short winding cobblestone street, along the sides of which rise equalid bleached buildings, here a tenement and there a greasy, cellulosing retaining art make the waterfront scenes going the San Francisco beachline an unusual and picturesque setting for "Singed Wings." Fenrhyn Stanlaws' production for Paramount, featuring Debe Daniels and Conrad Nagel, at the Fairyland theatre starting tomorrow.
An entire district of the North California city was topped stone for store and brick for brick at the West Coast Paramount Studios for scenes in "Singed Wings." Altho the company traveled to San Francisco to take certain scenes in which San Francisco Bay served for a background, it was necessary to build a replica of the San Francisco waterfront inside the studio.
A sound of sixty decorators, mansions, plasterers, painters, carpenters and other technical employees of the Paramount studios erected the set. Grooked, dirty streets, made more ugly by tin cans, papers and rubbish, rewarded the diligence of the worker. Mosa, springing from the crevices in the buildings and spreading along the sides and roofs, added the touch of age. Paint was stripped from a weatherbeaten shack which leaned peripherally over the water.
CALIFORNIA WOMAN DIES IN LONDON
By International News Service
LONDON, April 2.—Mara May Mellon Bowle, formerly of California and understood to be the wife of an American millionaire, died a lonely traveler in a hotel today.
Papers found in her room indicted she had traveled widely after she left San Francisco two years ago. Since arriving here she kept entirely to herself.
The body was found by her maid, fully garbed in evening dress decorated with resplendent jewels. Mrs. Bowle died sitting in a chair.
SAN FRANCISCO, April 2 — Mrs. May Mellon Bowle, was well known in San Francisco before the fire as Jessie Hayman.
During her thirty years residence here, she amassed a fortune estimated from a quarter of a million to a million, all invested in real estate except $100,000 in diamonds.
She had been on a world tour.
BREA PLANS NEW SCHOOL ADDITION

D.W.GRIFFITH'S
"ONE
EXCITING
NIGHT"
Tempestuous lovers,
one guided by his heart, one by Greed,
seek a girl, young,
sweetly innocent.
Fate hurls them into a House of Mystery as their trysting place.
Peering eyes and creeping figures,
stealthy steps,
all about—Comes the storm, then the Calm—and Love wins.

NEW PLAN AGAINST MOTOR VIOLATORS
G. B. Brown, justice of peace and city recorder, has a plan to make the law against auto violators much more effective. He would have a new form of operator's license with the principal offense marked in it, and each time the law was violated the offense committed would be punched on the license. In this way, the Judge would always have the record of the defendant before him. A record of these offenses would be kept in the motor vehicle department of Sacramento, and any new license issued would be marked or punched at the former one.
He would have a small fine imposed for the first offense, the license revoked for 20 days for the second of offense, and the license revoked permanently for the third offense.
The idea is not original with Judge Brown, but was communicated to him by John L. Breen, an oil producer and Jeep thinker, who has holdings at Yorba Linda, and Judge Brown is planning to take it up with the legal department of the Auto Club of Co. Cal., in an effort to bring it before the state solons.
2 KILLED, 14 TAKEN CAPTIVE AT DUNDALK
(By International News Service)
DUBLIN, April 1.—One Free state soldier and one irregular were killed and 14 irregulars were taken prisoners in fighting near Dundalk National.
Republican irregulars today blew up the Midland Railway bridge just outside of Dublin, preventing thousands of Irish sport lovers from reaching the city to view the Grand national.
Foremost in the Irish turf events.
Ninety-one women prisoners are reported hunger striking.
NEW POLICE CHIEF OFFICIALLY ON JOB
William D. Moody, Anaheim's new chief of police, is in full charge today, succeeding Frank N. Steadman, resigned. Mr. Moody said he might make a lot of mistakes, but they would be honest mistakes. He repeated that if he could fill the bill nearly so well as Mr. Steadman he would think himself fortunate. He said stringent measures would be taken against anyone found driving while intoxicated.
Moody expects to enforce the law with an eye to justice, not persecuting those who are the victims of circumstance, as in the case of those who have application for automobile licenses and have not received them, nor letting those go free whose place is in jail.
L. Whalen takes Moody's place as patrolman and Earl Nickels takes Whalen's place. Another appointment Moody said, would not be announced yet.
HAWKEYE WANTS TO BUY CHICKEN RANCH
A series of questions regarding chicken raising has been received from Dr. Scott Covalt, of Council Bluffs, vice president of the Southwestern Iowa Dental society. He writes to Mrs. Dora Feld, of Cyprus, whose name he secured through a poultry association, stating a desire to leave his Iowa home for California and inquires as to the price of five to seven acres of land for raising green foods, the cost of eggs, average price of eggs throughout the year, day old chicks and pullets, average wholesale and retail price of eggs, building cost of pens, etc.
Anyone in the community choosing to give the information quite as full as he can will confer a favor upon the Iowan and pull an important string for Orange-co.
