FORCED DOWN IN ENDURANCE FLIGHT (By International News Service) DAYTON, O., Mar. 31.—Lieuta John A. MacReady and Oakley Kelly, making an attempt to eclipse the world's endurance flight record, were forced down at 12:05 this morning when their engine developed serious trouble. They had taken off at 4:15 yesterday afternoon. Plain Dealer Want Ads Get Results Silence Feature Of Cleveland Motor "There are numerous refinements incorporated in the Cleveland six motor that are worthy of note, but none stand out more prominently than those features of construction which exert a decided effect in promoting silent operation," say Hubbell & Wimmer, local Cleveland six distributor. "First of all, if a motor is to run smoothly it must have perfect balance. This has been accomplished in the Cleveland power plant by evenly distributed weight. Each piston and connecting rod assembly is accurately weighed to insure a corresponding balance with the other five." "Static balance of the crankshaft, of generous proportions, together with perfect impulses of power generated by six cylinders, also contribute in no small degree toward eliminating vibration." "Inherently a 'six' is more perfectly balanced than a four cylinder motor. The crankshaft of a 'four' must carry the momentum of the engine between the lapsic in power strokes, whereas in a 'six' the explosions overlap. There is always vibration with a 'four' that is impossible to eliminate." "Differing from many motors the Cleveland engine has a crankcase with its bearing seats constructed so that the bearings are mortised into their seats instead of just being bolted to a flat surface. This construction promotes rigidity. It is generally conceded that the lubricating system of a motor goes a long way in making it operate quietly and efficiently. Too much emphasis cannot be brought to bear on the lubrication of the Cleveland motor. It is known as a force feed and splash system. An oil pump located at the bottom of the crank case will pump to the last drop." UNITED Theatre Anaheim Matinee Today 2:30 P.M. F. Velasco a very welcome surprise. The couple arose to the occasion and prepared a three course dinner, which, all of those partaking declared it to be quite "au fait". All the people assembled are very musical, most of them being members of St. Mary's church choir in the city, so all joined in a most beautiful program wherein solos, duets, trios, and quartettos were duly rendered and a most happy time enjoyed by all. When the last number of the impromptu program had been given, it was closer to midnight than any other hour, so hurried adieux were said; and both the guests and host and hostess reluctantly parted. Mrs. Contancia Yorba has been suddenly called to Garvanza, where her brother, Ricardo Vejar, resides, and who is very ill with the flu. Another member of the family is ill with the same malady; Mrs. Eugene Boisserane, a daughter, who is at Perris, and who is being attended by her sister Miss Inez Yorba, who went in lieu of the mother for the reasons given above. At the E. T. Yorba home every one was sick in bed for two weeks with the prevalent epidemic but are now slowly getting over it. Mr. J. F. Velasco attended the morning Palm Sunday service at Colton. Boisserane going to Pullerton, and Willie Sanchez to San Juan Capistrano, for the same purpose. Miss Hermione Bayha is the latest to join the local line of fashionable autolets with a handsome enelope that the bearings are mortised into their seats instead of just being bolted to a flat surface. RECORD With 116,080 Ford cars sold at retail in February, a new record for the shortest month in the year has been established. February sales exceeded those of January by more than 15,000 and marked the eleventh month in which Ford sales have topped the 100,000 line. This sale record bears out predictions made at the opening of the year that an acute shortage in Ford cars is certain, and this shortage is expected to be felt within the next two months with the increased volume of car buying which is always attendant upon the spring month. Even the high production schedule set at the Ford Motor Company's factory here, which will reach 6,000 cars and trucks a day about April 1, will be unable to meet the apparent demand for Ford products. Anticipating a great increase in the demand for Ford cars during the present year the factory here laid plans for increasing production to the 6,000 car a day schedule and since January first had been constantly speeding up manufacture to reach this figure. Demand so far has been of such great proportions as to absorb nearly all production, and stocks in hands of dealers are at present the lowest they have been in months. February sales of 116,080 cars were made in the face of unfavorable weather conditions in many sections of the country which tied up freight traffic and prevented deliveries. With