PLAY HAS GENUINE EDUCATIONAL VALUE
"Why do we hear so much talk about play now? Because play has been found to have real educational value and to be, when properly conducted, the best training school there is for real citizenship," says Miss Josephine Randall, organizer of recreational activities Community Service.
"Play for grown people is recreation—the renewal of life. For the children it is growth—the gaining of life."
"It is the expression of the different needs of the organism at the different stages in development. And that is why during the age of babyhood up to about three years old, the games are individual and played in the family circle alone. In the dramatic age, from three to six years the circle is enlarged and through the circle and singing games the child is expressing the dramatic and rhythmic instincts which are so strong at this time. He is also learning that he is a part of a larger or group, and is getting his first lessons in citizenship.
"In the Big Injun Age, from six to twelve years, the characteristic instincts are expressed through group games of a very active type. Games of daring, where the child is testing himself and his powers. Team games are most valuable for the age of loyalty, from twelve to sixteen, when the boy or girl learns to co-operate, to-plair fair and square. To do his or her best for the good of the team or group represented. Where loyalty, co-operation, and fair play are the strongest traits developed.
"Activity alone is a failure, character building through activity is a success. If a child has the opportunity for the activity, through the games, which his instincts are demanding there will be little need for juvenile courts. The object of the supervised playgrounds is to offer the opportunity for the natural and normal instincts of childhood to find expression in a constructive way."

BLUNDER CORRECTED
A portable gas store should not have the cook near the stove. Instead the gas should be turned on and off at the head of the lead tube, or where the connection is made. Any rubber tube for conveying gas is dangerous; doubly so if allowed to remain hanging with gas in it. This is what happens when the cock is next to the portable stove or iron.
