LEMON GROWERS TO HAVE FINE SEASON
The second largest crop of lemons in the state's history will be shipped by California this year, according to the April Citrograph.
California will ship the second largest crop of lemons in its entire history during the current season, according to the estimates of lemon shippers returned to the California Fruit Growers Exchange on March 1.
According to this latest estimate California will ship this year 10,878 carloads of lemons of 400 boxes each. With the exception of the season of 1920-21 when the shipments reached a total of 11,805 carloads this season will be the largest in the lemon industry of the state.
The estimated production this season based upon 400 boxes to the car is only 927 cars less than the largest lemon crop the state has ever produced.
The quality of the fruit grown this season is very fine, according to Lemon Sales Agent T. H. Powell, who gives as a reason for this condition the heavy fall rains and mild winter. Storage of fruit as of March 1st was very light, there being only 703 cars on hand as compared with 1008 in 1922, 1633 in 1921, 1743 in 1920 and 1661 in 1919. The March pick is also expected to be light as compared to the last two years. Indications are for a heavy spring business with very satisfactory prices for lemons that can be shipped in April and May.
The average f. o. b. pprice this year have so far exceeded all previous records by a good margin. California lemons have sold at a very good premium over foreign lemons.
“Harikis is within,” comes the word from President Harding and James M. Cox, albeit the Presidential race in 1924. It would be interesting to witness the same two candidates in 1924 as in 1920. But hardly probable.