February the eleventh month in which Ford car sales have gone over the 10,000, the total for this period is close to 1,250,000 cars. STUDEBAKER SALES BREAK ALL RECORDS "Reports reaching the Studebaker factory from all over the country show that retail sales of Studebaker cars for the year to date have beaten all previous records," says Harry D. With February the eleventh month in which Ford car sales have gone over the 10,000, the total for this period is close to 1,250,000 cars. STUDEBAKER SALES BREAK ALL RECORDS "Reports reaching the Studebaker factory from all over the country show that retail sales of Studebaker cars for the year to date, have beaten all previous records," says Harry D. Riley, the Studebaker dealer. "Cars have been purchased by the public as fast as they arrived. They have been ordered for immediate delivery to waiting buyers, rather than take care of the usual spring demand, and as a result there promises to be a serious shortage of Studebaker cars during April, May and June." Several factors have contributed to this record-breaking demand for Studebaker cars. The first undoubtedly is the ever-growing appreciation of the automobile as the indispensable necessity it is in the life of today. Another factor has been the open winter the country over, with the exception of a few sections. Then, too, the increased percentage of closed car production has emphasized the insistent winter demand. "The so-called seasonal demand is a thing of the past. Today we have an all-year demand in the winter as well as the spring, summer and fall—in the last six months of the year as well as the first six months. And the public benefits from this in a way it may not perhaps appreciate. Speaking for Studebaker, for instance, I may say that a steady, consistent demand for our product permits of greater manufacturing economies than a sharply fluctuating demand would, and the public gets the benefit of greater dollar-for-dollar values." WASHINGTON, Mar. 31.-In addition to the $16,000,000,000 which the world owes the United States, America has nearly $5,000,000,000 invested in private commercial and industrial enterprises in foreign countries, according to a compilation today for international news service by Grevenor M. Jones, chief of the financial division of the department of commerce. This situation has a tremendous bearing on the international relationship of the United States, both from an economic and political standpoint. New York vies with London as a great international loan market and change from our position of a debtor nation to that of an international money center came with the war and its financial aftermath. For a time New York did dominate international finance, but England's remarkable financial system has rapidly restored the 'sound sterling' to its pre-war prestige. London will always have a rival in New York. Never will Britain control the United States financially. Against America's $5,000,000-000 invested in other countries, British capital of about $15,000,-000,000 is similarly distributed. The allied debt to Great Britain is approximately $2,000,000,000 lbs. Private citizens of United States have a billion dollars invested in Cuban sugar plantations, railroads, electricity and other business. Other foreign investments include $750,000,000 to $1,500,000,000 in Canada; $1,800,000,000 in Mexico; $250,000,000,000 in Chili; $100,-000,000 in Peru; $150,000,000 in Argentina; $25,000,000 or more in Russia; heavy investment in Great Britain; $75,000,000 in China as well as holdings in Italy, Germany, France, Romania and the Philippines. Great Britain, Jones pointed out, is on the whole, in a better position to finance foreign enterprise than the United States. She has more accumulated capital since industrial development has reached practically the limit of expansion and is not largely needed for domestic purposes. In 1921 the European financial crash found some nations in debt to American business men several billion dollars. Some of this has been paid, the figure now being estimated at $500,000,000 although some aumanagement of the United theater assures the public that the Universal star production of that name which comes it to the local screen tomorrow is a picture that lives up to its titles with starflight ideality. A thinker wrote "The Power of a Lie", John Bojer, Norwegian playwright and novelist, who expressed his thoughts of deceit in the two fields of the stage and the novel and then sold the remarkable story to Universal for picturisation. Charles Kenyon, author of "Kindling" called by the Drama League one of America's greatest plays, prepared the screen scenario. George Archibaud, a gifted French director, guided the filming. CARS SLIGHTLY DAMAGED Dean Ralkes and Walter Cullen both of Anaheim, were mixed up in an accident on Bolas-rd., according to a report to local police.
