DAIRIES MAKE FINE RECORD With the completion of the February records of the Cowtesting Ass'n a new association year commences. The directors of the Dairy department urge all dairymen to take advantage of this work so that it can't be said that the Orange-co dairymen are not a progressive, wide-awake bunch. These receiving yearly records on their cows this past year have established an enviable record for themselves, something that all Orange-co can well be proud of, and it is by the establishing of such records that Orange-co will become famous for her dairy cows, and soon buyers will be looking to her for their foundation stock. The rules and regulations for cow-testing as established by the directors are so rigid that anyone purchasing a cow with a Dairy department cow-testing record are sure as to the integrity of it. These records are not obtained under any stimulus of cow competition or abnormal conditions. They are obtained under average dairy conditions so that one purchasing an individual with these records is reasonably sure of obtaining the same under average dairy conditions. Recently Professor W. M. Regan of the University Farm, Davis, and before that a breeder of considerable note in New Jersey, paid the county a visit. When explained the conditions under which cow-testing records were obtained in this county, he said that he would rather buy a cow here than where there was individual competition. That is one of the reasons why individual herd records are never published, excepting those at the top and they deserve a pat on their back, so that the real value of cow-testing will not be lost sight of and a little FILM ACTOR FACES IN BOOTLEG CASE LOS ANGELES, March 16.—Jack Pendock, motion picture star, and two beautiful young women were today reported to have been summoned to the offices of Prohibition Agent In Charge H., H. Dolley for questioning in connection with the arrest of two alleged bootleggers near the Pickford home several days ago. No explanation was made to the persons summoned by Dolley, it was said. They were expected to be questioned closely regarding the activities of alleged bootleggers. REFORESTATION OF CALIFORNIA REDWOOD SAN FRANCISCO, March 16.—In order that California redwood may be available for the generations to come the California Redwood association has announced a program of reforestation designed to reforest the thousands of acres of redwood forest land laid bare by the lumberman's axe. Over 2,000,000 young redwood trees are being grown in the nurseries of Humboldt and Mendocino counties. These will be reset in the deforested areas between Monterey county and the Oregon line. $15,000 LOOT TAKEN Recently Professor W. M. Began of the University Farm, Davis, and before that a breeder of considerable note in New Jersey, paid the county a visit. When explained the conditions under which cowtesting records were obtained in this county, he said that he would rather buy a cow here than where there was individual competition. That is one of the reasons why individual herd records are never published, excepting those at the top and they deserve a pat on their back so that the real value of cowtesting will not be lost sight of and a little self-glory the predominating factor. It is the object of the director of the Dairy department to carry on this work to the greatest ultimate benefit to all participating. The charge of $2.50 per cow per year with $1.00 down with the first test and 50 cents each quarter is small compared with the value of a complete year's record of the individual. By these records one knows which are the high producing cows and can feed accordingly, thus feeding where it will return the most net profit and culling out the "pets" as far as production and profit is concerned. Dairying is a business and we can see every day dairymen goling broke because they refuse to regard it as such, refusing to apply the soundest of business principles to their work—that of keeping records. The day is past when one can get ahead in a haphazard fashion. February report of the Cowtesting Ass'n: Number of cows tested for the month, 826; average pounds of milk per cow, 779; average pounds of fat per cow, 53.5; number of cows producing 40 pounds fat or more per month 201; number of cows producing 50 pounds fat or more per month 85.
