UNITED Theatre Anaheim Starting Tomorrow CARL LAEMMLE presents EDWARD (Hoot) GIBSON SUPPORTED by LOUISE LORRAINE and CARMEN PHILLIPS "THE GENTLEMAN From AMERICA" A Whirlwind in Action but with a girl! A Whirlwind in Action but with a girl!! That was a different matter— It's the Best Picture "Hoot" Ever Made— WITH PRICES NOW 10c - 25c - 35c "BETTER PICTURES FOR LESS MONEY" TONIGHT "NOTORIETY" A Picture That Caused a Sensation at Grauman's Leatrice Joy Wears Superb Chinese Gems Leatrice Joy, who plays the role of a high cast Chinese woman in Geo. Melford's Paramount production of "Java Head," now showing at the California Theatre, had a goodly share of responsibility imposed upon her during the screening of the picture. There are no fewer than 29 distinct articles of jewelry and costume accessories of which Miss Joy must keep accurate account and make correct use. Among them are included large and small pencocks, jade grape pins, mottled stone ornaments, ivory harpies, ivory and silver dope pipes, small brass nail-heads, jade and pearl earrings, double strand of green glass beads, moonstone ornaments and various other pretties. Being an American girl Leatrice Joy naturally contrasts this varied collection of gems with the usual meagre assortment which is owned by American women of the same station as Taou Yen, the Chinese character which she portrays. "After naming such pieces as a rope of pearls, several rings, a diamond-suited wrist watch, a pair of jade earrings and perhaps a bar pin and gold cigarette case, the Average American woman is wont to consider her jewel case well stocked," says Plain Dealer Want Ads Get Results Start Construction of Flat Building Construction has been started by Joe Siegel of the Pacific Wrecking & Salvage Co., of a four-flat apartment-bldg in the Mills Park tract. This is the first unit of a $250,000 building program planned by Mr. Siegel. It will be followed by five brick stores, a 100-foot front garage with modern windows, up-to-date bungalow-et on No. Los Angeles-st and several bungalows and houses of various classes as conditions permit. GREAT BRITAIN WILL PAY FULL INTEREST WASHINGTON, Mar. 20.—Great Britain will pay in full the interest and principal for the first year of her war debt in the United States and not exercise an option given her under the 60-year debt settlement term, it was announced today. Under the option Britain can, during the first five years of her payment, pay half the interest and add the remainder to the principal. Miss Joy, "whereas a Chinese woman of similar social position would regard such a collection as merely a slim start toward the necessary number of ornaments." The So. Having completed the Double A league schedule the champion Anaheim Merchants baseball team will appear next Sunday under their old name of Anaheim Elks with Pete Hax, veteran baseball director of Fullerton, at the helm. The Elks state baseball league opens a month earlier this year, the first league game being played the last of May. This gives Manager Hax only two months in which to plug up two and possibly three very important holes in the local lineup. McDowell, crack third baseman, of Anaheim and leading batter of the Winter league, left yesterday to join Wichita of the Western league. Vie Ruedy, star outfielder will be in the lineup for a week or two before leaving for his berth with Danville, Ill., in the Three-Eye league. It is not yet certain whether Doty Bush will be available for second, depending upon his disposition by the Los Angeles club. If he is retained or farmed out by the Angels he will, of course, leave a serious difficulty for Manager Hax. If he is given an outright release by the Seraphs he may be expected back at his old stamping grounds. Hax will probably bring Ray Bash in from the field to McDowells place at third. The first practice game for the Elks will be played next Sunday with Irvine, champions of the Orange county Harbor league. Two weeks ago Irvine held the Los Angeles rookie team to a 5 to 4 score. The game will be played at Irvine. Billy Knott, who lead the Anaheimers to a championship in the Elks State League last summer and again to first honors in the Double A, desired a vacation. He will probably return to the game next fall for another fast Winter League season. Annaheim Elks at their last meeting named Hax, Captain Buster Callan and Knott as the temporary baseball committee. DEMPSEY SPARRING ANAHEIM ROTARY FEELING CHESTY; ISSUES CHALLENGES Fullerton Rotary will be challenged to a golf match with Anaheim Rotary at the Hacienda Country club, the local organization decided at its meeting yesterday afternoon at the Elks clubhouse. The local Kiwanis club will be challenged to an athletic meet at the Elks' Clubhouse next Saturday in connection with Community Night of Community Service. It was the 25th consecutive 100 per cent meeting, and the club Secretary, Rev. Thomas H. Walker, will communicate with international head quarters to see how the club stands in this and other countries in point of attendance. It is believed Anaheim holds the record in the second district. The club hopes to turn out 100 per cent strong, for at least one session of the district convention, to be held at the Hotel Maryland, Pasadena, April 5-6-7. Huntington Beach is trying to form a club President Harry D. Riley said. Riley spoke there on last Friday. Rev. Walter Thornton, pastor of the First Christian church of Fullerton, gave an inspiring talk on economics and service. He said Rotary was the first club to put the Golden Rule into action, and emphasized the force which Rotary and clubs with similar principles could exert toward more unselfishness in business life. Europe wondered at Americans coming over in such numbers, he said, to the international convention in Edinburgh, Scotland, purely for unselfish ends. It would be wonderful if nations could do likewise, he remarked. When President Wilson declared at the beginning of the war that America had come in not for money or territory but for humanity's sake he gave an extraordinary statement of Rotarism said the pastor. The business methods committee at the next meeting will help put on the program. Ten directors will be nominated, of whom five will be elected at the last meeting in April. From curtain raiser to the main go which brings together, Young Leo, Long Beach boy, and Jack Williams of Los Angeles, every member looks good. Just how long the big boys will travel is not certain for it is apt to end with one punch as in the main go of last week when Leo, rocked Otto to sleep in the first round. A large crowd of Long Beach admirers of Leo is coming. Williams on the other hand, has Champion Dempsey's O. K. as a hard and game mixer and Jack ought to know for Williams, has been one of his sparring partners the past few weeks. Little Kid Louie, the pride of Pla-centia, has undertaken a big contract when he tackles that tough buty from Oklahoma, Paul Wilkins in the semi-windup. Jimmy Douglas, Phoenix light-weight, will once again endeavor to show the fans from around these parts that he is better man than Battling Doty who halls from Wintersburg. Mayor Sims, the big gun of that village, is Doty's chief backer. Young Sheller, scrapy welter of over Berdeo way, hooks up with another scrapy one in 'Onlie' Brownie of Orange. Eddie Benson of El Modena tangles with Pete Brown of local fame at 130 pounds while Pete West and Young Kid McCoy raise the curtain at 105 pounds. ELKS PIN LEAGUE OPENS APRIL 6TH Roehm-Sylvestera found the seat rather, rough at Redondo Beach last night and lost all three games to the Duffy-Har-It team of that town. Theodore was high man of the Anaheim team with 546 While Efker was the only man to shoot a 200 score. The So. Calif. Elks League will start April 6 with 12 teams all in one division. Anselm Lodge has a place in the league. H. J. Efker will probably captain the locals. The "Little Giant" is going good and will select a strong team to represent Anaheim. Election of officers of the Brea chamber was postponed one month on account of several new matters which came up at the meeting. A graded fee for business licenses to the advantage of the smaller dealer, was proposed. A report by the ornamental street lighting system committee was presented. For $15,000 ornamental lights may be installed along eight principal blocks of Brea. The matter will be placed before the city. A proposition to increase the number of directors of the chamber from five to 11 was accepted. It was decided to omit the regular monthly dinners but decided to serve at longer intervals. 919 N.
